I've never heard anyone say that it causes any issues and supposedly it moves traffic on and off the interstate more efficiently.

the lanes are well marked and the signs, traffic lights etc control it all pretty well.
Also a higher volume of traffic helps because unless you are in front of the line, you are mostly following the car in front of you.
But with SCDOT in charge I suspect they will cut corners on the lights and signage and striping and it probably won't go as well.

But how many drivers in SC will not comprehend the lane shift and go out if their way ti turn back into oncoming traffic.

Very popular in NC. Typically the local PD or DOT have lead cars for first few days, especially during commuter/rush hour.
