How is DC Goodwin doing in yr 2 vs Venables?

I don’t feel he’s as good especially on his blitz packages nor his enthusiasm of course which Venables trade-marked and it rubbed off onto his entire D and entire team.

I think - not bad. Just different.
Venables applied more pressure - thus more sacks, etc - but also - more big plays.
Goodwin is more balanced and more suited for todays offenses. He is still growing.
But, like all coaches, they coach, players play.

Wes Goodwin's defense at Clemson is MUCH better than Venebles defense at Oklahoma. That's for sure.

Please re read your post and tell me what is impressive about either one of those teams you mentioned? We will find out a lot more in 2 weeks against FSU. Give the man a chance. After all it wasn't defense that lost to Duke. Defense is the only reason we were in that game and everyone is calling for Goodwin to be fired. We scored 7 points. You aren't winning many games at all if you are relying on your defense to pitch a shutout every week.

I agree 100%. Wes seems very nice but does not seem to get the players yo play with the same intensity that BV did. BV having to be pulled back from the field and fire shooting out his eyes created more intensity from the players. We have not been very good at getting to the QB like we did when Brent was here.

Coach V also had the advantage of an offense lead by DW4 and TL16.
A - you have a lead and you can take more chances.
B - you take a chance and give up the lead you know they'll bring you back.
Last season, we couldn't afford to take chances with our offense.
Lets see how this season plays out.

2014 when Watson was hurt, and a good portion of 2017 with K Bryant. Not to mention during some really shaky offensive performances even when we had those great QBs. I also just remember a lot of games where our offense game out of the gate slow and Brent's D gave them the time to get act together. A lot of offenses don't get that luxury.

The very nature of defense is aggression and we are playing too much read and react. We need more corner blitzes and I don't think Wes relates well to his players- too passive. He has GOT to improve or a very long year.

How many Defensive meetings have you been to?
How many times have you been in the locker room?
Until you say yes to 1 or more, you have no clue.

Were currently 8th in total defense. Our issue last year was a banged up, youthful secondary.

Wes’ first year we were 28th overall. 76th in pass defense but 13th in rush defense.
This year we’re 8th overall. We’re 51st in rushing (think Duke QB) and 9th is passing

I would say he meets the OK spectrum but not good or great. I am concerned with him coaching our LBs with zero experience as a position coach or player. With Eason and Reed on the D staff, the great player talent we have, if Wes wasn't doing at least OK would be a miracle.
I would like to see a little more aggressive play calling. If our DL and LBs are NFL talent as said, then we should be able to be more of a shutdown defense.
Definitely concerned after seeing Riley run on us like he did as Travis is even better runner. Could be long night if we can't pin down Travis next week.

Against Duke they let the running back come out of the backfield multiple times with nobody even close to him WTH. Once can be a fluke but to get hit multiple times is bad coaching. The talent is there but the coaching is not, just my opinion.

In 2012 Clemson was 46th in total defense and 24.8 ppg.
The 2022 Tigers were 22nd and 20.9 ppg.
Goodwin did have the benefit of BVs recruiting classes.
