Judge

Jan 3, 2022, 8:45 PM

Second post, don’t pretend to be a tigernet expert. A man has to start somewhere. Dabo did not see this coming with Todd, somewhere along the lines Judge, you have to realize how good Dabo was to him and his opportunity. Brent Venables is Clemson good no doubt, but to say Todd is improving himself by moving laterally to OK is foolish. The saying it’s just business has hurt me a many of times over the years, and let’s face it, all business is personal when these types of “business” decisions are made. Go Tigers!

How is being named Co-DC a lateral move?

Jan 3, 2022, 8:51 PM

Roof is in his mid 60's. He'll retire and Bates will be DC. Wes could be here 10 years.

His upward mobility here was done

Roof is 57/58. He graduated Ga. Tech in 1986.

You're right. Guy has been a DC 25 years

assumed he was older. Just googled his resume, you want to talk about a vagabond coaching journey. DC at UMass, GT(twice), Duke, Auburn, UCF, Penn St, App St and Vandy and 6-45 as HC at Duke

Striperfan always makes good sense.

I too would be entertained by an answer to this.***

I'm honored that you've chosen to use your first two posts

here to argue with me.

You seem to have your mind made up about this situation. You've decided that Dabo was a wonderful and caring boss, loyal to Todd Bates, and Todd was disloyal for leaving for what you perceive an equivalent job at Oklahoma.

Dabo has repeatedly said that he supports his assistant coaches moving on to better situations for themselves and their families. Bates has been very loyal to Clemson, and was passed over for both of the co-DC positions by two others on our staff who are arguably less deserving. Dabo made that decision because he felt that it was best for the program.

Talented employees who want to advance in their careers shouldn't be expected to remain in a job where advancement seems to be impossible. If Todd wants to be a defensive coordinator one day, do you honestly see that as a possibility at Clemson anytime in the near future? Because I don't.

Meanwhile, the defensive coordinator he has been working under and learning from for a long time, who is now a head coach, offered him a co-DC position. That is a promotion in title, and is likely a salary promotion as well. It is not a lateral move.

Some of you seem to have lost perspective here. I believe that Bates loves Clemson and is very appreciative for his opportunity at Clemson, but saw the reality of his situation at Clemson and saw no avenue for advancement. He was presented with what most objective people would consider a better job, and he took it. Good for him!

Of course business decisions are personal in that they affect people's employment status, but you can't expect Bates to stay at Clemson out of "loyalty" or "friendship" while putting his own career goals (and likely family goals as well) on the backburner.

I stand by my statement: it's nothing personal, just business.

Judge not real sure on how much we do agree on lol but I am in full agreement on this. I didn’t see him advancing anytime soon after the CO-DC’s were named. Wish him well!
