think the transfer portal is bad now

Jun 21, 2021, 11:48 AM

just wait till the pay starts going out..folks leaving a school like clemson to go to a place like southern cal where more cash is to be made via opportunities in that market

If NCAAF going the pro route, teams should have ownership

Jun 21, 2021, 12:06 PM

Players must sign a 4-5 year contract, and only released if the teams allow it. If going the pro route for modeling sports, then all aspects of it should be implemented.

agree..im afraid its going to

Jun 21, 2021, 12:11 PM

create a have nots like place like southern cal..and a place like clemson in a smaller market will suffer from it...way more opportunities money making wise out there than here..and those big time recruits many of them will factor that in to where they go

I agree. The transfer portal will be crazy. A kid goes to a team like Wake or wherever and does amazing and then decides to transfer to Southern Cal to market themselves better and make some cash.

Including a players union?***

I agree. The big football programs are going to create rules and the players will have some type of organization that agrees with them. It will take a while to shake out but ultimately will have structure.

Re: think the transfer portal is bad now

Jun 21, 2021, 12:09 PM

Very true. Southern Cal will be the powerhouse school of the country in the future in theory. UCLA may even have a chance now. Maybe Miami? Small market schools might have problems.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think this is a common misconception

Jun 21, 2021, 12:14 PM

Why would USC, UCLA and Miami suddenly start paying players more just because of the cities they are in? Clemson, SEC schools and some big ten will still have more fan support and the areas are still more into college football.

LA won’t suddenly become a college football hot bed because players can make money

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

its more about opportunity

Jun 21, 2021, 12:18 PM

way more opportunities to make cash via other avenues out there...if you thinking a place like clemson can thrive in that environment you are fooling yourself.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson might be able to compete, since The Tigers are

Jun 21, 2021, 12:22 PM

already on top. (TL would have made major bucks because of the exposure he got as the QB of a top college team.)

But if we ever slip from the top - we'll never come back...

Re: its more about opportunity

Jun 22, 2021, 3:59 PM [ in reply to its more about opportunity ]

Except football is their multi-million dollar ticket and in terms of exposure, branding, etc., we have a distinct advantage, as do the rest of the schools in the southeast (plus Texas). Basic supply and demand.

This is football, not the film industry.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The schools aren't paying the money. These kids will be able

Jun 21, 2021, 12:20 PM [ in reply to I think this is a common misconception ]

to make more money in larger advertising markets. Conversely (as you implied) - why would an LA advertiser use USC College Kid - when they can use whoever the Rams QB is...?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly, it seems like the solution is to allow

Jun 21, 2021, 12:22 PM

kids to leave for the NFL after 1 season. I wouldn't have wanted this with the old system, but I think the scales have finally turned in such a way that it makes the most sense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the NFL's rule - it's there to protect themselves,

Jun 21, 2021, 12:25 PM

not the kids. They are protecting themselves from someone being tempted to draft a TL after his freshman year - and then having to pay him while he develops...

Let them go to the NFL whenever. Why 1 year? The NFL rule is a major root of all these problems.

Colleges are educational institutions and have no business paying players. Back to club teams - no scholarships or other benefits. Let the NFL pay these players.

Yep..
And Southern Cal will continue to underachieve like they have been since about 2010...

Re: think the transfer portal is bad now

Jun 21, 2021, 1:04 PM

The big name college players can make money at any school but if the rest of the players around them are underpaid there will be problems. We recruit good olineman and we have very few areas to market him but S cal can use buses, taxi's, vending machines, heck even autograph shows in LA will be bigger than anything CU can put together so if you think the big city schools do not have an advantage or the bigger States then you are wrong and just wait and see what happens.

Re: think the transfer portal is bad now

Jun 22, 2021, 12:03 PM

Location doesn’t hold the same selling point as it would have 10 years ago. The bulk of the money is estimated to be derived from social media platforms (as an influencer). Another significant revenue stream will be from merchandising. In this circumstance, a player receives a lump sum and perhaps a percentage of sales. Location doesn’t matter in this income stream either since it will be internet based (or managed by a company).

Re: think the transfer portal is bad now

Jun 21, 2021, 12:41 PM

I suspect Southern Cal is already using this strategy to attract kids. Has anyone looked at 247 at the commitments they have gotten in the last few weeks and the projections coming their way? They have always recruited well due to location but Clay Helton has never been Pete Carrol. Now, all of sudden Helton has turned into John Robinson? No coincidence.

this. Its insane to see a number of Clemson "fans" cheer this on.

which also means the end of the for Clemson as a top program.

"at least they are finally getting paid."

"I love this place, I've got a spot already picked out where I want 'em to put me when I die - up there on that ole hill near the stadium. I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays; then I won't have to go Heaven; I'll already be there."- Frank Howard

the tug abides

Re: think the transfer portal is bad now

Jun 21, 2021, 2:30 PM

if all players are getting the same amount, then a small town like Clemson would be more desirable due to the massive difference in cost of living.

If someone goes to UCLA, it because they like the lifestyle, or they are more interested the education.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The transfer portal was also a rights issue

Jun 21, 2021, 2:46 PM

It's funny, but it wasn't that long ago that coaches could leave whenever they want and players couldn't (whether or not I think they SHOULD honor their commitment).

The transfer portal fixed that basic rights issue (albeit not completely at first).

Now players will have more rights, and you're right, likely more than ever will exercise those rights.

Hopefully Clemson can continue to show that they can compete financially with the biggest schools & markets (I have a hard time believing Texas & Stanford will become unstoppable programs thanks to money alone).
