Worst NC in the modern Era

This question was asked on FB so I thought I’d bring it here. I say 15 years is considered modern era but I’m sure that differs depending on who you ask. But for argument sake let’s say the past 15 years.
IMHO Michigan is my number 1. Followed by 2024 OSU.
What say you?

I always think of the 'modern era' as being when the size of the football changed. Not sure when that was, late fifties or early sixties.

Man that’s way too long in my opinion.
Heck in 2012-13 offenses started to morph and even Bama decided to hop on the wagon in 2018. Before that is was defense won championship. Can’t say that now days

I would say that BYU is the worst in the modern era beating no one including a 6 and 6 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl to "secure" its championship... followed by Colorado's half of a title in 1990. The only reason they got that was because they received 5 downs instead of 4 vs Missouri. The extra down was the last play of the game, and the play scored for the game winner. Without the 5th down it is a loss and no consideration for the championship due to its weak schedule... My 2 cents.

Also add, I haven’t been impressed with the past 4 NC since 2020 bama outside of 2022 UGA.

I think NCs in general are going to be less dominant going forward as the talent becomes more disbursed among more teams. The days of Alabama, Georgia, or even us having future studs sitting on the bench biding their time are probably over. Now those guys are going elsewhere and leveling the playing field to some degree. Makes for more competitive teams but reduces the quality of the elite teams at the top.

I totally agree that post Covid is going to be a different era. Transfer portal and NIL have changed everything unless they find a way to get things back to where it was. But I say you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Right at the edge of the timeline. Auburn with Cam Newton. Lots of luck and as a team not that good. Also pretty unlikeable with the scandals that surrounded them.

College football literally changes almost every 15 years. You can’t say 90s football is anything like it is today. You can’t say 80s football was anything like the 90s. So on and so forth.
So you almost have to break it down every 15 years or so.
Will look back in 10 years and say post Covid a lot changed so will be talking about who’s been the best since 2020.

I agree totally. 2024 Buckeyes were the worst NC in the modern era. They lost to 8-5 Michigan by 3! They lost to eventual #3 AP Oregon by 1 on the road!! Losers.
They ended up going 14-2. They beat 6 of the final AP top 10. Including final AP #2. AP #3. AP #4. AP #5. AP #9. And AP#10.
The losses suck. But it would be pretty hard to find a team that beat that many great teams in a season.

I actually don’t look at any of those teams as being that great because I see 2024 season has being one of the worst in years. I didn’t see a single dominant team across the board. A bunch of average teams if you ask me.
So the way I look at it is can they beat a 2019 LSU team? No. Could they beat a 2020 Alabama team? No. Could there be 2018 Clemson? Heck no.
I’d argue they wouldn’t even beat 2020 or 2019 Ohio State. Those were really really good. Ohio State teams that just ran into elite teams. I saw no elite teams this year or the previous year.

So, you are judging the 2024 Buckeyes based on your subjectivity. There is no way to objectively teams across the last 25 years. Heck, it’s hard to rank teams from year to year. Or even game to game. You said 2024 Ohio State is the worst NC because they couldn’t beat 3 of the “best” NCs. Again very subjective. So the only thing you have said is they aren’t as elite as those teams. That has done nothing to show 2024 Ohio State isn’t the worst NC of the modern era. I can say, without subjectivity, that Ohio State beat 6 AP final top ten teams. Can any other team say that? Not even close. I am not saying 2024 Ohio State is the best NC. I am saying that they definitely aren’t the worst.
