Hopefully he shows and coaches with more fire. Teams typically take on the the attitude and emotion from their coach. Venables was at one end of the spectrum, he can’t be a church mouse on the other end. Hurry football !!!

He was an assistant in the NFL for 3 years and has been on our defensive staff for a combined 7 years before his promotion. I'd say he's been "at this level" plenty of time.

We haven't seen enough yet to say he was a good choice. Last year was average at best but also with a lot of challenges. If he is a good choice then this should be a bounce-back year. If it isn't, then we have things to consider.

Seems to me that all of the post season changes on the offensive side of things kind of took the focus off the defense,
A top 30 or so defense with the talent we had was kind of discouraging.
Hope he learned a lot and we see that old defense that had a nasty edge to it

Funny, The defense last year was talented but youth and injuries played a huge role in the defensive rankings last year. The secondary was a mash unit with several players missing games while several others played the season injured. The front line lacked continuity as well due to injuries and of course the untimely tragedy for Bresee. Youth and depth have plagued Clemson and then throw in the Coordinator changes and the season results of 11 wins and an ACC Championship is actually a bigger accomplishment than fans can see. Now in 2023 another coordinator change and a plethora of preseason injuries and surgeries have struck this team again. Yet this team is a threat to win the National Championship again. Health, health, health and more health is the key to seeing this team return to former success. 2021/2022 was Clemson with injuries, yet they are top 5 in the country at 21-6. If this team can get healthy and stay healthy for a whole season watch the results!

I could not agree more. However, I wished that Bresee would have stuck around at least one more season. I believe he could improve his draft stock to a guaranteed 1st round pick. Whatever the situation, we very much need a NASTY front 7 this season with plenty of athleticism in the back 4. We will win the Natty two years consecutively if we can manage that. With the addition of Woods upfront we should see some action from the Defensive Ends this season because Offensive Lines will have to double team Woods.

Another year of Bresee would have been super, but I’m glad that he made the right choice for him to try for the NFL.
He’ll be a Day 1 pick, which is plenty good enough for him to get off to a great financial start.
We were fortunate to have him with us; of course it was awful luck that injuries, illness, and personal tragedy intervened over past 2 years.

He's not a spaz, get over it and yourself. A spaz brings nothing but fear to the defenders and lack of trust.
For some guys, getting the play in on time is way more relevant and helpful than a guy jumping around all over the place. I want a leader that's cool and calculated and feels comfortable enough to be calm and gets the defensive calls in on time so that I as a player would have time to think and line up my guys. That last minute crap got tiresome when losing and giving up big plays to a totally average Ohio State team.

Agree 100%. There was going to be a dropoff to some degree. We also had a ton of injuries and an offense that couldn't wait to hand the ball back to the other team. I felt many times last year that our defense was a lot like an ace pitcher on a bad team. Our previous defenses had offenses that could sustain drives and get points. He's got experience at the NFL and college level and it's gonna take a little time for him to show what he's got. As far as folks wanting him to be fired up, maybe that's just not his personality. Good thing we don't have Belichick coaching our defense because he doesn't spend half the game yelling at everyone.

In agreement again, Western. Venables outsmarted himself with last-second adjustments that toooften left us flat footed.
Godwin’s approach is less frenetic and a good change for us.
With a year as a battlefield general under his belt, we’ll see the Jack Keane in Goodwin this year. He always had the brains and football knowledge. Now he has his battlefield experience.

I presume that most are expecting Coach Wes Goodwin to be raucous and fired up like Coach Venables was on the sideline. I disagree with that notion because not everyone is the same and one coaching style isn't superior to another with respects to animated or nonanimated personalities.
Look at it this way, whenever Coach Venables was on the sideline he was the fired-up personality that the players fed on each week. However, most of the position and strength coaches were the reserved quiet types. In fact, their focus was keeping Coach Venables on the sideline for the most part.
However, reverse the roles a bit. Coach Wes Goodwin is a brain in the game of football which is why he's so highly sought after by many programs to include NFL teams. What if the position and strength coaches were the ones rallying the troops (so to speak) while Coach Goodwin focused all of his energy and efforts on outsmarting the opposing team's offense? If you asked me, the energy would be there, but more tactical and strategic focus would be in effect as well.
Comparing Coach Goodwin to Coach Venables aside of results is like comparing a Shark and a Gorilla in a tree climbing competition. The Shark has a different skill set and is very good at swimming and hunting, but we all know that the Shark cannot climb trees. Another way stated, Coach Wes Goodwin will have to create a defensive culture that allows for him to capitalize on his strengths as a coach instead of being that Shark trying to climb a tree.

When DBs play man coverage all the time, we get destroyed by any opposing QB with decent running ability.
West Virginia scored 10 touchdowns against us in the Orange Bowl (after 2011 season) because our DBs played man coverage the entire game. Every time that the WV QB did not get tackled at LOS or for a loss during broken plays, he’d run 25+ yards downfield. Any sacks or TFLs from previous downs were negated.

N.Dame
N.Carolina
All of the above have QBs who know how to run and when to run.
Unless we’re planning to lose to each of these teams, we’d better play a lot of zone for our DBs.
