97 - Doug Cline Gained 97 Receiving Yards at Clemson

Few players could excel on offense, defense, and special teams in college football! Clemson had such a star player in the late 1950s.
Charles Douglas “Doug” Cline (1957-1959) seemingly did it all for Clemson. FB Doug Cline is referenced the most, so fullback appears to have been his most prominent position. But LB Doug Cline also played a lot of snaps. As did P Doug Cline. Hard to imagine a player like that today!
At Clemson:
Sports-Reference.com only seems to provide his offensive statistics. Accordingly, Cline registered the following rushing/receiving statistics:
Doug Cline (1957-1959):
- 245 Carries for 1,082 Yards (4.4 Average)
- 9 Rushing Touchdowns
- 10 Receptions for 97 Yards (9.7 Average)
- 1 Receiving Touchdown

Several sources discuss Cline’s impressive play at other positions as well. Note this November 1958 article from the Tiger. Doug Cline is mentioned both for his offense and for his defense (see upper right corner of the article beneath the word “Saturday” in the headline):

Other sources note Cline’s play on multiple sides of the ball as well. AllStateSugarBowl.org, for example, describes Cline’s play in Clemson’s 1958-1959 Sugar Bowl appearance against #1 LSU:
“Rabb continued to pilot the drive, completing a 24-yard pass to end Mickey Mangham and guiding the Tigers to the 1. J. W. Brodnax crashed into the end zone but fumbled. Doug Cline recovered for the Clemson touchback. “I thought it was over,” Brodnax said with insistence afterward.

Tommy Davis boomed a 52-yard punt, and when Clemson failed to move again, it appeared the two sets of Tigers were settling down into trench warfare. A reserve center, Paul Snyder, was in during this series. As it happened, when Clemson tried to punt, Synder’s snap went awry and bounced off the leg of kicker Doug Cline. LSU tackle Duane Leopard fell on the loose ball at the Clemson 11.”

The next season, Cline scored an important touchdown in Clemson’s first ever victory in Kennan Stadium. According to ClemsonWiki:
“1959: Eighteenth-ranked Clemson travels to twelfth-ranked North Carolina, winning, 20-18. A crowd of 43,000 in Kenan Stadium watches as Clemson recovers a Tarheel fumble on the first play of the game, subsequently scoring on a two-yard run by Harvey White. Clemson scores again on a one-yard run by Doug Cline, and White passes to Bill Mathis for a two-point conversion, 14-0.

North Carolina successfully passes its way back to 20-18 on the strength of Tarheel quarterback Jack Cummings' arm, but a two-point attempt is stopped one yard shy of the goal line by Lowndes Shingler and Paul Snyder, and Coach Frank Howard's Tigers secure their first-ever victory in Kenan Stadium. After Clemson:
The NY Giants selected Doug Cline with the 168th Pick (14th Round) of the 1960 NFL Draft. Doug Cline signed, however, to play in the AFL for the Houston Oilers. In 7 seasons (1960-1966), he played in 95 games. All but two of those games were with the Houston Oilers. His final two games were with the San Diego Chargers. He predominately played defense (LB) in the AFL, but he did see some time as a fullback. And, yes, he also played a little on the special teams as a kick returner.
According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, he registered the following AFL statistics:
LB/FB Doug Cline (1960-1966):
- 7 Interceptions Returned for 77 Yards (11.0 Average)
- 37 Carries for 105 Yards (2.84 Average)
- 2 Rushing Touchdowns
- 4 Receptions for 15 Yards
- 4 Kick Returns for 66 Yards (16.5 Average)

I just felt a little Scottish this mawnin, just for a minute there. No kilts or bagpipes in my future, though! Although, one of my biggest embarrassments many years ago, was walking along Folly Beach, and a 40 something year old lady told me, and I quote "You have nice looking legs, for a man." I wanted to sink into the sand.
