95 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 8-2 in 1930

Sadly, the final season of the Josh Cody era. I guess it’s true: All good things come to an end!

“The 1930 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team Clemson College—now known as Clemson University—as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) during the 1930 college football season. In their fourth and final season under head coach Josh Cody, the Tigers compiled an 8–2 record (3–2 against conference opponents), finished ninth in the conference, and outscored opponents by a total of 239 to 82.”

According to Wikipedia:

Right halfback Johnnie Justus was the team captain. Four Clemson players were selected as first-team players on the 1930 All-Southern Conference football team: center Red Fordham; guard Mule Yarborough; and quarterback Maxcy Welch and left halfback Grady Salley.

“Oct. 17, 1930 – Maxcey Welch scored five touchdowns (all rushing) in Clemson’s 75-0 win over Newberry. Welch and Stumpy Banks are the co-holders of that Clemson touchdown scoring record.”

Also according to ClemsonTigers.com, Cody’s decision to accept another coaching job was a difficult one:

“March 13, 1930 – Josh Cody signed a new contract to stay at Clemson through the 1932 season.
Nov. 26, 1930 – Josh Cody announced that the Furman game the next day will be his final as head coach.

Nov. 27, 1930 – Clemson defeated Furman 12-7 at Furman to conclude the Tigers third straight eight-win season, the only eight-win seasons in Clemson history between 1896 and 1938. The 1930 Tigers concluded the season with an 8-2 record and posted four shutouts. In fact, only Tennessee and Florida scored over a touchdown against the Tigers in this season.

Nov. 29, 1930 – The Tiger student newspaper published an extra edition about Coach Cody, hoping to convince him to remain as coach. Cody had become a popular mentor because of his 29-11-1 record, including a perfect 4-0 record against South Carolina, the only coach in Clemson history to have a perfect ledger against the Gamecocks (miniumum four games).

Jan. 2, 1931 – After reconsidering his decision for over a month, Cody made his resignation final. He went on to be a football coach and men’s basketball coach at Temple.”

These guys were tough as nails – like their coach! Interesting to note that they are still using leather helmets in 1930!

Ho-hum. Another season with Coach Josh Cody – another win over the Chickens. Cody moved to 4-0 vs. the Gamechickens. The Chickens never beat Clemson with Head Coach Josh Cody!

Being undefeated, perhaps Coach Josh Cody is the Original “Coot Killa!”

Beating the Gamechickens improved Clemson’s record to 19-8-1 against the poultry.

A big “Thank You” to Coach Cody:

During Coach Josh Cody’s time:
- The only coach of at least two season to be undefeated vs the Gamechickens: 4-0
- 13-0-1 Home Record
- 72% winning percentage overall (4th best in Clemson history)
- Coached Clemson’s first All-America football player, center O.K. Pressley
- Coached Clemson basketball for five year – including a record for wins in 1930 (16-9)
- From 1928-1930 coached Clemson basketball to a 22-4 home record
