92 - Detroit Lions Select Jonathan Brooks with Pick 92 in 1979 NFL Draft

Jonathan Brooks was a standout LB/DL for Clemson. Given the star that he was, he really should have gotten more media coverage. Here’s what I could find for this star Clemson player from the late 1970s.

From Brooks’ hometown newspaper, the Saluda Standard-Sentinel in November 1976:

The Green Bay Press-Gazette quoted Brooks after Ohio St HC Woody Hayes punched Brooks’ teammate Charlie Baughman in the 1978 Gator Bowl:

“Hayes slugged Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman, according to most eyewitness accounts. Bauman had intercepted a pass with about two minutes left that aborted an Ohio State drive at the Clemson 24. "Hayes, it looked like, took a swing at him," said Bauman's teammate Jonathan Brooks.

"I didn't see whether he hit him, but a lot of players said he did."

The 1978 Clemson Gator Bowl Media Guide devoted space to several key Clemson players. Jonathan Brooks’ page stated that Brooks was:

“A two-time all-ACC defensive end … one of Clemson’s quickest defensive ends ever”

When Tigernet honored the 1978 team as one of Clemson’s best (the team finished 11-1). TNet noted that “Defensive end Jonathan Brooks led the team in interceptions with 6.”

After Clemson:

The Detroit Lions selected Jonathan Brooks with the 92nd pick (4th Round) in the 1979 NFL Draft. He played for the Lions in 1979. He then played for the Atlanta Falcons and the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980.

From 1983-1985, Brooks played in the USFL. He played for the Philadelphia Stars in 1983 and 1984 and for the Baltimore Stars in 1985.

I would love to find out more about this star former player. Would love for any insights if any TNetters have any.

Sadly, Jonathan Brooks passed away in 2022. The Clemson family lost a good one for sure!

Clemson: Academic Excellence! Athletic Excellence!

South Carolina Highway 92 is a 16.5 mile state highway that runs from the west end at SC 101 in Gray Court to the east end at SC 49 near Cross Anchor, passing through Enoree. ZF Transmission in Gray Court is where the lady worked that won the $billion+ lottery.

Nothing too fascinating in the area above, so I'll look at Edisto Beach and Hunting Island state parks, two CCC built parks across the bay from each other, but 83 miles apart by road. 1,255 acre Edisto Beach State Park has a 1.5 mile beach, 4 miles of ADA accessible trails, 2 oceanfront picnic shelters, 2 campgrounds with 120 sites for RVs or tents, 7 cabins on the salt marsh, and 1 environmental learning center. A nearby Pavilion is not part of the park but is a lot of fun. 5,000 acre Hunting Island State Park has 5 miles of beach, a saltwater lagoon, 102 highly coveted RV camp sites, 25 tent sites, a picnic shelter, a fishing and walking pier, a nature center, and South Carolina's only public access lighthouse with 167 steps. The lighthouse is quite a climb but well worth the view at the top. I've been to both parks many years ago.
