- By the end of the year, the U.S. is brought forcibly into the war.

In their second season under head coach Frank Howard, the Tigers compiled a 7–2 record (5–1 against conference opponents), finished third in the conference, and outscored opponents by a total of 233 to 90.”

Oct. 6, 1941 – Work began on Memorial Stadium. The chore of cleaning, digging and leveling the site as well as cutting large trees and clearing underbrush was supervised by Frank Howard. A pipe was also installed for drainage under the field.

Oct. 11, 1941 – Clemson defeated Boston College at Fenway Park, 26-13. Joe Blalock scored two touchdowns as Clemson overcame a 6-0 deficit after the first quarter. BC outgained Clemson 363-281, but Clemson came away with the victory.

Oct. 23, 1941 – Booty Payne became the first Clemson player to pass for over 200 yards in an 18-14 loss to South Carolina. He completed 9-16 passes for 202 yards in the contest. It was one of just three 200-yard passing games by a Tiger in the decade of the 1940s.

Nov. 15, 1941 – Clemson defeated Wake Forest, 29-0, in the last game at Riggs Field.

Nov. 22, 1941 – The Tigers put on the greatest rushing defense exhibition in the first 100 years of Clemson history, holding Furman to -21 yards rushing in a 34-6 win in Greenville. Charlie Timmons scored three touchdowns and added four extra points in his final game as a Tiger. But Timmons was not the leading rusher in the game, as teammate Sid Tinsley picked up 127 yards on just seven carries.

“Guard Wade Padgett was the team captain. The team's statistical leaders included tailback "Booty" Payne with 582 passing yards and fullback Charlie Timmons with 635 rushing yards and 77 points scored (9 touchdowns and 23 extra points).

Three Clemson players were selected by the Associated Press (AP) or United Press (UP) as first-team players on the 1941 All-Southern Conference football team: Charlie Timmons (AP-1, UP-1); end Joe Blalock (AP-1, UP-1); and tackle George Fritts (AP-1, UP-1).

Clemson was ranked at No. 39 (out of 681 teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score System for 1941.”

Regarding All-Southern Conference FB Charlie Timmons (from Wikipedia):

Charles Truman Timmons (February 8, 1917 – March 27, 1996) was an American professional football fullback in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played college football at the University of Georgia and Clemson College; as a sophomore at the 1940 Cotton Bowl, he rushed for 127 yards and scored the only touchdown in the 6–3 Clemson win.

Timmons was selected in the nineteenth round of the 1942 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins, but instead joined the U.S. Navy. During training, he played for the Georgia Pre-Flight Skycrackers football team.

Joseph Davis Blalock (February 4, 1919 – August 21, 1974) was an American football player. He played college football for the Clemson Tigers football team from 1939 to 1941 and was selected by both the Sporting News and the Central Press Association as a first-team end on the 1941 College Football All-America Team. He was also selected by the United Press as a second-team All-American in 1940.[3] Clemson University claims him as the school's first two-time All-American. He was an inaugural inductee into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1973

Regarding All-Southern Conference Tackle: George Fritts (from Wikipedia)::

George Henry Fritts Jr. (December 30, 1919 – February 7, 1987) was an American football player and coach. A native of Lenoir City, Tennessee, Fritts attended Lenoir City High School before accepting a full scholarship to Clemson University. He played guard for the Clemson team from 1939 to 1942.

Fritts played in Clemson, first bowl game, the 1940 Cotton Bowl Classic. After serving in World War II, he was hired to coach the Columbus, Georgia, football team but a manager in the front office of the Philadelphia Eagles contacted him for completing his requirements for professional football. An earlier exposure to high levels of radiation during World War II left him with a disability which resulted in his loss of eyesight after three years of playing for Philadelphia.

Frank Howard hired him to be an assistant coach at Clemson and after a few years there he left to coach at Gaffney High School and Boiling Springs High School in South Carolina and Appling County High School and Groves High School in Georgia, later becoming a high school principal. In 1977, he was inducted in the Clemson University Hall of Fame. and was recognized as a first-team all-century team at Clemson in 1998.

With the close loss to the Gamechicken, Clemson’s 7 game win streak over the Chickens comes to an end. Clemson’s record vs the Gamechickens now goes to 26-12-1.

- A “Day that will Live in Infamy” (Franklin D. Roosevelt, December 8, 1941)

The U.S. officially joins the Allies and declares war on Japan the next day (December 8). Germany and Italy each declare war on the U.S. tht week (December 11), prompting the U.S. to declare war on each of them as well.

The U.S. has entered WW2! Cannot imagine what went through the minds of the Clemson cadets – or their families – as the U.S. entered the war.
