North Carolina Highway 82 is a 16.0 mile state highway that runs from the south end at US 13 near Cooper to the north end at US 421/ NC 55 in Erwin, goes through Falcon and Godwin, runs parallel to the Cape Fear River, and passes Averasboro Battlefield and Museum.

The Cape Fear River is a 202 mile long blackwater river in east-central North Carolina. It starts where the Deep and Haw rivers merge near the town of Moncure and flows through the North Carolina piedmont and coastal plain and into the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Fear near Southport. The Cape Fear River basin and watershed is home to about one-third of the state's population, making it the most densely populated region of North Carolina. Though the river supports recreation, drinking water supply, and agriculture, it is also the most industrialized river in North Carolina, with power, manufacturing, and wastewater treatment plants, landfills, paper mills, and industrial agriculture. This has caused a lot of pollution with suspended solids and man-made chemicals from industry, cities, and farms along this beautiful river.

82 - Tiger Band has Played Tiger Rag at Clemson Football Games for 82 Seasons

16

Jun 10, 2024, 6:32 AM

Clemson Tiger Rag: The Song that Shakes the Southland!

Tiger Rag – including Clemson fans spelling C-L-E-M-S-O…-N – has become an integral part of Clemson Football. The history of Clemson and Tiger Rag goes back a long way! According to Clemson World:

“According to Clemson historian Jerry Reel, “Tiger Rag” was first recorded in 1917 by the Original Dixieland Jass [sic] Band. The recording didn’t sell well, and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (they had changed the spelling in late 1917), with Dominic James “Nick” La Rocca as the leader, issued a second recording in 1918.

In the fall of 1941, Dean Ross, cadet bandmaster of the Clemson Corps band, went to the athletic director’s office to discuss Clemson’s lack of a fight song. With $100 in his pocket to make it happen, Ross hitchhiked to Atlanta with another cadet to look for music for the band. They purchased the band score of “Tiger Rag” for $1.50 from the Old Southern Music Company and brought it back to Clemson.”

Nick Peck, who began his 29-year stint as Tiger Band announcer in the 1960s, coined the introduction that has been enjoyed by fans ever since: “And now, the song that shakes the Southland — ‘Tiger Rag’!”

https://clemson.world/archive/tiger-rag-the-song-that-shakes-the-southland/

Clemson.edu adds the following:

“Tiger Fanfare” by Band Director Mark Spede was added in 2003, and today the band has more than 15 ways to play what’s known as “the song that shakes the Southland.” In 1976, the Textile Club began to sell cloth Tiger Rags for $1 as a fundraiser. Today Tiger Rags travel all over the world in the hands of thousands of Clemson students, faculty, staff, fans and alumni, displayed in photographs as symbols of Tiger pride.”

Tiger Rag Lyrics:

[Verse]
Long ago way down in the jungle
Someone got an inspiration for a tune
And that jingle came from the jungle
Became famous mighty soon
Thrills and chills it sends through you
Hot so hot it burns you too
Though it's just the growl of the Tiger
It was written in a syncopated way
More and more they yell for the Tiger
Everywhere you go today, they're shoutin':

[Chorus]
Where's that Tiger?
Where's that Tiger?
Where's that Tiger?
Where's that Tiger?
Hold that Tiger!
Hold that Tiger!
Hold that Tiger!
C-L-E-M-S-O… N!

82 - The Clemson Tigers Have Been Running Down the Hill for 82 Seasons

16

Jun 10, 2024, 6:33 AM

Brent Musberger called it the 25 Most Exciting Seconds in College Football! He was 100% right!

History:

In 1942, Clemson football players began running down the Hill more out of expedience than it did out of a desire to start one of college football’s best traditions. According to Upcountryhistorical.org:

The run down The Hill originated out of necessity. When Clemson Memorial Stadium was opened in 1942, the locker room was located in the Clemson Field House, which was right down the street from the Hill that led to the east end zone. Clemson would get dressed, walk down the street, and run down the hill so they could get to the field and warm up.

In the mid-1960s a man named Sam Jones gave Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard a rock from Death Valley, CA as a gift. After years of sitting in his office, Howard told his assistant to “throw it over in the valley”. The assistant then made a podium for the rock and set it on the top of the valley. The players then began the tradition of rubbing the rock and running down the hill before the game.

https://upcountryhistorical.org/items/show/23#:~:text=The%20run%20down%20The%20Hill,to%20the%20east%20end%20zone.

Actually there was a break in the 82 season run of running down the Hill. Technically, therefore, the team has been running down the Hill for 80 – but over an 82 season span. The two years without the Hill run were a Coach Hootie Ingram decision. According to ClemsonTigers:

“When Hootie Ingram succeeded Howard as head coach in 1970, he made the logical decision that the team would make its final entrance out of the new dressing room in the West end zone. In all home games during the 1970 and 1971 seasons and the first four games of 1972 when the Tigers did not run down the Hill, their combined record was 6-9.

The seniors, led by Ben Anderson, decided they wanted to come down the Hill prior to the South Carolina contest, the finale of the 1972 season. The result, in a cold, freezing rain, was a 7-6 victory when Jimmy Williamson knocked down a two-point conversion attempt, which preserved the narrow win.

Clemson has made the entrance every home game since 1942, except for the years mentioned above and the first game of 1973 (435 times entering 2024).”

https://clemsontigers.com/the-hill/

Players Perspectives:

TNet provided some of Clemson’s players’ perspectives:

"When you get to the bottom, its like you're in a hole and all around you are nothing but Clemson fans. It's like the crowd is one big voice. You feel like little kings," said Tiger tailback Rodney Blunt.

David Treadwell, a 1987 All-American placekicker for Clemson said, "Clemson's record at home is not a coincidence. Running down the hill is a part of that record. You get so inspired, and so much of college football is about emotion. You get out of that bus and you hear the roar of the crowd and it gives you chills up and down your spine.

"Running down the hill is still talked about everywhere I go," said Jerry Butler, an All-American on the 1978 team who went on to a lengthy pro career with the Buffalo Bills. "Players who played against Clemson when I was in college always remember us rubbing that rock and thinking we would gain some type of spirit coming down that hill. The adrenaline rush was unbelievable for a Clemson player and it was quite a shock for the opponent."
