North Carolina Highway 45 is a 121.7-mile state highway that runs from the south end at NC 12 in Ocracoke to the north end at US 13/US 158 near Winton. The first 31.8 miles of NC 45 is the Swan-Quarter to Ocracoke Ferry.

The north end of NC 45 parallels the Chowan River which flows into Albemarle Sound. NC 45 then heads further southeast and passes the northeast end of the Pungo River which flows into the Pamlico River which flows into Pamlico Sound. The Pamlico River is a tidal river which starts as the Tar River that joins Tranters Creek. The Tuscarora tribe originally settled along the river, but later pirates, then tobacco farmers settled along the river. Tobacco farming continues. Pamlico Sound is an estuarine lagoon, the largest lagoon on the North American east coast. Pamlico Sound, along with Albemarle Sound and Currituck Sound on the northeastern North Carolina coast are lined with a row of barrier islands known as the Outer Banks. The area has several NWRs and is home to an abundance of wildlife.

45 - 45-0 Another Classic!!!

There are so many classics in the Clemson vs South Carolina series. 1989’s 45-0 was another great one!!

Tony Crumpton (Crump) described the game as follows on Tigernet:

“On a chilly November night in Columbia in 1989, Danny Ford broke out the orange britches for their first road game, and rookie head coach Sparky Woods was introduced to the domination that so many Gamecocks before and since have come to know so well. As Woods and injured QB Todd Ellis both watched helplessly from the sideline, Clemson utilized a dominant rushing attack led by Terry Allen and a bevy of sledgehammer fullbacks, as the Clemson offensive line pushed Carolina's defense halfway to Bull Street all night long, stopping only to celebrate their touchdowns. Not to be undone, the Clemson defense unleashed the full force of its legion of linebackers and linemen, as Levon Kirkland and Vance Hammond turned garnet and black to black and blue while consistently setting up shop in the Carolina backfield.

In what would prove to be Danny Ford's last entry in the Palmetto Bowl series, the Tigers created a manhandled masterpiece that has lived in infamy in Gamecock lore and proven to be one of Clemson's finest moments in a rivalry that has featured many high points for the good guys.”

South Carolina’s offense against Clemson’s defense was a mismatch of nightmarish proportions for the Chickens. UPI provides the following stats:

“The Tigers held USC to 155 yards total offense, intercepted three passes and registered two sacks for 20 yards in losses. South Carolina quarterbacks Dickie DeMasi and Pat Turner completed 7 of 15 passes for 36 yards.
…
South Carolina's best scoring chances were a missed 47-yard field goal attempt by Collin Mackie in the second quarter and a desperation pass by DeMasi intercepted in the end zone by Eric Jeter on the last play of the game.”
