29 - TigerNet has been Connecting Clemson Fans for 29 Great Years

2
22

Aug 2, 2024, 12:05 AM

Our own Tigernet turns 29 this year. If you are like me, Tigernet has become a part of your Clemson fandom. A special thanks to Tigernet and its creators for an outstanding place for Clemson information and insights – as well as a place for Clemson fans to congregate!

Tigernet kindly shares its history on its own site. According to Tigernet’s history page, the site began in 1995:

“Brian Cross - Co-founder / Lead bug producer and fixer
Co-founded TigerNet in 1995. Brian graduated from Clemson in 1997 with a B.S. in Computer Science.
________________________________________
Tommy Crumpton - Co-founder / Senior Editor / Photographer
Co-founded the Unofficial Clemson Football Page in Dec 1995 from his dorm room at Clemson House. Eventually that site would become TigerNet.com and the rest is history. Tommy has a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from Clemson.”

Tigernet’s page of its history also adds the following:

“TigerNet is the oldest and largest Clemson Sports fan site. Founded in 1995 in Clemson House Room 632 (RIP) by 3 computer science students. TigerNet was the very first Clemson Sports website, even pre-dating Clemson's official site. Our content is 100% free. We do not block articles or board posts behind a paywall like most sites. We are supported by ads, but if those really bother you, we offer an ultimate level membership that is cheaper than other sites that removes all the ads. See the UPGRADE PAGE for details. Contact us any time with questions, comments, or concerns. All emails are answered personally by B-Meist, a co-founder of TigerNet. Thanks so much for visiting or being a member, and please tell a friend about us!”

https://www.tigernet.com/about

Love the fact that Tigernet originated on campus. And by Clemson students at the time! Outstanding!!! (Makes me wonder how many of my own students are currently creating something really cool!)

Excellent (and Well-Deserved) Recognition:

In early 2022, Tigernet was named the No. 1 college football message board on the Internet! As posted on Tigernet:

“TigerNet.com was recently ranked the No. 1 college football message board on the Internet.
The rankings were based on "content, traffic, emotion, humor, anger, hate, unreasonableness, and insanity."

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/news/tigernet-ranked-no.-1-college-football-message-board-39441

I would say that seems right!

In December 2022, Tigernet introduced TNet coins and created a new world currency – NO Small Feat There! Starting at that time, TNetters could give other TNetters new awards to show their appreciation for a specific post. Another fun way to connect TNetters to each other and to the site. TNetters now have interesting trophy cases to go with their profiles as well.

The past fall, GaTiger5® created a great thread asking TNetters to describe Tigernet in one word. The word that came to mind for me was “fun.” I also loved how others described TNet in one word using a word such as: “Addictive,” “Unique,” “Informative.” I assume “Infested” was a reference to too many non-Tiger fans acting like the knuckleheads they are (which can also be part of the fun as well).

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/if-you-could-33573225

The biggest part of why Tigernet is so much fun is the people. The site provides statistics on its audience for companies interested in promoting through the site:

“Reach the #1 Clemson Sports Audience Online:
• average of 750,000+ unique visitors per month
• 200,000+ Facebook Fans
• 105,000+ Twitter Followers
• 50,000 Instagram Followers
• Oldest and largest online Clemson Community since our inception in 1995

Audience Statistics:
• Male: 95% Male
• Affluent: 47% HHI of $100K+ per year
• Mobile: 50%+ visit from a mobile device
• 80% are business professionals, proprietors, or managers
• 87% are college graduates; 38% have a post graduate education
• 72% are married; 44% have children

Geographic Location:
• South Carolina - 44%
• North Carolina - 16%
• Georgia - 9.8%
• Tennessee - 7.5%
• Texas - 4.5%
• Florida - 3%

https://www.tigernet.com/advertise

Tigernet has always had a number of discussion boards that give a reader multiple choices for topics of focus. Tigernet also has Twitter (X) and Facebook pages:

- Twitter: https://twitter.com/ClemsonTigerNet?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

- Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/tigernetrecruiting/

Creating a great fan site from a dorm room is no small feat – particularly in the 1990s. Credit to B-Meist® and Crump® for offering a great site for Clemson fans to congregate.

Thanks, Tigernet is now a part of the Clemson fan experience.

Cheers, Fellow TNetters!!

29 - Josh Cody Won 29 Games as Clemson Head Coach

20

Aug 2, 2024, 12:06 AM

Clemson Head Coach Josh Cody was likely the Original:

I saw a recent thread asking TNetters who they think of as the top “Coot Killa.” There were plenty of arguments for Charlie Whitehurst (only 4-0 starting QB in the Clemson-Chicken series). And plenty of good arguments for Deshaun Watson (also undefeated against the Gamechickens – and beat them while playing through injury as a true freshman). Each of them were certainly Coot Killas!

But HC Josh Cody was crushing Chicken dreams decades earlier. He was also a Coot Killa during his time in God’s Country! Perhaps, he was the one who originated the distinction!

According to Sports Illustrated:

“Josh Cody had a 4-0 record for Clemson against South Carolina between 1927-30. He is the only coach in the series to have a perfect record with a minimum of three games coached.”

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/ten-unusual-facts-clemson-south-carolina

Before Clemson:

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Cody played football at Vanderbilt. He remains the only Commodore to earn All-America honors three times (1915, ’16, and ’19). The 1920 Vanderbilt graduate was selected as an All-Time All-America player by the Football Writers Association. The Commodores had a 23-9-3 record, as he was a devastating lineman on both sides of the ball under legendary head coach Dan McGugin. On occasion, he played in the backfield, and was both a great passer and drop-kicker. He once converted on a 45-yard drop-kick against Michigan. As one teammate recalled, “He would tell the running backs on which side of him to go, and you could depend on him to take out two men as needed. He was the best football player I’ve ever seen.”

Cody also played basketball, baseball, and was on the track team at Vanderbilt, earning 13 varsity letters in all. And, if this was not enough, he was a lieutenant in World War I in 1917 and 1918. Another teammate who witnessed his greatness once said, “He was a farm boy and he had no polish, but he was very honest and sincere.

He didn’t have a scholarship - we had none in those days - but he had a real job. He cleaned the gym every day, cleaned up the locker rooms and the showers, and tended to the coal furnace after practice.” There were also many documentations to his toughness. Teammates remember that he did not like to wear pads, so he cut up an old quilt and sewed it into the shoulders of his jersey.”

https://clemsontigers.com/josh-cody-big-man-on-campus/
Wow!! Just…Wow!!

After Vanderbilt, Cody coached at Mercer and Vanderbilt (his alma mater) before coming to Clemson.

While at Clemson:

According to Clemsonwiki:

“Josh Cody (June 11, 1892 - June 17, 1961) was Clemson's fifteenth head football coach, serving for four years, 1927-1930. Known as "big man" (6' 2", 220 pounds), he was a much revered figure at Clemson, defeating South Carolina in all four meetings with that team, as well as three straight wins over Furman. He remains the only coach to have held the office for more than two seasons to never lose a game to the Gamecocks.

In 41 games at the Clemson head coaching position, Cody was 29-11-1, 13-0-1 at home, for a .720 winning percentage.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/Josh_Cody

Unless I am mistaken, I believe the only other Head Coach to be undefeated against the Chickens was Charley Pell, who coached only two seasons at Clemson – hence Cody “remains the only coach to have held the office for more than two seasons to never lose a game to the Gamecocks.”

Cody was also the head basketball coach at Clemson. Clemsonwiki also states the following:

“Cody also coached basketball at Clemson for five years, the longest tenure for a Clemson coach in the first 25 years of the sport at the college, taking them to a 16-9 record in 1930. During the 1928-1930 seasons, Clemson was 22-4 at home. Cody's overall basketball record at Clemson was 48-55.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/Josh_Cody

After Clemson:

Josh Cody left Clemson to return to Vanderbilt for 1931-1932 season (his second stint at his alma mater). He later coached at Florida and at Temple.

According to Wikipedia:
- In 1969: The Associated Press named Josh Cody to the Southeast Area All-Time football team
- In 1970: Cody was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame

Record at Clemson vs the Chickens:

As for that 4-0 record against the Gamechickens:
- 1927: Clemson 20 Chickens 0
- 1928: Clemson 32 Chickens 0
- 1929: Clemson 21 Chickens 14
- 1930: Clemson 20 Chickens 7

Collectively (1927-1930):
- Clemson 93 Chickens 21

Coot Killa!

U.S. Route 29 is a 1,043.3-mile-long United States Highway that runs from the south end at US 90/US 98 in Pensacola, Florida to the north end at MD 99 in Ellicott City, Maryland, also going through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and DC. The 110.2 miles of US 29 in South Carolina run from the Georgia line on the Savannah River below Hartwell Damm to the North Carolina line near Grover. Many of us know US 29 as Mills Avenue, Church Street, and Wade Hampton Boulevard in Greenville.

About 40 miles southwest of US 29 crossing the Savannah River and the SC/GA line, US 29 runs through Athens, Georgia before veering west toward Atlanta. Athens is a city of 128,000 in Clarke County where it established a unified government in 1991 referred to as Athens-Clarke County. The University of Georgia contributed to much of the city's initial growth and now it is basically a college town. Athens started on the Oconee River at a settlement originally called Cedar Shoals. UGA had already been chartered in 1785 and was still under construction when Cedar Shoals became Athens in 1801 and the first class graduated in 1804. Actress Kim Basinger and actor Jeff Daniels are from Athens. R.E.M. and the B-52s got their starts in Athens at the 40 Watt Club. Athens is known for its antebellum architecture and fast cars.
