176 - Martavis Bryant Put Up 176 Yards vs Ga Tech in 2013

Martavis Bryant (2011-2013) is fondly remembered as a highly talented member of WRU. He spent his first couple of seasons, however, only periodically showing glimpses of his potential – only isolated moments in which his immense talent would shine.

Then the light seemed to come on during Bryant’s third season. As his junior season progressed, his performances skyrocketed. Poor Ga Tech took the brunt of Bryant’s talents as he was really hitting his stride. Too bad Yellow Jackets (Final Score: #8 Clemson 55 Ga Tech 31)!

According to GoUpstate:

Now late into his junior season, Bryant has finally found a level of consistency and had a breakout game in last week’s win over Georgia Tech when he was named ACC Receiver of the Week after catching five passes for a career-high 176 yards and a touchdown.

“Each game I’m getting better and I’ve gotten more consistent because of how good I’m practicing now with better habits,” Bryant said. “(The award) lets me know that my work is paying off and I want to continue to do even better. It’s good to get that recognition, but at the same time you’ve still got to work.”

“He’s playing really well right now and I feel like he and Tajh (Boyd) have really good chemistry which was something missing early in the year,” Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris said. … “I think he’s playing his best ball right now. Now he’s starting to figure it out and realize just how dominant of a receiver he can be.

Before leaving Clemson, Bryant set the school record for average yards per reception. According to his bio on ClemsonTigers.com:

Tall wide receiver who was one of the team’s top deep threats … one of the fastest players on the team with his 6’5″ frame … had 61 receptions for 1,354 yards and 13 touchdowns along with a 17-yard carry and 291 yards on 14 kickoff returns in 1,020 snaps over 37 games (13 starts) in his career … first in school history in yards per reception (22.2) and tied for 10th in receiving touchdowns.

After Clemson:

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Martavis Bryant with the 118th pick (4th Round) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Bryant played four of the five NFL seasons between 2014 and 2018 – missing the 2016 season. In those four seasons, three with Pittsburgh and the last one with the Oakland Raiders, Bryant recorded the following NFL stats according to Pro-Football-Reference.com:

- 145 Receptions for 2,183 Yards (15.1 Average)
- 17 Receiving Touchdowns
- 17 Rushes for 94 Yards (5.5 Average)
- 1 Rushing Touchdown

Although Bryant signed contracts with two different Canadian Football League (CFL) teams (Toronto Argonauts in 2021; Edmonton Elks in 2022), he did not play for either CFL team. He signed with the XFL Vegas Vipers in 2023. He played in eight games for the Vipers making 14 receptions for 154 yards.

He signed a practice squad contract with the Dallas Cowboys in November 2023. Here’s hoping for the best, Mr. Bryant.

Virginia State Route 176, known as Parksley Road, is a 2.58 mile state highway that starts on the west end at SR 316 in Parksley and travels southeast to US 13 in Centerville in Accomack County on the coast.

Clemson's softball opponent today is Mercer University. Mercer is a private university founded in Macon, Georgia, as Mercer Institute in 1833, gaining university status in 1837 as the oldest private university in the state. Along with the main campus in Macon, there is a campus in Atlanta and School of Medicine campuses in Savannah and Columbus. Mercer has about 9,000 students on 150 acres in liberal arts, sciences, business, education, music, engineering, and medicine. The sports teams, the Bears, compete in NCAA Division I FCS level in the Southern Conference. Notable alumni include Tom Abbott, Steve Berry, Nancy Grace, and Bill Yoast from Remember the Titans.
