The series with the Gamechickens returns after the 1902 riots!
- And with a very familiar outcome!

And that Clemson win over the Chickens starts Clemson’s streak of shutting out three opponents in a 10-day span!

“The 1909 Clemson Tigers football team represented Clemson Agricultural College—now known as Clemson University—as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) during the 1909 college football season. Under Bob Williams, who returned for his second season as head coach after having helped the team in 1906, the Tigers compiled an overall record of 6–3 with a mark of 2–2 in SIAA play. C. M. Robbs was the team captain”

Noteworthy:

No doubt Gamechicken fans enjoyed not playing Clemson for several seasons. But in 1909, Clemson played the South Carolina Gamechickens again for the first time since the riots of 1902. The series picked right back up with Clemson shutting out the Chickens 6-0. With the win, Clemson now led the series with the Gamechickens 5-2.

For the 6th straight season, Clemson had a new head football coach in 1909 (six head coaches each served one season as coach). Bob Williams, however, was returning to Clemson having already served as head coach for one season in 1906.

According to ClemsonWiki, Clemson first installed practice lights for late night practice drills in 1909:

October 1909: Five electric lights installed on the football practice fields for the first time to facilitate drills after darkness falls.

“November 4: The Clemson-South Carolina game resumes after a six-year absence. Clemson wins, 6-0, in Columbia at the State Fair. Tigers lead series, 5-2.”

ClemsonTigers.com points out an interesting aspect of Clemson’s 1909 schedule:

“From 1907-13, Clemson and Georgia played in Augusta, GA each year in early November as part of the Georgia-Carolina Fair. The 1909 meeting fell on Wednesday, November 10 and represented the second leg of one of the more amazing achievements in Clemson football history, as the Tigers won three games by shutout in three different cities in a 10-day span.

Clemson began its march by meeting South Carolina in Columbia on Thursday, November 4 as part of the South Carolina State Fair. The hype for that game may have matched the anticipation for tonight’s top-10 showdown, as it marked the resumption of the Clemson-South Carolina rivalry, which had been put on hold for six years after a riot among the two student bodies took place following the 1902 game. The Tigers prevailed 6-0 on the strength of a three-yard touchdown run by fullback C.M. Robbs late in the first half and an extra point by W.M. White (touchdowns were worth five points in 1909).

Six days later, Clemson crossed the border to face the Bulldogs in a 3:00 PM contest. The Augusta Chronicle reported that the crowds of 10,000-15,000 were the largest in the four-year history of the Georgia-Carolina Fair and that 2,000 highly-enthusiastic fans attended the game.

Clemson quarterback E.H. Pinkney was the star, as he piled up several long runs and completed a 30-yard touchdown pass (the forward pass had just become legal in 1906) in the middle of the first half. The Tigers missed the point-after try and led 5-0.

Clemson threatened with a trip to the Bulldog 15 late in the second half, but a holding penalty took the Tigers out of scoring position. The Clemson defense continued its stingy ways, however, and the Tigers held on for a 5-0 win, earning their second shutout in six days.

From Augusta, Clemson traveled to Charleston to take on fellow Palmetto State, all-male military school The Citadel in a traditional Saturday contest at Hampton Park. After a sluggish, scoreless first half, Clemson pulled away with three second-half touchdowns and two PATs for a 17-0 victory.”

“Clemson’s 1909 team under Bob Williams posted a 6-3 record. The season was highlighted with back-to-back shutout wins over South Carolina (6-0) and Georgia (5-0). It is the only time Clemson has had a shutout victory over South Carolina and Georgia in one season.”

It is interesting that five out of Clemson’s six wins were shutouts.
