101 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 2-6 in 1924

The Bud Saunders era continues – but with a bit of a downturn.

“Led by second-year head coach Bud Saunders, the Tigers compiled an overall record of 2–6 with a mark of 0–3 in conference play, tying for 19th place in the SoCon.”

Of Note:

Each of Clemson’s first three games ended in a shutout. Clemson opened the season by crushing Elon 60-0. Sadly Clemson then lost to Alabama Polytechnic College (later known as Auburn) in Game 2 13-0. The good Guys then bounced back to shutout PC 14-0.

After that 2-1 start it was all downhill from there! Clemson lost its final 5 games. Only one of those games did not end in a shutout,

According to ClemsonTigers.com, Clemson baseball recorded another no hitter:

“April 17, 1924 – Lefty Smith pitched a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over South Carolina.”

This is the 3rd no-hitter in Clemson history. The first was in 1913 (so 3rd in just the previous 12 seasons).

“The Brotherhood of Tigers is organized in 1924 and all cadets given membership. The organization proves to be too large and cumbersome to accomplish anything and slowly falls apart. Tiger Brotherhood will be founded in 1928, replacing the first organization.”

Also in 1924: Another student protest!

According to DocumentingHistory.Clemson.edu:

“On October 13, 1924, Clemson was once again entangled in student dissent. After members of the senior class complained to President Samuel Earle about food conditions at a recent meal, Commandant Cole met with the Senior Class Committee. At this meeting, Commandant Cole claimed to smell alcohol on the breath of the senior class president and captain of the football team, R. F. "Butch" Holohan. Cadet Holohan, having faced accusations of alcohol consumption before, was suspended by the Disciplinary Committee and promptly sent home.

Immediately, the senior class banded together on Riggs Atheltic Field and generated a list of demands. Their demands included improved food, changes to the mess hall staff, and the reinstatement of Cadet Holohan. This last demand seems to have been motivated by the fact that the Clemson football team faced an upcoming game against archrival University of South Carolina. President Earle agreed to investigate the food conditions (indeed, he directed a professor of chemistry to test the food for contamination), but he firmly rejected the request for Holohan's reinstatement. Nearly 250 students, mostly belonging to the senior class, were dissatisfied and stated that they "were walking" (Reel 239).

By October 20, the Board of Trustees had met and determined that the protest was entirely baseless. Along with the findings of the State Board of Health, the Board of Trustees presented figures indicating an increase in food quantity and no anomalies in discipline. Nevertheless, several students refused to return to campus. It is unclear the exact reason for these requests for severance, but these students likely withdrew based on the will of their parents.”
