PT Countdown, day 74: Tungsten!

Thanks O.J.
Periodic Table Countdown! Join us as we count our way down to Hydrogen and the kick off of Clemson Football 2025!

Element 74 is Tungsten!
Tungsten is also known as Wolfram, which is why its symbol in the periodic table is "W"

Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals at 6,192 °F. Thus it has been used in such high-temperature applications as filament for incandescent bulbs, and for the leading edges of fins on hypersonic missiles. Combining equal number of tungsten atoms with carbon atoms generates tungsten carbide, second only to diamond in hardness and ideal for use in drill bits to cut through other metals.

Tungsten can also be used to make highly durable jewelry.

Associate professor of mechanical engineering at Clemson University Enrique Martínez Sáez is researching the use of tungsten in fusion reactors.

Todays player spotlight is #74 Brayden Jacobs. He is a true freshmen offensive lineman for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Brayden was a unanimous 4 star prospect from Milton HS. He was “ranked as the No. 51 player in the nation by 247Sports, which also listed him as eighth-best player in Georgia and eighth-best offensive tackle in the country … ranked No. 125 overall by Rivals, as well as the 16th-best at his position and 15th-best player in Georgia … ranked among the nation’s top 45 offensive tackles by both ESPN (35) and On3 (43)”. He also competed in wrestling and swimming in high school.

Brayden’s father father, Brandon Jacobs, was a two time Super Bowl champion RB with the New York Giants. Brandon is still the all time leader in rushing touchdowns for the Giants with 60 rushing TDS for his career in NY. So Brayden is the son of a 2 time Super Bowl champion.

Here is an article where Brayden’s dad talks about his son: https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/former-nfl-standouts-break-down-clemsons-special-impact-on-their-sons-commitments-23111

74 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 7-3 in 1951

Clemson Football tells its conference what it can do with its rules that Clemson did not like.
- Amen, Clemson!!

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1951 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College in the Southern Conference during the 1951 college football season. In its 12th season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 7–3 record (3–1 against conference opponents), finished fifth in the Southern Conference, was tied with Holy Cross at No. 19 in the final AP Poll, lost to Miami (FL) in the 1952 Gator Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a total of 196 to 97.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1951_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Worthy of Note:

According to Wikipedia:

“Bob Patton was the team captain. The team's statistical leaders included tailback Billy Hair with 1,004 passing yards and 698 rushing yards and end Glenn Smith with 42 points (7 touchdowns).

Billy Hair and Glenn Smith were selected as first-team players on the 1951 All-Southern Conference football team. Four Clemson players were named to the All-South Carolina football team for 1951: Hair, Smith, tackle Bob Patton, and guard Dan DiMucci.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1951_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

ClemsonWiki adds the following about Clemson’s final ranking:

“Clemson ends the 1951 football season ranked 20th in the Associated Press poll, but not ranked in the United Press International top twenty.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1951

ClemsonTigers.com provides some amazing insight into the 1951 season and Clemson’s decision to leave the Southern Conference:

Nov. 27, 1951 – Clemson accepted a bid to play in the Gator Bowl. This was done against the wishes of the Southern Conference, who had made a rule its members could not go to a bowl game. Clemson and Maryland, which both accepted bowl bids were given sanctions. The two teams were told they will not be allowed to play any other conference teams in 1952. This resulted in teams leaving the Southern Conference and forming the ACC.

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

Clemson Tigers.com has an extensive look at the 1951 season. Here are just a few snippets of this excellent articl. For the full article see: https://clemsontigers.com/the-1951-clemson-tigers/.

“Clemson’s 1951 football team is special for many reasons. Not only did it finish the season ranked among the top 20 teams in the nation, but it ended the year in the Gator Bowl, quite an accomplishment in those days considering there were only five bowl games played. It was a team that established records on an individual and team basis that still stand 50 years later.

Toughest job of all was the task facing offensive backfield coach Covington (Goat) McMillan. The “dream backfield” of tailback Jackie Calvert, wingback Ray Mathews, fullback Fred Cone, and blocking back #### Hendley (grandfather of Clemson All-America golfer Lucas Glover) was gone-Mathews, Cone, and Hendley to the NFL. Only the tailback position was set, with Billy Hair, MVP in the Orange Bowl win over Miami, seemingly the equal of Clemson’s best of the past.

To fill the wingback slot, McMillan persuaded the parents of brilliant Rock Hill back Buck George of the Catawba Indians to move in with him for his final semester of high school and to work out in the spring with the Clemson varsity. (Because of the Korean War, the NCAA okayed the use of freshmen in varsity play once again.) At blocking back, Coach Frank Howard ultimately decided to move reserve offensive guard George Rodgers to that position. And at fullback, the job was divided between 220-pound junior Jim Shirley, who had seen limited action in 1950, and sophomore Lawrence Gressette, now the chairman of the Clemson Board of Trustees. End Coach Bob Jones lost Bob Hudson to the NFL, Jim Calvert to polio in the summer, and Dreher Gaskin to a broken leg in the Presbyterian opener. Returning was the versatile Glenn Smith, but lightly used reserves Otis Kempson on offense and Frank Gentry and George Withers had to mature in a hurry.

The payoff would be bigger than in 1949 when they met in Rice’s old 37,000-seat stadium. On that occasion the Tigers were clobbered 33-7, with Neely’s Owls going on to finish number five in the nation and justify a new stadium. Howard motivated his team in many ways, including housing them in “the world’s swankiest new hotel”-The Shamrock, near the Rice campus.
The relatively green Tigers did their homework to such an extent that one Rice player, frustrated at his failure to keep “Black Cat” Barton out of his team’s backfield, mumbled, “You seem to know every move I make,” to which Barton responded, “Son, I know what you had for breakfast this morning.”

And then a funny thing happened as “Bohunk” Coach Bob Smith (former Furman head coach and athletic director) began studying film of Wake’s games. Deacon quarterback star Dickie Davis inadvertently moved his left foot before the ball was snapped whenever he was going to pass. With this knowledge, the Tiger defense smothered the Wake offense.”

More on the Clemson and Maryland probations:

According to Wikipedia:

“When Clemson and Maryland defied the Southern Conference's ban on postseason games by participating in bowl games after the 1951 season, the conference placed both schools on probation for one year and imposed a football scheduling boycott against them. Accordingly, Clemson was able to play games against only two conference opponents in 1952: Maryland (also on probation) and South Carolina (the annual "Big Thursday" rivalry game was set by the South Carolina Legislature and was therefore exempted from the boycott).”

“December 5: Former baseball player "Shoeless Joe" Jackson dies in Greenville, where he operated a liquor store. He was 63. His funeral is held in the Baptist Church in Brandon where he had lived as a young man.”
