on the bored. Keith Jackson, one of the best to call college football games, was the broadcaster that night....but not once did he point out that Coach Woody Hayes thru a punch at a Clemson player....still some good stuff!!! Woody Hayes never coached another game. The Gator Bowl and Clemson football....a lot of college football history between the two. Go Tigers, Beat Kentucky!!!

I was there at the game sitting in the end zone with my two off-campus roommates. This was my senior year at Clemson. I had been to the gator bowl the previous year when Pittsburgh swamped us 34 to 3.Back then there was no such thing as a Jumbotron at the stadium, so we had no idea Coach Hayes had punched Charlie After the interception. After the game we went to eat at a Denny’s restaurant there in Jacksonville, and several customers there asked us what we thought about the punch. That is the first we’ve heard of it!! But what an exciting game it was! a great end to a great season, which was also the senior year for Steve Fuller And Jerry Butler.

Yep….was there for both also. When we played Marino and Co., our seats were above where they exited and entered the their locker room. I could have stood up and cracked an egg on Marino’s head if I had one. The next year we were across the field from where Hayes struck Bauman and didn’t know it happened until we got back to my Aunt’s house. We watched it on the late local news.

Pitt was blesses that day. Qb threw the ball to a receiver. It bounced off his hands and right into another receiver's hands who ran for about an eighty yard touchdown. It was just their night.

Thousands of us that were at the game had no idea Woody threw a punch either. For us, we learned about the punch at breakfast at the Waffle House near the Jax Airport.

Likewise, I was an all things football obsessed nine year old sitting at the foot of my parents bed watching it on a 12” Sony with rabbit ears. Growing up in central Florida, I was already a huge Gator fan. Didn’t know much about Clemson at the time, but I knew I didn’t have any good feelings about Woody Hayes.
Saw the punch and then Woody got fired. I thought then that this Clemson team might be good to learn more about….

I was there. Only learned the next day driving back home listening to the radio about Woody hitting Bauman and being fired.

Oh, rode down in teams elevator with CU President Robert Edwards and he & I discussed it and he saidWoody had been fired..

Like most everyone else, we didn’t know about the punch until the next day.
It was a great game.
Thing I remember was that same as year before, we left Charleston and picked up 95 after the Beaufort turn off. The interstate was wall to wall Clemson. All the cars and RVs had signs and Clemson gear. Saw a lot of signs
“ To Hell With Pell
All Aboard With Ford”.
The stadium was packed as well. Great show by Tigers

Was there with a crowd of SAE’s and had a fun night after the game. Went back to hotel, and the morning paper was already in the rack for the next day with ‘Woody fired’ front page. All I saw was a little bench clearing on the field. Charley Baughman instantly went from a backup defensive lineman to appearing on the Tonight show.

I talked to Charlie after the game and he said that he didn't even feel the punch. He said a seventy year old man hit him in full gear. Didn't feel anything. Plus he had about five teammates patting him on the back congratulating him.

Woody Hayes was pissed because Charlie was driven off the line and decided to drop back in coverage. He watched the quarterback's eyes and moved over in the slot to make the play.

I was there but we didn't know what had happened. Only there was a pile of coaches and players on the field for a while. I think we heard about what happened on the radio after the game.

Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian saying they never saw anything was just covering for Hayes. Parseghian had been an assistant under Hayes at Miami of Ohio.
It is funny that in the replay in the OP's video at about 2:50 when it was in slow motion and at a different angle, Jackson still says he didn't see anything, which most likely meant he did.

So, the play was shown live. Then they cut to a commercial. I seem to recall the guys in the booth later said they thought they saw the punch but weren't sure and no one could definitely confirm it, so they didn't want to accuse Woody without the proof.

I’m heading down to your state on Thursday to attend Fridays Gator Bowl. My family has a long history with that game!
My late father (left Clemson his junior year in 1942 for WWII) and two of his brothers-in-law decided to catch the train from Greenwood down to Jacksonville for the Jan 1, 1949 Gator Bowl against Missouri.
All of the three wives were expecting (one was me!) and couldn’t travel in their “condition.” Clemson had a 10-0 season and won over Missouri 24-23, under legandary head coach, Frank Howard.
The husband’s decided to buy the wives something “special” and my father bought an aluminum orange juicer and some Florida oranges. Well, it may have been the hormones but the wives were, shall we say, less than thrilled. My dad bore the scar on his bald head the rest of his life as witness to my mother’s ire!
Now if you can give me a lead to where I can purchase a juicer, I’ll press my luck and bring one back to my wife of 53 years. And hope her aim isn’t as accurate as my mother’s!

The 1949 game has a special place in my family lore also. My grandparents went with 2 of their friends. Drove from Anderson to Jacksonville. It was the first football game my grandmother ever went to! I have a couple of paper items from that game - the game program and a restaurant menu that was re-done especially for the Gator Bowl.

Yep. I don't know if Jackson just didn't want to call Hayes out or what, but I couldn't believe Jackson could watch the replay and act like nothing happened. This game was five days after I got married, and I taught my wife some new words.

I knew the wedgebreaker at the time. Remember them? I saw him come out at half time and asked him to get that kick returner for me. We kicked off and he ran down the field like crazy. When he got to the wedge he jumped it and hit the returner in the head/neck. He jumped up and pointed in my direction. They had to carry the returner off the field. He was a violent dude.

So much happened during that trip. The band was required to show their half time show to the network. Right in the middle of the show, the Ohio State band starts playing their fight song and marched right through the Clemson band. The network was not happy. They didn't show the Ohio State show at all and gave their time to Clemson. You won't have ever known that Ohio State brought their band.
