Brownell will MOST LIKELY never get it done at CLEMSON

May 20, 2016, 9:30 AM

Not because he doesn't get the players we need, I've been very impressed with his ability to identify, recruit, & develop talent. We have a roster full of good players that allow us to matchup with anyone. He just doesn't put them in the best position to succeed, & when you don't do that you can't reach your ceiling.

I do think he's a good dude that represents the university well & his players seem to like him but...

ROD HALL should have NEVER started at CLEMSON & JORDAN ####### ROPER should have ALWAYS been our starting PG. Especially when you're not innovative like Brownell. Good shooting, scoring & creative PG's can mask a lot of coaching deficiencies because they essentially solve a lot of the problems on the floor that coaches like Brownell can't.

He's just simply not a good coach, & it's very annoying for Clemson fans that have seen us have relative success in recent years.

The blueprint for success at Clemson & other non basketball schools & mid-majors was laid down by Oliver Purnell when he was here, and continued by Shaka Smart & Will Wade at VCU.

When you're not going to be able to get THEE top tier talent from around the country, you have to play a style that is different and annoying to your competition.

Clemson is typically never gonna beat out DUKE, UNC, & UofL for players & most of the time will be behind even the middle of the pack schools as well.

We are a football school, & there's nothing wrong with that.

What we can do is recruit a lot of ATHLETES that are able to play that HAVOC style of basketball that enables us to use our defense, depth, & overall style as a weapon & equalizer against those teams with superior talent. Aggrevation, anxiety, & exhaustion bring superior talent down to your level, and if your not as talented that's your goal, because that's your only way to beat superior talent. YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME ??

If you're playing teams that are going to beat you in a traditional style of play, then you need to do something different that is gonna allow you to bridge the proverbial gap.

Brownell doesn't do that, and he plays right into the hands of teams with superior talent & lets be serious, he also gets outcoached on a regular basis as well.

More Talent + Better Coaching > Less Talent + Average Coaching

Brownell is not innovative & he's not a problem solver that makes ingame adjustments.

He is a decent motivatior, but doing the same #### all the time eventually annoys your players & fans to the point that they just don't care as much, especially at a place like Clemson.

Coach basically relies on attacking the other teams mismatches, getting the other teams good players in foul trouble, and hoping our players shoot lights out. That is a good tactic to have in your toolbelt, but you need a better overall style imo, and then have that type of plan to use as an ambush when you're facing a team with an overwhelming star. It worked against a Duke team that had Brandon Ingram & not a lot of depth, but it doesn't breed continuity and cohesion because it's not a systematic approach to basketball that players can learn and grow into.

Basketball also is a constant eb & flow game, & coach often has a good gamelan of where we need to attack, but time & time again other more talented & more experienced coaches figure out what he's doing, make adjustments, & quite frankly just take him to school. We try to do the same things & our opponents adjust, while other teams figure us out & and we can't adjust. Notre Dame's coach owns Brownell so bad it's painful to watch. & over Brownell's time at Clemson he just hasn't gotten better. He's comfortable coaching a certain way, and when coaches aren't able to recognize their deficiencies and adjust & adapt, IT'S TIME TO GO.

For example:

Dabo Swinney was very involved in the offensive play calling when he first got the head coaching gig at Clemson, and if he continued to micromanage and call a lot of the plays he wouldn't be at Clemson anymore. But Dabo wasn't stubborn, he hired Chad Morris & then Tony Elliot & Jeff Scott. Dabo knows football, and his overall input is very helpful, but he's not an Offensive Coordinator, never will be. It's not his strength & there's nothing wrong with that.

Now Coach Brownell is no Dabo Swinney, but he does know fundamentals & he can spot & develop talent. If you have NBA aspirations, minus PG position, coach will make sure you become a good overall player, but he's just not WIRED to be a master strategist & make snap adjustments. Also, imo he's stubborn, & stubborn = predictable & predictable = NO BUENO.

Coaching basketball & being a O or D coordinator requires a certain way of thinking. You need a certain amount of maniacal intelligence to be able to read your opponents weaknesses & and overwhelming built in competitive desire to stick it people to call the right plays. You have to have the right amout of basketball knowledge, & the right life circumstances that shape you personality so you instinctively flip the ###### on your opponent. Some guys can do it, others can't.

What Brownell needs to do is find an assistant that has these qualities, let that person be in charge of game planning & adjusting, and focus on getting us talent, developing & motivating that talent, holding players accountable, repping the University well, & being more of a CEO than a micromanager.

If he does that imo he CAN succeed, if he does the same ole ####, he will get the same ###### results.

I don't anticipate him changing, because it's been my experience that people LIKE to be COMFORTABLE.

Not everyone has been through what Dabo has and been forced to adjust in life like he has.

I HOPE HE DOES, because I like Brownell, but we shall see.

May 20, 2016, 9:48 AM [ in reply to Re: Hes not a good recruiter ]

Clemson needs the 4-5 year Srs to compete with the 1 and done blue chippers at UNC and Duke. 2-3 year transfers will not give us the unity and sr leadership we need. It just proves a lack of recruiting/player development.

Square thinking.

You need to field the best team you can.

Recruit the best he talent you can get, if they're not good enough and want to get playing time somewhere else, BYE FELICIA & you go upgrade on the waiver wire while still having a strong nucleus of players that play your style.

Recipe 4 success, and would field a better team than what you're suggesting.

Imo

Re: Transfers = bandaid for poor recruiting

May 20, 2016, 10:02 AM

Transfers are a part of game now. If you don't play that game you won't field as hood of a team. Its easier to see how good a kid is once he's played in college, & if you rely solely on high school talent evaluations you're less likely to be correct about a players talents, & you put yourself at a disadvantage against teams that do take transfers because they will upgrade their roster and you won't.

Also, Jordan ROPER will play professional basketball as a POINT GUARD.

Rod Hall should have played PG

The transfer game is a part of college basketball.

IMO, with most of "us" having Brad on the hot seat...
He does return his most talented team in 2016/17- especially
if he can get Jaron to return.
No reason....no reasonnnn that shouldn't make the NCAA tourn.

Re: All kiddin' aside...

May 20, 2016, 10:35 PM

I'm with you Prime, we should be good next year.

And AS I SAID, OUR PLAYERS GET BETTER UNDER BRAD BROWNELL.

& it's a good selling point when you can go talk to recruits about how they need to develop.

WE WERE GOOD LAST YEAR, & SHOULDA BEEN IN THE TOURNAMENT!!

But we got worked in the non-conference by some teams we had no business losing to, and it was for the VERY reasons I mentioned. GOT OUTCOACHED all day. Right or wrong Prime Tiger?

I like coach, & my assessment is fair & SPOT ON. He just has to adjust & adapt or he's gonna get the same results and be gone.

He does play the same style as Barnes, he's just not as good of a recruiter as BARNES, and Barnes is a better coach than he is as well. & I don't think Barnes is a great strategist either. Coach Brownell is also more passive that Rick Barnes. Rick Barnes almost got into a fist fight with the one & only Dean Smith. Alpha male & kinda arrogant. Nothing wrong with that, especially at Clemson.

Hopefully playing at home will get us over the hump. Should be a rowdy environment.

But if you want to see a real coach, check out WILL WADE at VANDY. He's gonna work the SEC LIKE IT'S HIS JOB.

That boy is a #### good coach, & imo we should have let Brownell go and went after WADE.

PRIME, just remember when WADE starts to succeed that your boy CAPTIAN STOUDT told you so.

Cliff Ellis was a GREAT COACH at CLEMSON that had CLEMSON BASKETBALL as a contender by doing exactly what I proposed in regards to transfers. Remember, this is CLEMSON BASKETBALL we're talking about. Thanks for making my point.

> Barnes was the closest we've ever had to sustained
> success. And he played a style very much like BB.
> Your argument against BB is stylistic and Barnes

And he had a creative, left handed, scoring PG who could shoot. T-Mac masked his deficiencies as a coach. Just like I was suggesting. He was also on a whole other level as a coach, personality & recruiter. TEXAS AINT COMING TO GET BRAD BROWNELL, I promise you that.

LOL

Cliff Ellis = great coach = credibility blown

May 20, 2016, 1:39 PM [ in reply to Re: They didn't get it done either ]

if you take out the miracle runs in 87 and 90 he is 128-114. In 87 and 90 he hit on JUCO and his 4 year players developed. Otherwise the best season he had was 19-15 and 3 seasons at .500 or below. Again, outside of 87 and 90 he was 36-72 in conference. Even with those 2 10-4 seasons he 56-90 in the ACC. Thats about the definition of "not getting it done." I think 87 was the year we lost to Southwest Blumflub State in Round 1 in Atlanta.

So you opinion of the current situation is pretty much fubar based on your assessment of previous coaches.

Auburn relevant....HA! He had the same record at Auburn as he had at Clemson and still didn't get jack. Plus, SEC certainly doesn't measure up to the ACC.

Coastal...double Ha. THey play in a crap conference, got an auto bid and won 1 game in the tournament.

Barnes IS a great coach and totally blows your theory of needing to run a hectic style at Clemson totally out of the water. Barnes got slow, clumsy BASKETBALL players to Clemson. He won and won huge. He played the game slower than BB does. Shoot....Tom Freakin Wideman was a solid player in Barnes. Barnes' problem was Ellis' JUCO strategy left him with nothing. He couldn't spread out his recruiting classes so he was 1) going to see a drop off and 2) his wife wanted him out of Clemson.

Keep it up Chicken Boy. I can keep blowing it out of water.

THANKS DAWG! I do appreciate it. Like I said, ITS TOUGH BEING THIS AWESOME, but SOMEBODY has to do it.

I'd bet millions that
> you never saw the inside of a Clemson classroom

Correct, never went to CLEMSON. BUT Go Tigers!

> What was pistol Pete's brothers name?

Ru Ru Ronnnnnnnnie

> Never heard of the guys you referred to. And I follow
> basketball very closely!

They made a movie about one of the guys & the other is one of the WINNINGEST COACHES in SOUTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY

Me thinks you don't follow basketball as much as you say. Legend in your own mind it an.

Did your dad win any games
> coaching? I never heard of him either.

Not sure how you would have heard of him, I didn't tell you his name. Just a high school basketball coach, if you didn't know the other two guys, not sure why you would know him.

Me thinks you're not very smart & have a small mind. That's why all the knowledge I dropped on you has you so frustrated. Too much 4 u. LoL

> YOURE AWESOME.

Thanks AGAIN DAWG

> Yep. You're awesome

You've made it quite clear that you think I'm AWESOME...I GET IT! Like I said, it's hard being this awesome, just ask Walt Deptula. ?? But I'm ok with it, glad you're a Fan

I'm not Ashton Kutcher, but ForrestTiga thinks I'm awesome.

I agree

He made horrible decision after horrible decision. I stopped reading there because you clearly didnt know what you were talking about.

Had he recruited better

May 20, 2016, 11:38 AM

Neither one of them would have been an option at PG and there would be no need for this discussion. Recruiting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You nailed it. Recruiting is BB's weak spot.***

everything you said is the exact opposite of the truth except for the part about Brownell being a good dude which i would agree with.

Great days are ahead

May 21, 2016, 12:14 AM

BB is going to get it done. He has had nothing to work with as far as facilities and commitment to basketball. It is not oblong, Clemson fans don't care. But he is going to make those who follow just football, spring football, and football recruiting sit up and take notice starting next season. Better get your tickets now. Fewer seats in Littlejohn mean a tougher ticket.

I hope you're right.

I wish last years team would have started off better, because we had a good team, & I'm interested to see what Brownell would do in the Tournament.

He scouts out other teams weaknesses well, and we def have some strengths we could play to.

If JB improves his 3pt% and will continue to utilize the head fake we will be tough.

I do like our roster & I'm planning on making it to a handful of games.

We shall see.

Appreciate it EL tigre...

Could you imagine the lame oh's if I came on the board & did a 3 part series on the board? LOL!

????

Brownell's a good basketball guy & teacher. He's just not as good at snap adjustments & his style limits how effective we can be.

He could use a Shaka or Will Wade in his ear imo. & they're out there.

If it's not blatantly obvious captain snout is a coot fan, this should prove it. Completely stupid post months before basketball season even starts.
