Baseball Coaching Candidate...

There is a guy who played college baseball in the State of SC, played on 3 college World Series teams and was captain of the team, is a CWS HOF catcher, was a first round draft pick, played catcher for the Oakland A's, was groomed by a HOF college coach, has his team in the CWS for the first time, won 50 games this year, and is involved in the premier JR baseball organization in South Carolina. Anybody know who that is?

Why not? You got a Bama grad as a football coach. You like them?

I think he at least should get a call but he'd be behind the 8 ball as soon as he got here because he's a Scar guy. I think he's next in line for Kingston's job but that's just my opinion. He's doing very well at NGU and is a solid coach, recruiter and developer of talent.
Whoever we hire needs to be able to develop pitchers or have a asst. ready to pull the trigger on. Pitching at this level is paramount because they're just not that many out there. They're still developing in college. I'd like to see a guy like Travis Barbary get an interview or a call to gauge his interest. He's a local guy (Powdersville) and has been with the Dodgers organization for over 20 years as a player, scout, assistant and now a manager of one of their farm teams. He knows talent and how to develop it.
It's all going to come down to $$$...how much can you pay a coach, how much can he pay assistants and how much can we give to these kids to get them to come to CU without paying their own way for all or the majority of it.

If you can't get a name coach from a major program this would be a great hire. I would love to see Travis coaching the Tigers. Even though he didn't suit up for the tigers, he loves the university! Really good baseball mind, and an old school coach he would be. He needs to put his name in the hat!

Landon Powell has done a great job at North Greenville and I think he will get a chance soon at a D1 job. I just don't feel Clemson is the right fit either from his nor Clemson's perspective. I think if Clemson misses on the "name" coach from a major program, you'll see them go with a mid-major success like the Liberty coach.

Didn’t we try that with the last coach? That did not seem to work out too well. We are not getting ND or Florida or Michigan’s head coach. Never have

In my lifetime the program hasn't been in the shape it's in today. Wilhelm was there forever, they brought in Leggett from Western to be the coach in waiting, when Leggett lost his edge they went after a hot mid major coach in Lee. The shape the program is in dictates the decision that will be made. They'll land a named coach from a major job.

Never have? How many head coaches has Clemson hired

in your life? Two? And keep in mind Leggett was an internal hire.
You don't know what you're talking about. Powell is not even under consideration, nor should he be. Move on.

Clemson has never hired a coach from a major university worth a crap. Not even in football. All this "back the truck up" talk is ridiculous. Powell might not be under consideration but my point is that he should be.

I didn’t think a wide receivers coach from a failed coaching staff was a good fit either

I think Powell is a winning coach. I think he's waiting on the job in Cola to open up. He's a gamecock through and through. No need for the Tigers to go that route. If he were to take the Clemson job, he'd be a flight risk to leave anytime the Gamecocks are struggling...That's not what I want from my next head coach.

According to Neff's statement on the matter,
Jun 2, 2022, 2:23 PM
|
|
they've been doing their due diligence prior to the Lee decision, which tells me they've scouted the environment and opportunities and felt like the moment was right to make a change. I would further take this to mean they have a tier of specific candidates that they have already researched that they will be pursuing for the position. Who is on that list? We will soon find out.
Go Tigers!

I agree with your assessment. Neff already has his guy or at least a short list. I also think it will be a current P5 coach. While any coach is a risk in terms of being to replicate success at a new school there is less risk with a coach who has experience at the P5 level
