2015 at South Florida 2016 at Indiana 2024 at Penn State
I think it's fair to say his defense improved once he had better/more talent with which to work.

I discovered this same thing after I made a remark this morning about not being thrilled about the hire. I was basing it off of him as DC at Indiana, not realizing he was the HC for most of those years.

Yup….easier when you have better players. I don’t care how good you are as a coach….if you don’t have the players….it ain’t gonna work.

His first year as HC at Indiana, he had one of the best defensive turnarounds in CFB history with that he did with that team after he took over.
Cut down their YPG avg by almost 200yds a game. That’s insane.
Time will tell if he’s a good hire or not but have to give the benefit of the doubt that dabo did his due diligence. He understands how important this hire is for the next 5 years of Clemson football.

Tom Allen wasn’t a defensive coordinator from 2017-2023. He was a head coach. So most of that doesn’t matter. In 2015 he was at UCF, the talent drop off between them and Clemson is significant, to say the least. In 2015 Indiana had the 117th ranked total defense in the nation. They improved to 45ty the following season then to 27th the 17th season. I’d say he was doing something right. Also, Clemson has much better talent across the board than Indiana.

So if a defensive coordinator goes to a school as head coach and their defense sucks that’s not an indication of how good a defensive coach they are?
I’m not getting on that wagon.

So you need to choose one.
We either hired a guy that has had 10 years of crap defense with the last being good.
OR
We hired a guy that has 3 total years experience as a DC (same as Wes Goodwin by the way).
Pick one.

Yeah. Comparing resumes of Goodwin and Allen, that makes sense. Goodwin was an analyst who got promoted to a DC his first year. Do you see that as similar to Allen’s trajectory, really? As a seasoned head coach and DC, Allen has proven his abilities.
And again, do you really think Allen was ever his own DC when he was carrying out HC duties? Or maybe he had an autonomous DC running that side of the ball. Don’t you think that makes more sense?

It's flat false. My comparison to Goodwin is to point out how false it is. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too.
Either Allen has just as much experience as Goodwin
OR
You have to acknowledge all the crap defenses under his umbrella. Pick one.

I was going based on this site that appears to rank by points given up per game. Using this, the past year was the only top 30 (29) scoring defense since he has gotten there. Prior years were 99 (dropped from 60th with Riley) then 49, then 29. So yes, they improved each year but you could argue 29th scoring defense still sucked. Our scoring average was only 1.9 behind theirs and we played an extra game and gave up a ton of points in it. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2024-team-defense.html But look back a few years since he got there and based on this data you would see why I say sucked.
No reason to get in a wad about it. I enjoy your data driven posts, I was just making what I thought was a good point.

You really really don't like the hire. I can understand some of the disappointment when you were thinking that an NFL guy projecting up would come back down to the college level to coach at Clemson. Personally don't see guys that are on the upswing in the NFL coming to Clemson for less money and more headache(recruiting, NIL, and NCAA regulations)
I'll also say this Penn St is the only time he's gotten to coach talent on par with what he's about to have at Clemson(i know its not quite as explosive right now but pure talent wise its closer than people think).
I'm optimistic that Clemson will return to at a minimum a top 25 defense under Allen.
