coaches are not allowed to conduct practices in summer. At best, they can conduct an involuntary workout with trainers, and we are not going to hear a peep about that.

I think it was just whatever is left over. Every other number from 0-29 is retired or occupied by both an offensive and defensive guy. So his two basketball numbers--4 and 1--obviously aren't available. The clips I saw of him playing football in HS looked like he wore #15, but then he also had a photo of him in pads wearing #12 for Grayson HS. So I think he had the choice between 18 and like a random number in the 30s, 40s, or 80s.
