was halfway reasonable. I just cut two (one from Sam's and one from Ingles). Despite having belies the color of sunshine, neither was close to ripe.

One melon I cut last week had an air pocket in the middle that accounted for 1/3rd of the size. The balance of the fruit was tough and tasteless.

Is it a bad year, or is it my bad luck? Personally, I think they are rushing crops to get the early money. The first one I bought was $9.98 on Memorial Day weekend. These last two were $4.98.

We're 1-for-3. The first one, about 3 weeks ago was top notch. The next 2 didn't

have much flavor at all.

All were the same type bought at the same place (Food Lion). The last one was $4.99 - don't know what the first 2 cost.

I haven’t bought any but was getting squash from a self service roadside stand and a guy was trying to carry one under each arm. The one he dropped looked very ripe and was probably delicious.

My family used to grow watermelons.

Our general rule was that nothing before July 3rd was good and nothing after July 4th was profitable.

runs John Deeres and swaps out every 3 years. He said he farms 30,000 acres and the farrthest field that he farms is 30 miles from his shop. John Deere told him the government is pushing them to have the farmer all electric by 2027. The farmer said,"Look, when the corn comes in(THe sugar content has to get just right) we have two weeks to combine every field. We run our equipment 24 hours a day for two weeks...What happens if tractor, combine, truck goes down thirty miles from the shop...and how do we keep'em charged to run around the clock...?".....John Deere rep says,"We're workin' on it".....

Boys...these climate nuts are gonna starve us back to 1900 populations....

Next year pick you out a place and grow a few of your own. You’ll be glad you did and no melons from big chain stores grown with “steroids”.

In the Clemson WalMart Neighborhood market, they are carrying round watermelons from Coosaw Farms in Fairfax, SC. I've bought 2 in the last week and they are great...and priced at around $4.50 each.

Also, you will be supporting a Clemson family farm by purchased Coosaw Farms produce!

Choose one with a good creamy spot, which is where it laid on the ground. If it doesn’t have that it’s not ripe

In order for me to eat watermelon, it has to have been grown in the “Sleytown” area of Bamburg and Barnwell counties. That’s how you know if it’s any good. Everything else can be thrown over the fence for the cows.

Need one from the Florida Ross Chastain farm. Melon man in nascar always eats a ripe one after a win!

Yep. Bought one in Norman Park Ga from farmer that grew it. Seedless melons are crap.

Always need to remember, most fruit and vegetables sold in chain stores and most other places are varieties grown for a profit. This means they were the choice of the producer because they grow fast, look good, resist pests and diseases, ship well and don't spoil too fast.
Most are not raised so they will taste good.

They are bred for shipping durability and the flavor is not there. You can't find a Crimson Sweet and they are the best. I've bought four or five and am not buying any more. Trying to grow my own Crimson Sweets.
