Happy 44-16 day!

6 years ago, what a glorious day it was! The tickets were so cheap out there 3 random local guys who didn’t know anything about college football had tickets in the Clemson section the row in front of us, 2 bought Clemson shirts one bought a Bama shirt but at half he switched sides and hulk ripped his bama shirt off to the cheers of the entire section.

After the game we went to a bar near our hotel to celebrate and there were a couple of bama fans in there with the longest faces I’ve ever seen trying to process what had just happened to the “best team ever”, the look on their faces when I paid for my wife and my drinks with $2 paw bills was priceless.

Definitely a day for the ages!

That trip.. my ex and I traveled to all the post-season games - ACCCG's, Playoff Games, Natty's. But we usually traveled with a large entourage of family and friends. That game, it was just us two (plus two buddies from home that I didn't know had gone until we got out there). The first time I'd really spent any noticeable time in California. We were out there for 5 days or so, San Jose couldn't have been nicer. We were at Media Day, got a ton of signatures, but one that we wanted - Marty Smith - we couldn't get. He'd been standing around interviewing the players right in front of us and we, having been fans of him, wanted his autograph. He was, of course, very busy - he'd see us and start to walk over, but people were screaming at him, the chaos of the Media floor and all, it just didn't happen.

We left Media Day and walked to a little restaurant/bar to grab brunch and low and behold, Marty was sitting at the table beside us, with a group of other ESPN reporters. One reporter girl saw us looking and invited us over. We sat there talking to all of them, they basically had us just pull up chairs and sit with them - it was awesome. She had him sign her jersey. That jersey has well over 100 signatures of the best of Clemson football players - all players and coaches, except for one ESPN reporter.

Gameday, I had a buddy I'd met when he was stationed in Charleston flying C-17's. He'd since moved away, but saw some post my gf made on FB and messaged me - he was now stationed at Travis AFB, so he came down for the day. He also found a ticket for like $100 or so and we all hung out, had some beers while watching the pregame concerts. A flyover from a U2 (as a HUGE aviation nerd, that was a bucket-list thing and something I didn't know was happening until I saw it coming on the video screen).

The game - I remember as we built a lead, my ex kept asking me "we're gonna win, right?" and I told her to remember it was Saban, it wasn't over until it was over; we'd been burned before. Finally, with maybe 5 mins left and a big lead, I told her I thought we had it - up until then, we'd both sat almost silent, just trying to wrap our heads around what we were watching. We were both so excited - Tampa was more electric, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a more dominating game from us.

Anyway - what a trip and game. I had no idea today was the anniversary. The food, weather and scenery of San Jose - everything about that trip was just top-tier. As much as California gets bashed for its (many) issues, that place is special. I'd go back out there for a week like that in a second.

It was our 40th Anniversary and we planned a trip to San Francisco, California knowing the championship game was going to be played in Santa Clara. We were in the middle of Bama fans and it was glorious. We ended up in the middle of Notre Dame fans at the Cotton Bowl and it was almost as amazing.
