I think we can all agree to target violent illegals first, then other felons and petty criminals. Then we can look at something long term for the ones that have been in country for awhile and have become productive members of society. I'd rather a few good ones get deported and we realize the mistake after and bring them back rather than letting one really bad one stay because we wanted to dot the i's.

That was always the obvious solution, but it didn't sound as good, so that couldn't be the approach initially. Anyway, pretty much let everyone work that isn't a criminal outside of being here illegally. Bust the real criminals. Otherwise just leave everyone alone and have tighter border. End of story.
