Goodwin

I’m sure our offense will click more than ever next year. But as far as Goodwin goes, how far is his leash? This past season, we finished with the 28th total defense, not awful, but it definitely should have been better with the players we had on the line and LBs. The secondary is forgiven given they were young and inexperienced. But in my opinion Venables and his defenses was maybe the main key in our championship runs.

I think teams are more important than units.

Our NC's were team wins not unit wins.

Agreed. In fact, it was the Brent Venables D who got torched in both of the last 2 CFP losses - LSU 2020 and OSU 2021.

Losing Booth and Goodrich definitely hurt the secondary, but i kinda feel the play calling and D line underperformed based on all the 1st round talent going to the league.

I really don't remember seeing a lot of exotic blitz or even blitzing in general it felt like. Got burned by the screen game early in the year.

Goodwin doest strike me as an aggressive man and I think it showed in his unit. The best players and athletes on the team were on D, imo.

I think Dabo is being more patient with Goodwin and feels like he will grow into the position and become a solid DC. Having said that, I also think the D needs to take a step forward. He has a lot of talent in place and a really good class coming in so you would expect to see improvement in '23. My guess is Dabo will continue to watch the progress and provide the right incentives when and if necessary to keep Goodwin laser-focused on getting good results.

I think all of the coaches will be more focused on their job after the Streeter experiment.

yeah i think that firing made everyone on staff just a little bit uncomfortable.......which is a good thing, so folks will be more on their game, so we'll see

I think he did a good job for year one. I think he learned a lot and this year he will have an even better defense.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

Yea had no issues with the D overall. Disappointed in our DL play and I just say that because they were hyped to be dominant. They were good but not dominant imo. My expectations may have been too high regarding that unit.

I think our offense had a LOT to do with the way he called

games. Between not being able to gamble and having players frustrated at the O, I thought he did a good job.

Dabo has proven he will fire people who aren't getting the job done.

If / when the time comes - Dabo will pull the trigger.

No need to spend that much time thinking about it.

Just posting for discussion, not really overthinking anything.

He's good with the players and he did make some adjustments.

He also didn't seem to make excuses when he was under fire. I definitely think that we should have brought more pressure/blitzes this past season but I think that he's got a pretty long leash right now.

If he goes out and completely fails this season, that will change but right now I think he's pretty safe and I expect that he will improve even more.

I think all of Dabo's assistants are on "short leashes". But in Goodwin's case, I expect to see a big step up because the offense will score more points, be more dangerous and put more pressure on the opposing teams.More press translates to taking more chances and taking more chances means riskier plays leadings to turnovers.

I like our chances. I like our team. I like our coaches.

I think Goodwin would have gambled more with blitzes, but found out early he couldn’t rely on the mixed bag of DBs to hold up in coverage. Eventually we saw more bend don’t break gameplans. Perhaps like us, he came into the season believing his bevy of Dlineman would produce Power Rangers kind of pressure. That didn’t materialize so in the end the defense just wasn’t as good as it looked like on paper.

This next season may see him with more confidence in his secondary and finding ways to be more aggressive with his LBs. I still expect the Dline to be good at the run stop, but not all world in the pass rush. However, all of this is speculative before we see players develop and the influence of injuries.

I feel better about the defense being better than the offense because they need lees help from Freshmen coming in.

Wow, that's absolutely profound, given experience

Feb 2, 2023, 6:24 PM

doesn't equal talent and talent doesn't equal experience, coot.

I wish they would put him in the booth and let him do his analytical genius magic from up there. Need a more "motivational" and energetic coach on the field, especially for a smash mouth D.

I loved Brent's intensity but his defenses gave up alot of points too, but we had elite QBs and receivers to compensate. He definitely needs at least another year.

The offense can greatly affect the way the defense plays. Next year we will see how if it helps.
