Good to see Trenton Simpson getting time at Mike. That is

where he needs to be to make our defense the best it can be. He has the speed to dominate from that position and avoid the matchup problems in the passing game that slower MIKEs would have.
From the comments that we've been getting from Coach Goodwin and reports from spring practice, it seems has wants more speed on the field to clean up mistakes and what gets by our large, deep and outstanding front four and avoid passing game mismatches.

I am in the opposite. Simp is an animal and a very well rounded LB...Hes great against the run and in coverage which suits him fine playing the Nickel/Sam...He was all over the field. It scared me to read that Barrett Carter was getting reps at Nickel/Sam....He a complete and utter liability in coverage...

Simpson has good speed for the middle, but lacks the speed

and hips to be good enough in coverage to dominate at the nickel/sam full time. His size and speed will allow him to be a difference maker in the middle. Carter was a true freshman last year and got limited reps and is not the only option at the position. I didn't see the pattern of busted coverage that you suggest.
I like wear Coach Goodwin is taking us so far.

1. Barrett Carter is tailor made from an athletic standpoint to play SAM. He has the speed, lateral quickness, and size to excel there. 2. Barrett Carter has not played nearly enough to call him a "liability" anywhere. SAM is the hardest position in this defense to learn. Isaiah Simmons looked like an utter liability in coverage for a large part of 2018, up until the playoffs when something clicked. The rest is history. 3. Trenton Simpson is best suited to play Will in this defense as his best asset is his mix of strength, speed, and "slippery-ness" as a pass rusher. He's always been at his best getting into the backfield to cause havoc which is best suited for the Will spot as it lets him come off the edge frequently to take on TEs or RBs in pass pro.

Simpson needs to stay at WILL. That's where his skill set is best suited. The best case scenario is that our opening day LB corp is Simpson-Trotter-Carter.

We'll see, but I'm with Coach Goodwin on this.

Simpson can dominate in the middle if we can get the right people in the other two spots. Nickel/Sam is definitely not his ideal spot.

Simpson is talented enough to be great everywhere, but I think WILL (1) is his best suited position and (2) would be most convenient to getting our 3 most talented LBs on the field at the same time. I mean I don't care who you are, it's pretty much sacrilege to put someone named "Jeremiah Trotter" anywhere other than in the middle.
