It was my first year also. I remember his name from ROTC and my roommate for part of the year was really affected by it as they were apparently really close. I'd forgotten about his disappearance til seeing this article.

I really feel for his mother having to live with this weight for her entire life. I still believe he went hiking and got lost and was never able to make it out. I really hope it was something more malicious.

is an expansive 11,000+ acres. Very extensive trail system and easy for an inexperienced hiker who may be unfamiliar with the area to get lost. Landslides and encounters with dangerous wildlife are not uncommon.

There's one thing that I can tell you about April

in that area as it pertains to dangerous animals and I have first hand knowledge of it. April/May, you see, is the time when Black bear sows are bringing cubs out and about in the upstate of South Carolina. They are typically not too aggressive unless starving, injured, etc. But, they are QUITE aggressive if they feel their cubs are threatened.
I was a senior AFW major in April 2001 earning a little money helping a Ph.D student with their research work. This work involved checking "pitfall traps" (5 gallon buckets buried evenly with the ground) for herps that may have fallen in. Depending on the species, the herps were marked, tagged, etc.
I had run this particular set of traps numerous times and I always waited to do it on a Friday because the site was the furthest away from Clemson. On this day, I set out with my bag of tools, snake stick, etc. As I get close to the first trap, I heard a quite unusual sound...one that I had never heard before. I stopped and listened longer and it became apparent to me that a bear cub was very likely down in one of the pitfall traps...but I was very, very close to the trap at this point.
As you know, the area around Hartwell and Isaqueena is quite hilly and the trees in this area had been heavily thinned such that I could see quite well.
As it started to dawn on me that I should turn around and leave immediately, I saw Momma on the side of the hill... and she saw me...and I was between her and her cub. "They" say that you shouldn't run from a bear. Well, it is obvious to me that whoever gave that advice had never stared down the business end of a mad momma black bear. I did run. Quite fast, I might add, and I could hear her behind me the whole time as it sounded as though she was bringing trees down with her. There is no doubt that she could have caught me and kicked my a$$ quite easily, but she didn't. She stopped and turned around. I got back to my Clemson truck and surveyed the damage to my face and hands from running through limbs. I likely hurt myself worse trying to get away.
So, back to the subject, I remember Jason Knapp's disappearance as if it was yesterday. I was a second semester freshman and I remember this story and all of the speculation casting this eerie feeling across campus. I hope one day this family can find closure.

That's spooky to me. My maternal grandfather was a Knapp and this guy's picture looks a lot like me at that age.

I used to hike that trail quite often during my time at CU, but never alone.......I had heard the rumors about his disappearance but this kind of sent shivers down my spine......very, very odd.

he worked at a gas station and in presecurity cameras era went missing. Customer went in to buy something and no one was there. We always wondered about that but cases then didnt get the publicity they do now.

One of the hardest things I have ever done in my life, to this day. I still remember about losing it seeing her folks in the front row. Ugh.

Brooke and I had actually discussed earlier that day about going to Spartanburg. She had a boyfriend there and I had a good friend that was going to school close by. Plans changed unfortunately and we didn't go. When she didn't show to class the next morning and her roommate said she didn't know where she was, I felt like something was wrong.

2 split off and decided to take an OFF trail route back to the car. 1 of them ended up falling off a waterfall and died later that night.
