I didn’t want to ramble in my OP, but I could’ve brought up so many times a top program like UNC with talent barely got into the big dance and made it very far.
Syracuse in 2015 made the final 4 after finishing 9th in ACC
Syracuse in 2020 made sweet-16 after finishing 8th in ACC
NC State last year final 4, even though they aren’t the same type of program with talent.
And more
UNC is just a hot team

But, but, they won a bunch of non conf games at the very beginning of the season, when most teams hadn’t really hit any kind of stride yet, so they must be the best of all time, mostly just because it means more. LOL
