How long do you give college football until it crosses over

that somewhat blurry line of...O.K. these are professional players--enough. 2025? 2030?

It's not just college football they're killing.

Dec 7, 2021, 5:22 PM

Anything Americana is methodically being destroyed... American tradition, history, customs, all of it. And lately they've really been stepping up the pressure on anyone who believes in America.

oh brother. they took down a statue of robert e. lee. Your world hasn't come to an end. Look at the bright side. You can still buy your mentally challenged son a handgun and he can still commit a mass school shooting, so not everything in America is falling apart, clearly.

We are already at the point where a big IPTAY donor has to ask himself, "Do I want to make a large IPTAY contribution? Or should a few of us pool our money and create a non-profit NIL sponsorship to pay players?"

Gimme a break

Dec 7, 2021, 5:53 PM

It crossed over years ago when coaches starting being paid over $5 million/year and recruiting went national which made coaches use private jets for coast-to-coast recruiting day-trips and university athletic budgets exploded beyond all reason.

There is a lot more than just the above.

Stop putting the blame on the players getting a very small taste of the gravy train. That is NOT the problem, just the latest symptom.

The line has been blurry for a long time and some people here either are just becoming aware of it or believe everyone else should benefit while the players stay locked in a box.

The hand-wringing about the players is a joke. Why are they the triggers that offend so many folks?

Re: Gimme a break

Dec 7, 2021, 6:00 PM

As with many things, the money is the problem. College football probably out-earns pro football, all revenues considered. With billions of dollars in revenue comes irresistible incentive for corruption.

Re: Gimme a break

Dec 7, 2021, 6:24 PM

I understand the definition of amateur. The problem is the players are why coaches, universities, networks, announcers, talking heads, etc are rolling in crazy amounts of dough.

Keeping only the players who generate the revenue for everyone else as "amateurs" in today's environment is immoral. It's really that simple.

What the coaches (and everyone else except the players) make most certainly is NOT irrelevant. Sorry, that ship won't sail.

You can't have a multibillion industry that is growing like wildfire and decide to keep one class of "employees" in a box while everyone else parties like sailors. This is America.

If necessary, the Supreme Court will have the final say and their comments so far make it plain where they stand.

Re: Gimme a break

Dec 7, 2021, 7:08 PM

You admit the term "student athlete" is a joke. That's good.

Non-athletes don't get what some athletes get because they don't help generate revenue.

If you don't have a problem with athletes getting paid on the side, what is your issue then? If an off-campus entity wants to pay them for a very small amount of "services rendered", so be it.

What is going to happen is groups will carefully craft deals to pay athletes in ways that violate the NCAA's terms and will dare the NCAA to stop them. Then the Constitution and the Supremes will decide. This is America.

We may find out the NCAA's ability to control outside payments to athletes is a mirage. NIL might be just the pimple on the nose of the Trojan Horse.

Within 3-5 years and we'll know and I predict the Supreme Court decision(s) will be unanimous.

Dec 7, 2021, 7:09 PM [ in reply to Re: Gimme a break ]

What coaches make is not irrelevant. I love Dabo, but the idea of him making 10M while Trevor Lawrence makes nothing for three years except a phony piece of paper and a place to live is a crock. The cost to Lawrence for amateur status is millions in real dollars and tens of millions in lifetime potential earnings. If this was really about the piece of paper then Ivy, New Ivy, Southern Ivy and Black Ivy would have the best teams in the country. But they don’t, in fact most of those teams are terrible or non-existent. If it was all about the diploma then schools like Alabama, Clemson and SoCal wouldn’t have to pay their coaches 10M a year to convince kids to come to their school.

It is all about a piece of paper, but not a degree. A TV contract!! Track the coaches salaries back to when they exploded and it was guys like Switzer, Spurrier and Bowden that started this thing going out of control. Right when football started becoming a national television pastime. Hire the best recruiters to bring in the best kids to make the best tv product and you don’t even have to pay the talent!

The degree was fine compensation for the effort until the TV contracts came into play, for the last 40 years though, universities across America have been exploiting the players for their own profit. Half of these universities don’t even realize they are doing it, they’ve just been swept into the arms race.

Dec 7, 2021, 7:41 PM

I actually don't sympathize with guys who will make millions in the NFL. The ones who lose the most are guys who perform great in college but either aren't good enough to play in the NFL or they get injured.

Just my 2 cents. From a legal standpoint it doesn't matter.

No one wants to take those things away, it’s just not commensurate to what the university earns from their participation in the football program.

Re: Gimme a break

Dec 7, 2021, 8:25 PM [ in reply to Re: Gimme a break ]

What I’m saying is it’s already corrupted with money. It was corrupted as a purely amateur sport 40 years ago when the conference outgrew the NCAA and started making the massive TV deals. And if we are all going to be okay with giving Dabo duffel bags of money, we better get used to giving players McDonalds bags of money, too.

You know why soccer won’t make the same kind of money. They could, if the product was appealing enough to TV markets but it’s not. Noonan makes $300k, he won’t make in his entire coaching career at Clemson what Dabo will make in his best year.

I’d be fine with a farm league but ultimately that would make both the college football and minor league football worse products, but if that created a system where colleges could be amateur, then fine. But don’t ever expect another player like Lawrence or Big Dex to don orange again. On the other hand, NCAA already has the fans and the viewership, and vaults full of money to pay the dang kids in the process. You’re hand wringing is an empty gesture.

It ain’t ruined for a lot of people, sorry it’s ruined for you.

Amen
If College athletics becomes pro, the only teams that will compete for championships are the huge schools with tons of money. 50K per year to be a lineman at Texas? Horns with heart? Give me a break. This will hurt the kids. Takes the focus off of education. A small number go pro and even then, one injury or you slip a little and then what. The education should hold value. I have to pay for the honor of my son going to school at Clemson. It is an investment in his future. Valuable! College football is big business. I am sure they will figure something out and it will go on, but I am afraid what I use to love about College Football that I couldn't get from Pro is slipping away.
Go Tigers!

Yeah, Mo I agree with your general sentiment here.

My answer is simply the OP’s question is it already has. A few years from now we might look back on this past year (portal usage, first big year of NIL) as when the major symptoms really started to show up but the disease of too much money in college football has been here for years. Head coaches being highest paid employee of their state, facilities arms race; the facade of college football as an amateur (non-pro) sport has been crumbling for years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Arms Race"

Dec 7, 2021, 6:55 PM

is a very appropriate term. It has destroyed CFB as we know it.

Like Dabo said, it'll take a few years to settle down (into whatever). Some of us may leave the sport behind before that happens.

That ball was rolling before Harbaugh and was destined to continue rolling. We aren't at the top. Eventually $15M/year will happen. Just a matter of time. The revenue pie will grow again when the next round of TV deals is completed. Many people believe MLB and NBA TV money may level off or decline next time. NOBODY is saying that about CFB.

"Misplaced priorities"? You are being too kind. This country (and world) will eventually crash over these but it might be a while.

I agree w elements of your post and will go back further. You know that, in the scheme of things, Clemson is not a large school. As proud as I am of the things that relatively small school has accomplished, isn't it really pretty gross that we have a stadium that large? Though USuC is a larger school, they have even less justification. And how long has it been since student-athletes were at most any D1 program for academic enrichment and training? I have enjoyed our many successes and will enjoy those that come but it has been way out of hand for a long time.
