growing up on a farm, driving tractors in the fields in this kind of heat. I do remember we carried about a ten gallon galvanized lined thermos of ice water with us in the farm pickup, and that it would only last until about lunchtime in this kind of heat. You dared not drink TOO much water, or you would "Monkey", as the farm hands would say.

Yep. I grew up on Johns Island in the 60s and 70s. Always working outside. I think my parents got a window unit AC for their bedroom when I was about 13 or 14. Then we got one for the den and finally one for my bedroom probably when I was a junior or senior in high school. We didn’t know any better so it didn’t bother us. I remember when my wife and I were dating I told her I couldn’t sleep unless I was sweating. Boy how times have changed.

my younger brother and I "inherited" their upstairs bedrooms in our NON air conditioned old two story house. It would be so hot in the summertime some nights, I would crawl out my window and sit on the roof of the front porch to cool off. It was a MAJOR blessing when the parents finally got a couple of window A/C units for our bedrooms! Although, you still had to turn those things on around 5 o'clock, if you wanted it to be cool enough to sleep comfortably by 10-11 pm.

fire that rascal up. Flat moved air through the house. We had a window unit in the dining room but only Dad could decide to turn it on. Heck, we were outside sun up to sun down anyway. I don't remember the heat making any difference on that!

Growing up in the upstate in the 60s and 70s we did not have AC. Only had an attic fan until the late 70s when we installed a window unit but mom would only use it during the day on the hottest days. They installed central AC after i left home and also bought a riding lawn mower since i was no longer available to push.

Growing up in the upstate in the 60s and 70s we did not have air conditioning. We had an attic fan until the mid 70's when my brother returned home from Vietnam and bought a window unit for the den.
After I graduated high school and headed-off to Clemson, Mom and Dad had central AC installed. That was about the same time Dad also bought a nice new riding mower.

Exact same thing with me jstone. That attic fan sounded like an airplane engine. Burglars could have emtpied the house and would never have heard them.

Grew up in the 50s and 60s behind the future location of Haywood Mall. No AC just a couple of window fans and always kept the other windows open. Don't recall being very uncomfortable at night but the memories of a 9 - 12 year old child have possibly faded after 65 years. Had a large yard used frequently in mid afternoon ball games without the benefit of anything covering exposed skin. Amazing I haven't had any serious issues after getting so many deep tans over the years. Cooled off many times biking over to Woods lake for several hours.

Summer is my least favorite season because of this kind of heat. I have less energy and just want to stay inside. When I was growing up I hated it also but loved being out of school so summer was bittersweet. We had air units but I remember having the windows open a lot too.

Summer of 1978, working in Columbia where the temp for two weeks went over 100 each day. Radio station said it was down to 99 about the time the sun set. Working for USGS measuring streams. Water kept one cool except for wearing the waders.
