I have a theory that this has been caused, in part, due to societal changes which encourage people to sit on them more.
Has anyone else noticed this trend?

I think it has to do with all the hormones in chicken also. The KFC are never burned during riots.

I have noticed people in general being overweight.
Had a company function a couple of weeks back and seen folks I had not seen in a long time. Weight gain was my big take away with a lot of them.

Part of it is due to laziness, but if you look at athletic girls, they have grown as well. The main reason for that is women began weight training. Until the late 90s, girls didn't lift as much because they thought it would make them bulky (a theory debunked many years ago). Now I see as many women in the gym as men.

help that fat people are now like a protected class or something. You can't say anything without being accused of fat-shaming. They now use more polite terms like "thick" or "curvy". No, you're fat. Ever seen photos of Kim Kardashian's butt that are not photoshopped or digitally altered? Disgusting... 20 pounds of cellulite, and it will only get worse as she gets older...
