Funny story if you want to read....

I was 15 at the time, 31 now. My mom got 3 tickets at last minute notice to the classic 2006 Clemson vs GT game. Me, my mom and her friend went up there from Myrtle Beach. Had a great time until coming home home. On our way home they stopped at a rest stop somewhere between Clemson and myrtle beach. I was asleep in the backseat and they woke me up to see if I needed to use to bathroom, I said no I'm ok. After a few minutes I was thinking, maybe I should go now while we're here so I got up and went. When I got out of the bathroom I noticed our SUV was gone, panicking bc I knew where they parked but I couldn't find the car anywhere. Being 15 at the time , I didn't know what to do so I just sat at one of the picnic tables hoping they would come back. 45 minutes later a state trooper pulls up to where I'm sitting and asks me my name. I told him and he said get in my car, which I did. He said your mom called the police because she didn't see you in the back seat and she's looking for you. Me and the state trooper eventually met my mom at an exit somewhere along the way and when I saw her she was shaking uncontrollable. She thought I was still asleep in the back. Funny story to look back on but man was I scared at the moment

I'm guessing you don't have kids yet?

Cuz you'd really understand how much more scared your mom was!

My ex-wife once left our then-teen-daughter at a gas station because the ex got ticked off at the daughter. I had just dropped the kids off with the ex about 20 minutes earlier. Got a call as I was heading north (we met in central GA, I live in SC) back home from a number I didn't recognize. It was my daughter calling from the cell phone of a restaurant worker (those fast food places that are adjoining to a gas station). She told me her mom and she got in an argument and the mom had dropped her off and left. I turned around and high-tailed it back south to where my daughter said she was. Asked all the employees - all of whom remembered her. Checked in the adjoining convenience store. Had employees check the ladies room. Checked all around the perimeter of the facility. Nothing. I had already called local police who eventually rolled up. Nobody knew where she was. I was, of course, thinking the worst. Not too long later, after getting everyone (including myself!) all worked up, my daughter called me from her mom's phone (I think) and said her mom had come back to pick her up. She'd left her at the gas station (I mean, drove off and hit the interstate - not just drove around for a minute to teach her a lesson) for at least 30-40 minutes (I can't remember). An awful day. One of many reasons I ended up getting custody of my kids a year or two later! But terribly frightening!

Situations like that make the mind go places you'd rather not visit.

our teenage daughter didnt show up for swim practice at 5:30 one morning. Her car was in the lot but not her. Turns out she had come in a different door and wasnt feeling well and no one knew it. That was a very long 30 minutes till we found her.

I once left my son at a gas station as collateral because I left my wallet at home.

He was probably around 12 at the time. Based on how often I hear this story it might have scarred him a little bit.

My dad did that with my brother and I when we were teens

but at a restaurant. Not only had he forgotten his wallet, he had brought the wrong car keys. This was back when you had a door key and an ignition key. The ignition key worked but the door key didn't. My brother and I stayed behind and emptied trash cans while the manager let my dad take the manager's truck back to our house, get the correct keys and his wallet, and come back! This was late 80s. Nobody would do that these days!!

If the kid knew what was going on, I'm sure he was fine. It's when neither the parent or the kid knows what happened that it gets scary!

oh yeah, this was back in the early 90's and I was probably 5 miles from my house.

My son says the guy behind the counter, who was a teenager himself, was probably more afraid that I wasn't coming back than he was.

When I was in hs I drove the family station wagon on a date with 2 other couples. I had a curfew that I always met. This night we were running a little late getting home. I had dropped everyone off and when I got home I realized that I didn't have the key to the house. Well, I certainly didn't want to wake everyone up at this late hour so I crawled behind the third seat and went to sleep. The next thing that I realized was that the car was moving! I sat up in the back and said "Mama"! It scared her so badly that she ran off the road into the ditch. Needless to say I wasn't able to take the car anywhere for some time.

Sounds to me like you just copied an old Robert Barone childhood memory.

fired the cannon. 2nd, when my daughter was in the youth symphony at Furman when she was in the 7th grade...I went to pick her up at the auditorium at Furman. I pulled up to the curb and she opened that back door and when it shut I drove off....I was on the phone with a buyer or maybe a seller and when I hung up I said to my daughter, "Well, how did it go..."........"baby, how did it go......." and I looked in the rearview mirror to see nothing but a French Horn sitting in the back.......She had put the horn in the back and was going to climb in the front with me......Not as bad as the day I left her fall off the bed when she was 6 months old...but, still, not a good look for me as a parent....
