Comedy of errors leads to another loss in a must-win game

Want to beat Florida St. and stop the five-game losing streak to South Carolina? Don't follow the script from Saturday night, when the Tigers committed six turnovers and had critical penalties in keeping South Carolina drives alive. Full Story »

Dec 1, 2013, 7:43 AM

replace Dabo with that's going to change 6 turnovers? None of that is coaching. Well, o.k., I'll put the first turnover on Morris, but other than that, we were in the game through most of the thid quarter, and then proceeded to barf up a couple of more turnovers, not including the lineman jumping offsides on a 4th and 2.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NONE OF THAT IS COACHING?

Dec 1, 2013, 9:38 AM

Are you serious? Do you really believe that? A turn over here and there maybe, but 6? You do realize that this has been the pattern the past 5 years? We have turned the ball over something like 14 times in 5 games vs the Gamecocks, and the coaches have nothing to do with it? Players come and go, but the turnovers remain the same, and coaching has nothing to do with it? Coaches recruit players who can perform in big games, and year after year, ours don't, and the coaches have nothing to do with it?

Most times head coach is a drawing card, The job as head of any group be it AT&T or a local study group is to be able to recruit top leaders for your staff who can get the job done. No, it is not time to clean house, not just yet. However, a deliberate staff member by job description, functions, and his/her role in what makes "US" TIGERS special. Losses to the chicken is in our heads, not playing football. I watched defense play as well as we usually do/did. "We" just can't take a bad call; for example, the poor call of encroachment as 99% of tv folks saw the usc center provoke. This was the first sign of the tigers starting to self doubt. When we self doubt any!!! team can beat any team. I had alot to answer to Sunday, but I wore my most brignt PURPLE tie with that audacious ORANGE PAW smiled, and explained we lost but I am & will forever be a C-L-E-M-S-O-N TIGER!

CU has premiere offensive director is the entire USA, Defensive coordinator's plan has started to show great potential. CU must be doing "something" just watch NFL as you hear players as they call out what college they attended. We must recruit wisely, some top ranked high schools stars just don't fit. With our seniors, running backs, wide receivers, and linemen both defensive and offensive being pro prospects "we" must be doing some things right. This loss dejavuX5 is psychic. We beat the chickens they knew it, we us The Tigers did not believe it. Being a CU top pro prospect in my junior year, at this time after bowl games I would be looking for a ball point pen to sign here on the blank line.

Would be a great hire in my opinion.

I could care less about his affair that cost him his job at Arkansas. We have all made mistakes! They only other knock I could see on him would be how he ran out on Atl in the middle of the night. But didnt Saban do the same at Miami and we would take him in a heartbeat?

Dabo's a great guy and loves Clemson dearly, but he just is not getting it done. If you don't believe me read this:

So now we're going to blame the coach for fumbles and interceptions? Funny, I've looked all through the game stats and don't see Sweeney's name in there anywhere. As bad as I feel this morning, just think how these young men feel - the first to lose 5 in a row to the chickens -in a game where they outplayed them, except for the errors. And think about how much money they make to do this. If they were pros we'd fire them. But they aren't, and they give their all to their (and our) college. It's time to get behind our team, not on them.

I have been a Tiger fan for a few years and remember when I was happy when we were 6 and 5. Games are won or lost on the LOS. Clemson has to improve especially on the OL. Doesn't matter how great of an RB you have if the OL can't open a hole or pull/block with consistency. Doesn't matter how great of a QB you have if he isn't confident in the OL. I think Boyd is a very good QB but not a great one. Great ones to me stay composed even when losing. There have been games where he looks like he is lost. I have often wondered why Chad wouldn't pull him for s series and let him calm down. As for toughness...it has been in 2 games, LSU and GA. As for Dabo has to go...as much as I hate losing to the coots, I rather Dabo stay...I remember the years of Hootie and Red.

Spurrier and his crew remind me TB drop a game to lowly Tennessee but win the rivilary. Just like TB would to Duke or Wake. The coaches had us in place to win last night. Conditioning was there And we are a much stronger team this Year I do see the Improvements. Next years LB core and D line and O line will be much better Training table has help But it will take more than one year to do it. Unless our guys start doing power in the bottle.

Dabo cause all those turn overs?

Please tell if you don't mind.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Players come & go but Dabo loses turnover battle EVERY YEAR!

Dec 1, 2013, 12:51 PM

Turnover battle vs. SCar:
2013: -6
2012: -1
2011: -1
2010: -3
2009: -1

Since Dabo took over in 2009, Spurrier's teams out-physical Clemson even though Clemson has an edge on recruited talent.

Is it all luck just bad luck or bad coaching? I love the double standard whereby when Clemson wins the Dabo-lovers praise Dabo, and when Clemson loses they blame the players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

USuc but had 6 turnovers and didn't get any back. We're not going to beat a Div II with 6 turnovers. We had a great chance to win in the 4th quarter unlike the 3-4 previous coot games. There's nothing soft about that!

Hello everyone,Clemson has a great coach! He was not the one out there dropping the ball or throwing it to the chickens! He did his job, the players are the ones that had the bad game, not Dabo! The team has to play better in big games, the coaches had the Tigers in position to win.

When do you stop spitting out spoiled milk and grabbing a new jug? The fridge is broke. The system builds pride, attitudes, and a MUST win attitude. This is coaching. You take a good young man and make him great. This coaching staff ruins all they get. Watkins, spiller at a FSU, Alabama would have won the Heisman!

Re: Quarter BAck??

Dec 1, 2013, 8:18 AM

I think Tajh coming back this year gave us the best cance for a good season..... IFF he played up to his potential, but only played well in Ga game . If SC gave up the ball to us 6 times I think we could have won. Outplayed more than out coached in my opinion. Can't fumble that any times in our On my way! territory and expect different results.

Dec 1, 2013, 8:36 AM

I really don't agree with saying we need a new coach. I think it is as hard on me and my family to loose to Carolina as the next tiger fan but wanting a new coach is unthinkable at this point. Dabo has done a lot of good things for our university and players. It can't come down to just two schools he has trouble with. I can't help but think back to Tommy Bowden when we played Alabama in the Georgia dome, we got down and the camara showed him on sideline kneeling down away from everyone not even having a fight in him. Understand the frustrations but Dabo still is a top notch coach and man. I believe fully that our day is coming real soon with him.

While the actual fumbles and penalties may not fall on the coaches, preparing the team to play is the coaches responsibility. That preparation also involves mentally preparing them to play. That many mistakes in in turnovers and critical penalties falls on a lack of discipline and mental preparation. That does fall on the coaches.

I don't think it is time to get rid of Dabo, I remember the dumpster fire the Tigers were under West and the mediocrity under Bowden when the term "Clemsoning" was born but I do think it is time for him to stop trying to be their best friend and start being more their coach. It is also time for him to get it through his head (and the rest of the staff as well) that they have to spend more time recruiting top level trench players.

ARE YALL F#&$ING KIDDING ME

Dec 1, 2013, 9:29 AM

Coaching has nothing to do with turnovers? Maybe you either daft or havn't played sports in your life...likely both. Coaching has everything to do with poor ball security. The coaches are 100% to blame for not being able to tackle, stop the draw time and time again. Getting away from the run early and often and ball security. All of the above. Great programs don't turn the ball over. Period. Argue that fact if you wld like but it will just make you look stupid.

How could they have coached Adam to catch the punt?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disappointed, but not in Dabo

Dec 1, 2013, 10:21 AM

The job of a head coach is to lead the team. Dabo is a great leader and Clemson football has improved every year he has been our head coach. My observations...
1)Chad, S.Watkins is not a QB

2)Boyd sacked 5 times...Clemson recruiting needs to elevate OL as a priority.

3)This game was Boyd vs. Shaw. I thought that Boyd had arrived when he beat LSU last year despite losing Watkins on first drive and playing catch up. As much as I love Boyd, he got rattled against FSU and USC. Shaw has had some bad games, but I've never seen him rattled.

4)I thought that CU defense played good enough to win. Pass coverage was pretty good; Shaw just put ball where only his receivers could catch it.

5)Rod McDowell played great!

6)Thought Chad called a good game except for the Watkins pass play.

7)I think that USC has more athletic talent at every position except for our WRs, DL, DE, and LBs. USC has a great OL.

8)Despite this very disappointing loss, Clemson football continues to move in the right direction. I'M ALL IN!!!

Clemson annually has more player talent. SCar has better HC

Dec 1, 2013, 1:01 PM

Here are the 2-deep recruited talent comparisons for the last few years. Clemson has had a recruited talent advantage over SCar. Obviously SCar's coaching is superior if they can beat us 5-straight with less talent.

Re: Clemson annually has more player talent. SCar has better HC

Dec 1, 2013, 7:59 PM

Usuing your data, CU starting O-line (total stars) and starting RB has fewer stars than their starting USC counterparts. CU starting defensive backs (CB & S) have more stars than their starting USC counterparts. Having said that,

1) the difference in CU and USC recruiting stars is negligible, and

2) stars assigned to high school kids, particularly O-linemen, don't mean squat. If Alabama shows interest in an unknown HS player early in the recruiting process, he'll get a 3 star rating overnight. How many 5 stars end up never make it past their sophmore season...more than most would expect.

D-backs are much improved over last year. Maybe Dabo needs a new O-line coach. Give D-back coach a little more time.

Dec 1, 2013, 10:49 AM

Since when does a Head coach actually coach? They're CEO's with Assistant Coaches actually coaching. Dabo has shaped a program, built a future and has hired some good to great Assistants. What happened yesterday wasn't because of coaches, it was because of players and when they can take responsibility for their failures the fan base and our future teams will be better served

Malzahn, Spurrier, Jimbo F., definitely coach their offenses. Richt was the OC at FSU so he knows what he wants Bobo to do. Saban runs his defense. Most all BCS HC's paid their dues as a coordinator before taking over their program. Dabo may be the exception.

Momentum was changing big time in the third quarter and you could see it in the gamecocks players eyes and their coaches eyes. We had the game right were we wanted it and spit the bit and imploded from that point. Gotta give some credit to SC for not making the costly mistakes from that point on in the game that we unfortunately made. The last 3 years SC whipped us up front on both lines but, that didn't happen this year. The only difference this year is that we gift wrapped and handed the game to them on a silver platter. Coaching has a lot to do with that and that is the only difference in the two teams at this point in my opinion.

Play high school football against good teams. Get high play...a loss. Out coached and out played by Florida State and Carolina. mediocre play nets mediocre results. I remember a GREAT quarterback who played for Clemson. He did not break records. He id not pass for 1000's of yards and 100's of touchdowns. Her led Clemson to the promised land...a national title.
