From the softer side of Tigerdon81.

I’m no Cata, Cobb, or even a Sterling for that matter, but I have felt compelled to write something about my freshman year here at Clemson. Bear with me if its not very good.
My senior year in high school I was accepted to both Furman and Clemson. Through various scholarships and grants, I had a free ride at both schools. I’m from Greenville, and the idea of going to Furman and still being close to my family, my girlfriend, and my friends still in high school was pretty cool. I was heavily leaning on going to Furman.
Then one day I went on the tour at Clemson. I changed my mind that day. I’m very glad I did.
I remember move-in day. Thousands of kids and their parents running around, lugging furniture up and down stairs, in and out of elevators, and through narrow halls. I remember my parents and my girlfriend sitting in my room after we were finished, just looking at each other. A somewhat awkward silence fell over the room.
“Well...I guess we better get going.”
They left... the door closed. My roommate had not yet arrived. There I was, barely out of high school, for the first time...on my own. It’s a weird feeling. I’m sure all of you have gone through it... that moment the parents leave and you realize “Wow...this is it. It is on me, now.”
A lot has changed since that day. My major has changed. My opinions have changed, politically, religiously, morally. In all honesty, its been a hard year.
My grandfather died during exam week last semester. My grades dropped. In actuality, this year wasn’t what I had dreamt it would be. But I still fell in love with this school. There is just nothing like..
One dollar movies at the Astro. Walking on sunny Bowman field on a spring day. Hearing the chimes of Tillman Hall while you walk to class. Stopping next to the reflection pool to admire the view. Swimming in said reflection pool. Beer and pizza and Monday night football. Fall Saturdays with 80,000 of your closest friends.
There is nothing like...
Falling asleep in the amphitheatre when the weather is JUST RIGHT. Pulling all nighters in the first floor of the library. That feeling of accomplishment you get walking across campus from Brackett at 5:00 AM after finally finishing that 12 page term paper. Dorm pranks. Drinking games. Basketball at Fike. Losing on a last second Hail Mary in the intramural flag football play-offs, then laughing about it. Kissing your sweetheart after a Clemson football win.
There is nothing like....
Schilleter, Harcombe, and Clemson House. Buying Blue Books. Wanting to rip apart said Blue Books. Ordering Papa John’s late at night. Afternoon naps after your last class. Midnight movies in friends’ dorm rooms. Skipping an afternoon class to go to Tiger Field. Getting close to the people who live on your hall. Just being a Tiger fan.
There is just nothing like Clemson.
If my next three years are anything like the first one...
I’ll be blessed. This is a special place.

Uh... I go to Anderson College. It isn't Clemson. It is ok. I don't take walks. They have no football team. Most fun is derived from LEAVING campus.
So... yeah... it must be nice to love a college like that. lol

I remember that awkward freshman year...

My first day on campus, I was actually overwhelmed with excitement (mostly over the freedom).
But like you, I went through that transformation with beliefs, mental maturity, friends, relationships, etc.
I suffered in grades and wrestled with what I wanted to do with my life. That freshman year was one of the rockiest of my life. But I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Nice post.

make it four more years!
It is amazing how you can be homesick for a college.
I hate these posts, and love them at the same time.
Enjoy it!

where once you experience it, you always want to go back.
it never leaves you and you wish it for your children.
what a great place to postpone reality and learn a few things along the way.
great post !
