Id like to recognize the contributions made by Frank Howard to Clemson

Basketball. Clemson basketball has not always been as popular as it is now. Many fans credit the surge in the sport’s popularity to Ellis, Barnes, OP, CBB, or recent renovations, new facilities, etc…, but it was AD Howard who built the foundation. In 1966 Athletic Director Howard broke ground on a state of the art facility, Littlejohn Coliseum, at a cost of $72,300,000.00 in today’s dollars. This investment, while much larger than any previously made in football at the time, and probably not very popular, created the momentum needed to get us where we are today. As we look back on our success, let’s take a moment to remember Frank Howard, and what he did for all Clemson sports, not just football. His vision is the main reason I consider him the father of Clemson Basketball.
Thank you Coach Howard, and go get em CBB!

So you are saying “Frank built it and Danny filled it” also applies to basketball?
I can see that…

Great post!
Overall, Frank Howard served as: - Clemson Football Head Coach 1940-1969 - Clemson Baseball Head Coach 1943 - Clemson Track and Field Head Coach 1931-1939 - Clemson Athletic Director 1940-1971
Regarding football, as Sports Illustrated put it:
“If you were building a Mount Rushmore of football coaches at Clemson, Dabo Swinney and Danny Ford would most certainly be posing for portraits.
But the first face that would don that mountain would be Frank Howard. Even while Swinney and Ford have led the Tigers to national championships, the field on which they coach is named for Howard along with the emblem of football tradition, "Howard's Rock."
Howard started his Clemson career in 1931 as a line coach under Jess Neely. Neely left for Rice in 1940, and the story goes that Clemson Athletic Council Sam Rhodes nominated Howard to be the next coach. Howard, who was standing in the back of the room said "I second the nomination," and the Tigers had their new head coach.”

During most of Coach Howard's Clemson was smaller than current day Citadel and we had a purpose closer to that of the Citadel and VMI than most schools. Howard made Clemson into the best program in the ACC, took his Tigers to the Orange, Sugar, Gator and several smaller bowls. His tenure saw Clemson win more games than FSU, GT, Florida,Miami and countless other 'big name' teams. Very often Howard's team played 6 games on the road and our home games were played in front of 20,000 or fewer fans.
It is essentially impossible for modern day Clemson fans to understand how great a coach, leader and wonderful Coach Clemson had in Frank Howard. Howard retired in 1969 when I was a sophmore. I will be 75 shortly.
Coach Howard had a great and self depreciating sense of humor. He won several ACC Championships in his last 10 year but proclaimed, "I quit coaching on account of health reasons. I was making the alumni sick."
I love Danny Ford, but Coach Howard created the Clemson program that most of us have enjoyed our whole lives. I think he deserves no worse than second billing among Clemson football Coaches.

I am 64 and grew up during the tailend of Frank Howard's career. Often wondered why he over scheduled many years. In the late 60s his teams would play, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, often 3 out of those 4. Guess he did it for money but it definitely hurt his overall record. Good Post !

We're the same age. Ain't no way coaches today would dare say some of the Howard quotes. Danny came kinda close. He was the best. Those really were the days. Thanks for all that shared.

This brought tears to my eyes. I for one won't watch another Clemson BB game until an honorary jersey with Coach Howards name on it is hung from the rafters in Littlejohn.

As Cliff Elis told Mark Packer a couple of weeks ago on ACC PM:
Frank Howard told Coach Ellis after being hired when he was going to his office for the first day
"Cliff, I heard y'all had a 7 foot commit from China."
Ellis asked Howard "Who is he? What's his name?"
Howard answered "Wynn Some Soon"

Great investment. Especially since it happened so quickly. Thank God the investments in football paid dividends as fast as they did or I wouldn’t have lived to see the second and third Natty.
It’s still TBD if CBB has indeed made the step to elite. Final four this year and regular elite 8’s with a Natty banner or it’s all for not. Two good season out of 23 doesn’t mean he’s arrived. Remember, he’s only finished the year ranked twice in 23 seasons. Let’s see it consistently before we start crowning him King.

FM - Great post, although might I suggest we give some love to the man who really started it all.... Walter Merrit Riggs. He was not only the "father of Clemson football" by bringing the fledging sport to campus but was the president of Clemson College from 1910-1924. That move alone changed the trajectory of the school
He was the President when we brought basketball to the school in 1912 and brought us into the SoCon in 1921 and really got the program rolling.

wheel tractor trailer because more money could be made renting it out for concerts and Monster Truck Events. It sits empty 330 days out of the year, which tells me that the last round of improvements diminished its value. I think the Annex needs to be removed so we can book Taylor Swift and make real money.

Frank Howard was a man of unparalleled vision. But let's not forget Coach Swinney, whose direct and indirect contributions to the basketball program must not be understated.

Here's how to reverse it in five easy steps:
1) Acknowledge that it's not the thought, opinion, or posit you hate ... 2) but that it's FM you hate and 3) are probably a little envious of. Which means you should 4) reevaluate your initial response in light of items 1-3, and 5) walk in your newfound freedom to openly agree that Clemson basketball is what it is today because of Frank Howard's vision. And Danny Ford's natty. And Dabo Swinney's natties. And Brad Brownell's dogged determination to win just enough in years 1-14 to see the day come in year 15 when the ACC is finally ripe for a Clemson title.
