but looking at his youtube channel he seems to have a pretty large following (1.27 million subscribers). I have no idea how much being a youtube prankster pays however.
Like I said, I just don't get it.

He is just having fun and embarrassing someone who deserves some shame. We all spend money on what others would see as a waste. Blowing 2k might be nothing to him.

He explains why he did it at the end of the article. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
“The truth is, there’s an awful lot of hate in the world, and people like Katie Hopkins spread that hate and make money from it,” Pieters said.
“And she can do that, because she has freedom of speech. But, so do I. So I used it to combat her spreading of hatred by playing on her ego and making her look a little bit silly.”

She called 16 yr. old Greta Thunberg an "Autistic fu**ing Wench". Even if Thunberg is being used by others, as has been argued, to fight climate change, she's still a 17 yr old girl with Aspergers Syndrom.
In her acceptance speech Katie Hopkins said, among other rancid things, “If you call Mohammad in a school playground, 2,000 ####### kids come running and you don’t want any of them,” and “Epileptics are all weirdos. They’re up there with the Asians.”
Hopkins can also be heard repeatedly saying that Muslims are “###### their own mother” and she also mocks Arabic names, calling them “retards.” Hopkins can also be heard referring to 17-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg as an “autistic ####### wench.”
Glad he had the money to embarrass her.

The guy insulted and humiliated a nasty bitter old woman.

Two wrongs don't make a right and I'm absolutely not taking side in a argument where all the players from the people who put the 17yr old out front to the guy who got involved with the trashy old woman.
They are all miserable people and their misery is punishment enough. They don't need me to contribute and I refuse to submit myself to such misery. Imo, there is no right side of this.

And they put the guy that exposed this woman in the same category with her. Eerily similar logic to Trump saying there were good people on both sides in Charlottesville. For some reason they get awful defensive of these white nationalists....

Did you see the sign behind that guy? How could anyone claim moral superiority over anyone while standing in front of that masterpiece?
Trump's comment in context were not praise for white nationalist. Many of the people, those who he was talking about at Charlottesville did not want to see southern heritage destroyed are not white nationalist.
Many million of southerners who feel our heritage is worthy of preservation are not racist or white nationalist. Just because a few radicals jacked our flag does not make everyone who still respects the Stars and Bars radicals.

I guess the thought of anyone spending a penny on her

was ludicrous enough that an explanation of my opinion on the things she says wouldn't be required. I never mentioned her espoused ideals because it simply wasn't necessary. I don't point out that water is wet, or sunshine is bright, either. I'm not sure the things she says even need to be disparaged. Some things are self evident.
That is, unless someone like you takes the immediate low road as an invitation to infer that, and then I guess it has to be clarified.

Rein in the butthurt (at least I didn't make fun of your accent). Just seems odd that you would focus on this part of the story.
I dunno. Spending money to publicly shame a right wing racist extremist is kinda fun. But not how I'd spend my money.
