First time visitor from London

Hi,
We're visiting Clemson for the Pitt game in November and we're looking for some advice.
How would we best enjoy the tailgating scene? We won't be able to host any kind of party ourselves between our hotel and rental car. Can we enjoy much just by walking around the parking lots? We've never really seen a proper tailgate party before so don't know what to expect!
We're only in town for Friday to Sunday. Would you suggest hitting the local bars on Friday night or trying to get tickets for the basketball? (We're a couple in our early-30s if that makes any difference!)
Thanks and Go Tigers!

All of what you said will work. I would just walk around and talk with people. You will be invited to participate in a tailgate I'm sure

Go to the basketball game the night before. Littlejohn Coliseum has been upgraded and should be a great experience.
As for the football game, you definitely need to experience tailgating at Clemson. You will find that if you approach Clemson people at a tailgate and simply introduce yourselves in a friendly manner, you will be welcomed with open arms. You will not leave hungry and you will likely be offered adult beverages, although that's not necessary to have a good time. I advise you to stay sober and enjoy it with all your faculties intact. The camaraderie and fellowship are worth remembering. Then you get to see the greatest American football experience and one of the nation's best teams hand Pitt a thrashing. What could be better than that?

Thanks to everyone for all the great replies, we feel very welcomed already. I've been reading about last Saturday (as well as watching the game broadcast on ESPN UK and we even watched College Gameday), and if it's half as good as that then we'll be very happy.

You don't believe someone would visit from London? Not many would, but not many know of the amazing sights and sounds of college football! And where else better than Death Valley?!

According to Google, it is 3,713 miles from London to Pittsburgh. However we will be flying from London Heathrow to Washington DC, where we will stay for a few days before flying from Baltimore to Atlanta. I believe it will then be a drive of around 135 miles.
Looking forward to it!

Haha H8nusc thanks for the advice. We do have The Wire over here. We won't be making a self guided photography tour of the row houses, we will be staying in a hotel near the harbour for the Thursday Night Ravens game.
And I'm glad to hear that Death Valley is nothing like The Lane or The Bridge. Horrible places

I don't want to be alarmist, but you'll still need to be aware if your surroundings in the harbour Watersides area. Bad things happen there too, albeit much less frequently than most other areas of Baltimore.

Death Valley ain't the Emirates or White Hart Lane or Stamford Bridge, but it'll do. Don't expect singing (other than the national anthem and alms mater) but do expect lots of noise.
No hooligans either. Very family friendly.
You must hit the local bars, just don't expect good beer like you have in London Town. The two essentials are the Esso Club and Tiger Town Tavern. TDs and the Sloan Steet Tap Room are good too. Sloan Street has classic Clemson memorabilia on the walls. As does the Esso Club, but I've always been a Sloan Street man. It is run by the son of our legendary coach Frank Howard. Check them out on Facebook.
For food, try barbecue and boiled peanuts. Smoking Pig is the bbq of choice.
Enjoy!

Give the Brit a break. He sounds legit to me.
CU is famous worldwide now and there are American college football fans everywhere in the world who travel and would like to experience the best of what there is to offer..... just as if you went to Spain, you might want to see a bullfight or in the UK, see a game of cricket on the pitch.
Remember the Aussie couple who came to a game last year after following the Tigers for years on American TV? It was at the top of their bucket list.
I have a friend who lives in San Diego, played football at Michigan State and comes to Clemson games 2 or 3 times a year because when I introduced him to the team, he liked what he saw and adopted them as his own - last year he was at ND, FSU and UsuC games. Last week he was at the UL game with me and will be at the USuC game in November. He goes to Europe with his wife about 6 times a year just to go to Ireland for St Patrick's week and to Scotland for the military tattoo festival at Edinborough Castle. Last year in Edinborough, his favorite band (and the Scottish favorite) was The Citadel - they put on a terrific show. He left today for Brussels to attend some festival.
There are so many people who are watching us - be aware of it and embrace it. It wasn't always this way, but with the world shrinking as it is, it's good to be a part of something people want to see for themselves - so make them feel at home..... perhaps someday they'll do the same for you.

Do you understand American college football? Do you know when to yell, "Pass interference!" "That was HOLDING!" "Great run, Wayne Train!" "What a catch by Ray Ray"!
If not, we can set up a short training class before the game. Want to make sure you get the maximum benefit from your investment.

That should be an awesome icebreaker right there. I can imagine a good tailgate party not wanting you guys to hang with them. If you can meet some folks on here that would be awesome to. I myself would like to go to that game, but with my work schedule right now I don't know if it's possible. Pitt beat Clemson 34-3 and I'm still looking for revenge. OK that was like 40 years ago, but still.

Yes, we visited family in Austin last October. I've followed NFL on-and-off for a few years, but when I heard about college football stadiums, the largest sports stadiums in the world, filled with 80, 90, 100 thousand fanatics, in the words of Buzz Bissinger... I knew I had to go there.
We went to see the Longhorns host Kansas State. The game was played in a horrible rainstorm in front of a severely depleted crowd, we were soaked to the skin... and we loved it. The bands, the traditions, the camaraderie amongst the fans, everything about the experience was great. So this year we wanted to visit another bucket list stadium.
I followed the latter stages of the CFP last season and was rooting for Clemson throughout. I researched a lot online and when I saw a youtube video of the players loading into busses to emerge at the other side of the stadium, touch the rock and run down the hill...
I knew I had to go there.

is bigger than Clemson's and Austin is of course an awesome and cooler city. However the Longhorns are going through some rough years lately so the fans are not as amped up or as passionate right now as they usually are. Death valley is a mot more intense these days on gameday

You're coming to CU the best time of year, Saxon friends. Not as pretty color this year as it has been drier than usual. but it should be nice this weekend. Please don't be offended if someone asks you to talk: us Southerners get that done to us wherever we go. If you are getting a rental car you might take a trek to the mountains to the north, the Eastatoe Valley and Rocky Bottom. But then if you has as much trouble adjusting to the "wrong' side of the road as I did the last time I tried to drive in the UK, you might forego the mountain roads.
There're good tailgates by the library at the selection pool too. Enjoy!

Hello, opening poster here again! Only a week and a half to go until we see the UNDEFEATED Tigers take on Pitt (yeah I'm counting on the Oranges being pulped before then)
Thanks for all your welcoming words. We'd love to come and meet some of you and tailgate! Let us know where and when we need to go!
We also have basketball tickets so we're looking forward to that.
The Tiger Band pre-game concert sounds fun, are there any other gameday traditions or activities we should check out? Of course we will be in the stadium for THE HILL! Tiger Walk sounds fun, but it depends what time it is. We won't be waiting for hours to get a decent spot so there might be more fun things to see and do.
Thanks!

I've found over the years that you can introduce yourself just like you did and probably be able to get along with a group outside of the stands- if you're looking for a group to go in with. Clemson fans are hospitable, loyal to their Team & Tailgating at Clemson has been welcoming atmosphere for decades. 8-0. Welcome

I second the trip up into our mountains(Highlands, Cashiers areas) just about 1 hour north of campus. Friday would be a good day for that as the game will consume most of Saturday. Also several posters have offered to have you meet them at their talegate and giving them a tmail will set that up. I would suggest meeting up with several of them if you can. Anyway, safe travels and hope you have a great Tiger weekend. Please keep us informed and keep asking for advice if needed...Jaybird4

Hi,
Me again, looking for some help please: is it easy to find unreserved parking for the Friday night basketball and on the Saturday? We will be arriving early afternoon to have plenty of time on campus ahead of the football game. Or should I book into one of the lots?
Thanks!

Regarding my parking question: we're staying at the Holiday Inn and have a rental car. If we can easily get around without the car we're happy to do that too.

Flight day tomorrow! First stop Washington DC. Not sure if there's much going on in the United States tomorrow (!) but we'll see you in Clemson country on Friday.

BTW: We call the game "FOOTBALL" here, and what you call "football" is called "Soccer" here, so don't get confused with that. Enjoy the game (s).
WEAR ORANGE if possible. We like that color.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Couldn't make it down from NH so please cheer a little harder to make up for my absence. Go Tigers!
