New Story: Why the gut-wrenching loss? Because prosperity is a terrible teacher

Why the gut-wrenching loss? Because prosperity is a terrible teacher

Prosperity is a terrible teacher, and there are critical lessons Clemson hasn't learned because they kept winning. Now, the Tigers have a deflating and often humiliating game tape to watch. How they respond will define the season. Full Story »

Few disagreements David

First, going for one yard with two plays to ice the game is what elite, championship teams do. And make it.

But let's be clear, Dabo lost this game by calling a pass play at the goal line. You run two more running plays directly in the middle of the field. If you score, game over. If you don't, you kick a 20 FG and make Pitt score 11 points in 4minutes. That's what elite HCs do.

Dabo has done a tremendous job at Clemson but I sure hope he grows from this as I pin this loss on his poor game management.

Let's just win out, go to a nice bowl game and look to the future.

Agreed Dabo needs to look in the mirror and learn as well. Not just the players.

Great points. If we win out we are going to the CFP and not just a nice bowl though. ;)

I thought Deshawn did that. Didn't know Dabo called it. I thought they trusted Deshawn in goal line decisions

Look we scored over 40 pts. Not too much to complain about on offense other than finding a way to gain a yard. Not sure if we can improve on Defense but our guys need to start studying the offense and not staring at BV right before the ball is snapped. A lot of times this is when someone gets lost and not covered. I read a preseason mag this summer that said you can get a cheap play off Clemson b/c the def. signals come in too late.

Whoever called a pass play near the goal line with just a few minutes to go is the one to blame for this loss. Its like the coaches do not understand mathmatics. Going for a touchdown or settling for a fieldgoal is the differnce between going up by 11 or up by 15. Either way it would take two touchdowns for the other team to win the football game and that assumes Clemson does something stupid between the two touchdowns (or it would take a touchdown, 2 point conversion and a fieldgoal).

Lets assume Clemson missed the field goal; you are still up by 8 and they have to go a long way to get a touchdown. Worst case, you are tied at the end of the game if they score.

Sometimes, it seems these coaches have no clue how the clock can be your friend once you are up by more than 3 points.

Don't mind the 3&1 and 4&1 calls - should have been

Nov 13, 2016, 10:05 AM

To get that with our players and win the game right there - not so thrilled w/ the actual play called though. The defense was a hot mess. Still, win @ Wake, stomp the dirt peckers, win in Orlando and things are pretty bright.

Pitt is a LOT better team then their record indicated

Nov 13, 2016, 10:40 AM

"Bad Loss" ??? Did you know Pitt beat Penn State ? As one of the Clemson players stated, "those dudes were strong" !!!

This loss was a wake up call as we all know. Actually, I was actually looking forward to the WF game, because WF is a GOOD team. You cannot take any team in the ACC for granted. There is a LOT more parity among the teams, and pretty much anybody can beat anybody else on any given Saturday (or Friday or Thursday).

Excellent article DAVID. Those of us who brought up many of these same points earlier in the season were burned in effigy by the safe spacer footballers. I trust we will respond by winning against Wake and the dirtpeeckers, even though they have a new all world qb. Go Tigers!!

Both BCS Champions had a regular season loss

Nov 13, 2016, 12:14 PM

2014 Ohio State had an embarrassing early loss to a bad Virginia Tech team. By the end of the season, they pummelled Wisconsin to get in as a #4 seed, then shocked Alabama and Oregon to win it all.

2015 Alabama turned the ball over 6 times while losing to Ole Miss at home. You think Nick Saban was happy about that? We all know how that season ended.

By contrast, 2014 Florida State hadn't lost a game in 2 years when they entered the playoffs, but survived several close calls, especially the Clemson game. They went home early. 2014 Alabama was also unbeaten and was upset by Ohio State.

We finally got the loss that NC State should have given us against Pitt. I hope it serves as a wakeup call. At this point, this is who we are: Deshaun is not invincible, Gallman's talent can't make up for a garbage running game, and our incredible d-line can't cover for a mediocre secondary forever. We've just got to deal with it.

The good news is that everybody else has weaknesses too. Nobody in the B1G plays offense. Nobody in the Big XII plays defense. Washington was unimpressive. Louisville is inconsistent. Alabama has not been tested on both sides of the ball, but was lit up by Ole Miss and shut down by LSU. They are beatable.

We've got plenty of talent and more heart than anyone. Our problem is that sometimes we play with more heart than head. Even on our worst plays, DW gave his all trying to run down the fumble return that was called back and MW kept an INT from becoming a 100 yard Pick-6. We're not done yet. Far from it.

Sure, this defeat stings as any defeat would. Keep in mind though, in 2015 Alabama lost at home to Ole Miss and won the Championship. The year before that it was Ohio State falling to Virginia Tech and then winning the Championship. Both losses were at home.

I feel that this loss came at the best possible time as any loss could to help them reflect on where they are and where they want to go.

I'm also not wanting to detract from the Pitt Football team either. They came into our house and won the game. It wasn't pretty but they did it. They are to be commended on their efforts last night.

The tigers need to internalize this loss. Take it for what it is (no more/no less) Learn from it. Get back off the ground and be better, be stronger. If I were the next team this program faces, I would be truly afraid. This loss will make them hungry for the next win. I feel you will see some exciting stuff in the coming two weeks from this group of talented folks.

God Bless.

BEST IS THE STANDARD.
Ever and always, Go Tigers!!!

We will respond like champions!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a good loss to get out the way and prepare ourselves for the final stretch run to the playoffs. Go Tigers!!!

As much as I hate to be a Debbie Downer and would like to be optimistic, I don't think the problems we've been seeing can be corrected in 3 weeks. I don't know if it's coaching, or players not focused enough, but those problems are problems that are fixed in an offseason.

The lowest I've seen us projected to drop is to #4...we win out we're in, period.

Let's hope we needed yesterday's loss to get a new fire under our ##### for the stretch run!

Turnovers are still the great equalizer. We continue to have them. DW is not ready for them NFL. I think MW and JL are the only 2 ready for the next level. JG missed key block on 4th and 1. BB is excellent on the run, but a liability in pass coverage. Just does not have the necessary speed. Is DW's shoulder an issue in him not running? Lose = time to address the tough issues and calling people out. No longer hide behind close wins.

Was Hyatt hurt last night? I know Jake was out but it seemed like Pollard and Anchrum (a few FR) played the entire night at LT and RT. And what about the state of Pagano, saw him leave in first half on crutches.

Prosperity is only a terrible teacher for idiots

Nov 13, 2016, 2:27 PM

Are our coaches too stupid to see what we as fans see, that many times we get by with our superior talent in spite of the coaching staff's incompetence? I am not saying that winning every game is easy, but I am saying that I expect A WHOLE LOT for the kind of $$$ that our staff is paid. They make many times the salary that people with really good jobs in the rest of society make, and we should expect a lot from them because of it. I know that they are out there in front of all to see, but making good decisions should not be all that hard since that's what they do for a living. The film is there to review, and they should learn from the close wins as well as the losses.

CaptainB1-
First loss in over 2 years of regular season games = High salaried staff = They deserve it.
I think we can give them a mulligan on this one.
