He could let BV get flagged all the time.

Kinda lame by BV. They need a foam mat out there and next time he tries that Smotherman needs to suplex him...lightly.

Geez that looks pretty bad. I didn't like seeing BV slap at him tonight either. No other coaches have a "get back" coach to my knowledge. If BV didn't break the rules, we would not have to supply him with one, either. He should be thankful.

Uhhhhhh let's chill. We have the best defensive coach in the land. They're obviously friends and it's quite obvious that BV needs a dude like that to keep him from the field. You can keep complaining about etiquette, but I'll take the championships with the occasional flare up.

Yeah, when BV gets into this mode you can tell that he's not thinking about staying on the sideline. I'm totally okay with him getting this way, it lights a fire under the *** of the defense. Having a defensive coordinator this charismatic is an asset, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the "get back coach" knows what he's getting into when he reaches out to grab BV. I'm sure they spoke about it after the game, and if it there was a serious issue, we'd probably know about it. I'm not saying BV is happy having someone stand behind him the whole game to grab him, but I'm sure that Dabo set this whole arrangement up. It's not like it's the first year of them implementing this either. It's been a common sight on our sidelines for the past few years, and there are a few programs copying it.

BV is not the only one with a "get back" guy - I have seen several other teams that have a "get back" guy for their passionate coordinators...

Get over it nancies. Smotherman is a grown ### man and I’m pretty sure he’s not as sensitive as you guys. If we need 3 get-back coaches to help with Venables, then I say do it. Dude is worth gold to our program.

I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

When I saw the title I thought that somehow the get-back coach had stepped too close and BV had to pull him back.

If you slow it down you see Vevables is smiling after he slapped that hand. The man is definitely loving his job.

Intense as expected

Oct 1, 2017, 9:25 AM

It's all cool. Our defense is intense because DC coach Venables is intense. (If it were not so then we would have to start worrying.)

Please tell me GBC has an autograph table at the fan fests

Oct 1, 2017, 12:43 PM

He's becoming such a celebrity he needs to enjoy some fame and fans need to get to meet him. I'd almost turn down a chance to meet Dabo in order to meet the GBC.

After that, I was expecting to see him wrap his arm around BV and pick him up, like a toddler, with feet kicking.
GO TIGERS!!!

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The way I see it, Coach Smotherman...

Oct 2, 2017, 9:58 AM

...can't win! He does his job and gets slapped. He doesn't do his job and gets blamed if there's a penalty. On the other hand, as a outside observer, it was quite funny! (probably not to Coach S. though!) I read one time, referees seek out the "get-back guy" before the game to make sure he knows his responsibilities.

Best part is the "I will break you little man" look after***

Whats interesting about BV

Oct 3, 2017, 1:47 PM

is that he is not this intense or crazy in his day-to-day persona.

When I was a student at Clemson I worked at the Jimmy Johns downtown. The coaches came in frequently, but BV came in every. single. day. at lunch time. Always ordered the veggie club, easy on the cheese and mayo with extra avocado. This was also when my shifts were assigned so I always took his order.

First, his voice is perpetually hoarse. But if you didnt know who he was, you would think he's the biggest wuss on the planet. Outside of football, he projects a persona of a very very very quiet, shy, and timid person. He speaks to most regular people as if every word he says is scary and says "please" after everything. You'd think the guy had made a career out of being a Sunday church nursery maid. It was almost bizarre. But, I think he understands his reputation as the violent mad scientist of CFB defensive coordinators and intentionally projects an overly soft and gentle persona when he is in public, whether that is to give himself a low profile or not let his presence intimidate people is my guess.

But if you met him on a street, or a restaurant, without any knowledge of who he is or what he does, you would think he is the most timid person you've ever met. It made me chuckle. His son is the same way, both extremely nice, gentle people with smiles on their faces all the time, until they step onto a football field.

Mitch Hyatt is like that too. I worked at '55 Exchange in college and when Mitch first got to campus he'd come in and get shakes with his girlfriend and if there were people in the store you couldn't hear him from 3 feet away. 6'5" 300 lbs and super soft spoken. Very different for someone who is a mauler on the football field.
