Swinney says placekicking spot is open

I think it should say

Oct 16, 2017, 12:03 PM

"Placekicking options are open" meaning become more reliable in kicking or just go for it. As many know placekicking is not a spot college teams build depth. Scholarships simply aren't used that way. We do not have the ability like the NFL to go sign a proven kicker, it sort of is what it is.

We have had open tryouts before... some soccer players have won the job in the past....

Isn't that how Donald Igwebuike got the job back in the day?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but statistically speaking

Oct 16, 2017, 12:20 PM

we have had two good kickers come from the Soccer team in the last 36 years. It can be done but not likely. It's not a seamless transition. Also to note, back then they kicked off of a tee.

Re: Yes, but statistically speaking

Oct 16, 2017, 12:31 PM

Back then their were no roster limits and scholarship limits were higher. We are maxed out at both. Kicker has to come from within.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The whole scholarship argument

Oct 16, 2017, 12:56 PM

I by no means dismiss the sticking points caused by the scholarship limits, but I think EVEN SO, it's philosophically shortsighted to give in to that so easily. Quite obviously, not having a reliable FG kicker can lose games, and just a game or two here or there can make the difference in a season.

But it's more than that - think of all the less obvious - almost "hidden" costs to that. Kickoffs, touchbacks, decisions about punting/going/for it/field position/clock management considerations, etc. that emanate from knowing you can't rely on your kicker. I certainly realize that it's dang-near axiomatic that you can't make PKs such a scholarship priority that you hurt your overall team, so it has to be a balance it, of course.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure they can find a walk on that is better than 39%,,if

Yes, that was many moons ago, but Coach Ford asked me if I had ever kicked an American Football and I said "Does the goat not also dine on caviar if placed in front of him?" He said "I don't know what that means but let's go talk to Coach Ibrahim."

The rest is history.

The commentators said what happened on one of the kicks. His plant foot was too close to the ball, and he pulled it. Maybe he can just work on mechanics.

Simple solution: go for it or pooch punt with QB pin deep

That's probably our best option right now until we find a solution. Maybe skalaski will try and kick. Heck let's let Wilkins try haha.

Oct 16, 2017, 12:24 PM

Heugel missed 2 FG and an extra point in 3 games this year too. I haven't gone back to the film to look closely. Just asking???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Snaps haven't been perfect, but Will Swinney has done well.

Oct 16, 2017, 1:05 PM

Huegel was never automatic, but made some really great clutch kicks last year for us. And even though he was struggling, his misses usually were pretty good looking kicks.

Spence just has some major problems that I just can't see getting better. His kicks have gotten worse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Snaps haven't been perfect, but Will Swinney has done well.

Oct 16, 2017, 1:50 PM

If Will Swinney is placing the ball an inch or two from where the kicker is expecting it to be?

Re: FB Update: Swinney says placekicking spot is open

Oct 16, 2017, 1:50 PM

I think it is a case of nerves and more mental than anything else. I'm sure they have examined the whole snap hold kick operation to see if it is clean. I know from experience that anything that throws off the timing will likely end in a miss. If the holder's hand gets in the way it will likely cause the ball to fly wide right with a lot of spin. I think the open date and maybe a chance to work with his kicking coach(maybe Dan Orner in Charlotte?) might help him make the adjustment if it's mechanical or mental. Best thing that could happen is he keeps the job and hits his kicks against GT and gains confidence. I'm pulling for him!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: Swinney says placekicking spot is open

Oct 16, 2017, 8:03 PM

Losing Huegel for the year was very unexpected, but hopefully they can get things straightened out over the break...Its not like Spence was in high pressure situations ie no last second attempts, so Im guessing he just needs some good reps to build chemistry/improve mechanics with the holder and the rest of the special teams unit...maybe they can find a good way to simulate game situation reps...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: Swinney says placekicking spot is open

Oct 16, 2017, 2:07 PM

OPEN Kicking tryouts have been held in the past several times. Early 80's where yes both Donald Igge and Obed made the team and went onto successful NFL careers.
In 86 and 87, open tryouts were held for punter. I know since I was one who tried out and made it to last cut. Bill Speirs (dad of current punter Will Speirs) won the job then left Clemson for a very successful baseball career.
I knew kicking would cost us a game and it is just more than the miss kicks.

Re: FB Update: Swinney says placekicking spot is open

Oct 16, 2017, 2:51 PM

Last year my son had a friend who tried out and he hit multiple 50yd field goals. The kid felt really good about his chances. Coaches came back and said not enough separation to allow a walk on. My son could not believe it because he watched him kick multiple times.

I guess he'll play whoever seems to be best able to kick. Appears options are limited. Kickers can be game changers when the O is struggling, as we found out last game.

2024 orange level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Kickers are strange birds.

Oct 16, 2017, 4:28 PM

They can become head cases very easily, and they can also find a trigger to self correct and go on an amazing streak.

Respect or lack of

Oct 16, 2017, 8:24 PM

New inconsistent snapper and new holder did not do Greg any favors early on and contributed to his early misses. Spence is a red shirt Jr that got a scholarship right out of high school. Not sure what coaches saw back then but he was beat out by a walk-on and apparently never had much talent or can’t handle the pressure. This is what happens when you don’t treat every position with respect. It eventually comes back to bite you. Next man up. Go Groomes.
