Hmmm

Nov 4, 2016, 9:04 AM

That's what everyone outside the Clemson fanbase thought last year too prior to the national championship game. A lot of minds were changed after that game.

"Gamecocks aren’t ready to take college football by storm just yet. They’re not even ready to compete in their own state – Clemson will still own the territory. Gamecocks fans would be smart to keep their heads buried until that time. Avoid talking trash to a much better Clemson program.” -Dustin Tackett

Iowa? Is this dude high?

Nov 4, 2016, 9:06 AM

That is an absolutely awful comparison. Iowa and Clemson could not be more different in style of play, types of athletes recruited, and scheduled opponents.

No offense to Iowa but they aren't in our league right now. We can actually beat Alabama, and you could even argue should have beat them and were the better team last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you read the rest of the quote?

Nov 4, 2016, 9:23 AM

He's not comparing play style or the athletes on the team. Read more than two words next time. I bolded the important part for you.

"I think it is kind of like Iowa last year," Hancock said about Clemson. "They just kept winning. Obviously, they get the committee's attention when you play a schedule that has teams in a grouping with you. Clemson won eight games. Clemson is the only team in our ranking that has beaten two of the teams in our top 10 with Auburn and Louisville."

Last year's Iowa team went 11-1 in the regular season despite not always being favored, surprising many of the pundits and voters. Their schedule last year was actually pretty tough with Wisconsin, a better-than-usual Northwestern team and Nebraska on the road. Even their loss to Sparty in the Big Ten championship was a close game.

THAT is the comparison he's making. That they won despite a tough schedule against similarly talented teams with a handful of close games in there. Gee, that sounds kind of familiar.

When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

That don't make no cents

Nov 4, 2016, 9:25 AM

Both statements can't be true. The big gap and us playing the toughest schedule.

Seems like ESecPN is getting to the committee to me.

It suggest conflict of thought.

That's a nice way to say, 'He said something then proved what he said was wrong usings data which we commoners call facts.'

Hahah. Did you read it? Terrible comparison.

Nov 4, 2016, 9:34 AM [ in reply to Did you read the rest of the quote? ]

"I think it is kind of like Iowa last year."

No, we are not. Iowa scraped by because they had to. The conference championship and bowl game exposed them.

We have a decisively more difficult schedule than they do and continue to play well below our potential...yet still win. Anybody who watched Iowa football last year knows that they had to play error-free football each and every game just to have a chance. What they did without having highly-recruited talent was somewhat remarkable. Clemson is not in this position.

We have the talent to continually overcome mental errors and fundamental breakdowns against elite competition. Only a few teams in the country are capable of overcoming the mistakes we have made. Obviously, we are one of them.

We are more like 2013 Auburn or 2014 FSU. Talent to beat anybody on any given day but if we don't play fundamental football all the way through the last quarter of the national championship we may get sent home empty handed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Many thought Iowa was an "imposter" last year ...

Nov 4, 2016, 9:36 AM [ in reply to Did you read the rest of the quote? ]

... a team that kept winning but eventually their weaknesses caught up with them.

I think THIS is what the writer is saying about Clemson 2016.

I think it's BS, but that's what he's implying.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I love people who fail miserably at trying to be a smart ###

Nov 4, 2016, 9:47 AM

Thank you helping to more clearly summarize the argument.

Again, Iowa and Clemson is a poor comparison on almost all points.

Ok. How about FSU in 2014?

Won their games but looked not dominant doing so.

Feel better?

Nov 4, 2016, 11:30 AM [ in reply to Iowa? Is this dude high? ]

value is the ability to hard sell to America, without flinching, highly flawed processes such as the old BCS and now the New Year's Eve semifinal games. He has the singular ability to defend a tough stance with a rigid and unyielding message - right up until the process changes, with his defense changing accordingly to fit - much like many of today's political commentators.

Nov 4, 2016, 2:36 PM [ in reply to Iowa? Is this dude high? ]

This is such a insult I don't even know if I can trust this committee after this comparison. Well Tiger fans if the committee truly feels this way its 13-0 or bust if we want a playoff spot...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Iowa? Is this dude high?

Nov 4, 2016, 6:36 PM

Disagree, he may have compared us to Iowa, but I think it's being taken out of context. I think we have money in the bank, with our schedule, plus our resume over the last 2-3 years. I think it's possible for us to lose one and still get in, as long as it's not the ACCCG.

With that said, I do not think we lose, I think Syracuse poses the greatest threat of beating Clemson, but I do not see that happening.

Yeah he's definitely wrong about Iowa - that's a poor

Nov 4, 2016, 9:36 AM

comparison. The only similarity is that both teams won some close games.

2015 Iowa - Terrible schedule. Benefited tremendously from an incredibly weak Big Ten West division and also dodged all of the good teams from the East. Iowa played just one team in the regular season that was ranked in the final CFP top 25, #13 Northwestern. Despite the easy schedule Iowa still had a lot of pretty close scrapes. They beat Pitt by 3, Wisconsin by 4, Illinois by 9, Indiana by 8, Minnesota by 5, and Nebraska by 8. Iowa also had a very clear ceiling. They were getting as much as possible out of a team that didn't have the same level of talent as most playoff caliber teams. You always had a sense with Iowa last year that they just weren't capable of competing in the playoff even if they did happen to make it.

2016 Clemson - Strong schedule. Currently the only team to have beaten two teams currently ranked in the top 10 of the CFP rankings. One of just two teams (along with Michigan) to have beaten 3 top 25 teams. 2 of those 3 wins came on the road (all of Michigan's have been at home). Troy has also turned out to be one of the best group of five teams so far this year. And the Tigers haven't even hit their ceiling yet. This is a team capable of playing with anyone in the country when firing on all cylinders. The engine has sputtered at times, but if that gets fixed everyone better look out.

Our consolation is that as long as we skate through...

Nov 4, 2016, 9:55 AM

the remainder of our schedule with the higher score in each game the committee's opinion won't matter. I do not believe the playoff committee will be keeping the official score card. I do not believe they will be on Bama's offensive line or carrying the ball for Bama.

I sure hope they award us the championship after we outscore Alabama. I'd hate if they considered Bama the better team if we add one more bit of data to our resume, a win over the top ranked team, and they still erroneously believe that Bama is the better team. Don't you hate when something like that happens?

I mean, we beat Louisville and ESPiN didn't quit talking about how much better they were until the CFP rankings came out.

Re: FB Update: CFB Director: "significant gap between Alabama" and other teams

Nov 4, 2016, 10:58 AM

Would absolutely love to see Alabama lose to LSU, but I don't think it's going to happen. LSU offense is weak. Can't see them losing to Auburn at home. Michigan not nearly good enough on offense. A&M already has proven their inadequacy to the task. Washington? No way. Ohio State? Their offense has sagged in recent weeks. I honestly think Clemson is the only team that can beat them. The Tigers are strong in all three phases, just like 'Bama. And CU has the experience and coaching. This is not a prediction, but I honestly believe Clemson has the best chance to stem the Tide.

Clemson has the best chance because of Watson he can make the throws. IF we play Bama stay fast get a good lead and cruise to a win

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: CFB Director: "significant gap between Alabama" and other teams

Nov 4, 2016, 2:37 PM

I disagree with get the lead and cruise. I say we take the lead from the start and keep an all out assault on them on both sides of the ball until the last second ticks off the Clock. If we do that, I believe we beat Bama down in the 4th quarter, but we can't afford to let up for even a minute through the entire game. We should still be on them at half time planning a fatal knock out blow at the end of the 4th quarter. Saban showed he will sucker punch us if we drop our guard for a spit second and pound us into the ground. He promises his team he will sucker punch us and has them practicing how he intends on sucker punching us. Never slack off of our full frontal and rear assault for a second. That will I do believe equal a National Championship win over the county's mighty Alabama Saban team!!!

This guy-the CFB Director- has his degree in journalism

Nov 4, 2016, 10:40 PM

No offense to journalism majors but my point is that his resume hardly screams of someone who is an expert to declare AL the 2nd Coming. He's held administrative positions. He's never strapped on a helmet. He's never coached a team or been involved up close with football other than an Assistant Sports Information Director, a position for which his journalism background would have given him the skills for the job. As a Microbiology major, I'm not qualified to hold a "National" high profile position as CFB director either and issue comments in the form of a perceived expert. Discussing opinions on forums is one thing. Making a comment on a national level that is predjudicial against everyone but Lord Saban is just not right.

Read his background for yourself

The idiot sits there and gives all the reasons why Clemson should be #1. He slobbers over his self while complementing Alabama says there is a big gap between one and two then states that Clemson is the only team to beat two of the top ten teams in their group. The only big gap is that empty space between his ears! Clemson is #1 Go Tigers!

Re: FB Update: CFB Director: "significant gap between Alabama" and other teams

Nov 5, 2016, 1:59 PM

Can someone show me an analysis of Alabama’s accomplishments this season?  Every article I’ve read starts with “Alabama is #1”, followed by a justification for every other team’s accomplishments…  NO ONE offers any analysis of the 2016 Alabama team's body of work.

Here’s my analysis:

Alabama beat one top 25 team, Texas A&M, at home.  They also beat seven other unranked teams (USC, Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kent State, Ole Miss) by a combined score of 318 – 105 (= avg. margin of victory of 30.4).  Four of their eight wins were at home, three on the road, and one at a neutral site (Arlington, TX vs USC).  They have won three conference games on the road.

Clemson beat three top 25 teams, Louisville at home, and FSU and Auburn on the road.  We also beat five other unranked teams (Troy, SC State, NC State, GT, BC) by a combined score of 195 – 58 (= avg. margin of victory of 27.4).  Four wins at home and four wins on the road. We have won three conference games on the road.

And the big surprise of Aggies at #4?  Impressive wins against Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas?  Come on man!  This was just a ploy to elevate Alabama's win over them.

And don’t even try to argue with me.  I know I’m right!
