Dennis Dodd -- Clemson 27, Alabama 20: Clemson is playing too well and there is too much upheaval at Alabama at the moment. Look, it takes a lot to even pick against Bama, but the planets are aligning. Dabo already knows the Alabama gameplan, having faced it last year. For the second consecutive year, he has the best player on the field (Deshaun Watson). Nick Saban is asking an analyst -- albeit with head coaching experience -- to call plays in the national championship for the first time 11 years and for the first time at all in 15 months. As weird as Lane Kiffin might have been, Steve Sarkisian left the game because of substance abuse issues. Now, he inherits a quarterback in a winner take all game who -- despite Jalen Hurts' success -- has been learning how to play QB in the context of chasing a championship. Even Saban can't overcome all that. You know what looks like stability right now? I hate to say this but ... Kiffin.

Still think he's off though on this. Plain and simple, it's blind guessing. There's not enough film one way or another to even know what Clemson will look like on offense. We all know Hunter Renfrow is on the team still...Deon Cain is on the team still. But do we know which QB will take the field and how they will look? Nope. So to say they won't contend when you don't know what they will look like...well, it's honestly absurd, coming from the same people who seem to think Fl State every year can "reload" and be fine. We return the majority of our defense....now, just have to wait to see what the offense does look like, which he knows no more than we do.

but I'm just trying to illustrate that at least he got fairly accurate last year.
With all the departures, how can any rational person get worked up when some (actually most) sports writers are going to indicate a "down" year for Clemson. He did double down on it by saying we won't compete for the the title. But, it's his job to talk, write, prognosticate, about sports.
I guess if he phrased it like, "The only way Clemson competes for the ACC again is a little luck and if their young talent steps up in a big way", maybe people wouldn't be so mad.
But, when you say that, it's covering both sides and people complain about that too.
Oh well, if we didn't b##ch about something, TNet would not have any traffic.... LOL.

He's correct. We're losing a whole lot on offense but the defense will be enough to keep us in games. I think with where our offense will be next season winning the ACC and getting to a great bowl game should be our goal and hopefully we overachieve.
Everyone wants to say "Alabama starts every season with a new QB" but they run a pro-style system where they run it 65% of the time. They just need a QB who won't screw things up. Our offense moves through the QB. That being said, I hope with Cooper, Johnson, and Bryant we can at least find someone who can pick up the pieces, but oh how I would love to beat FSU and go on to win the ACC 3 straight seasons.

Never seen this guy before.
He may very well be right about challenging FSU for the ACCC depending on our qb play, but with our defense I don't see us losing more than 2 ACC games max. My worst case prediction would be 10-2 with the 2 losses coming from Auburn and FSU.
I don't see any reason why we can't challenge FSU again for the ACC. We get them at home, and if we can pull off the win, we'll be in the driver's seat with a game to give vs the rest of the ACC.

I rarely say anything negative but that was flat out an uneducated, not doing you homework piece of trash reporting! Our defense alone will most likely get us in the playoffs or dang close! We'll start slow on Offense. (IMHO) Despite that, I think about halfway through the season our inexperienced guys will be figuring it out and we're going to be a tough team to beat. Of course I'm a little biased but our Tigers are not anywhere close to a complete rebuild!
I used to let these talking heads make me doubt our chances. Now I realize we truly don't get the same respect that the SEC or teams that have the reputation from past glory years. I am going to enjoy watching them choke on their own words this upcoming season! #GoTigers #allin

who it would be. This is the same guy, I do believe, that two or three years ago ranked his top 39 preseason teams and Clemson was nowhere to be found. Apparently every time we have a change at QB, he thinks we won't have much. Does he not pay attention to recruiting?! We don't rebuild at this point...we are well built. Just have to restock the cupboard, which we do as good a job of as anyone in the country. Go Tigers!

for it. I don't see us being worse than the 3rd best teams in the conference.
It is not a rebuild. Our defense will likely be even better with few subtractions. WR's will be replaced with elite talent and have the potential to be even better. RB is a question and shallow but could improve with a faster talented Feaster. QB is the main question. IMO Bryant can get us to the playoffs if he can keep turnovers low. We would run a system more similar to what Louisville did last year. I don't know what to expect from Cooper and Johnson but if they beat Bryant we likely have a pretty good QB. Again, this isn't even close to a complete rebuild.
Honestly kicker is the second most concerning position for me.

I'm hearing a lot of positive talk about Kelly being the starter. Does Kelly have the ability to stay in the pocket and make deep threats down the middle like Watson did during his first game against Georgia? If not, then many teams are going to make us pass the ball by stopping the run. I remember losing to GT because Watson was injured his true freshman year and Cole Stoudt threw two pick sixes and couldn't get a first down. I don't think we redshirt anyone. If we can't get it done against Auburn in the first half. Put in the next guy.

Clearly Dennis doesn't know the Clemson football program. We've been re-loading in all positions for years under Swinney. This year, even though Watson was the best School history- there is one , maybe two coming up that are going to make us cheer again at QB, too much WR talent, RB talent to not have a balanced 10 win season while the QB situation is worked out. We're much more re-loaded on offense than we've ever been- as I can re-call. Swinney knew these moments would come, so He's built a program that will win. Loaded with 5 star talent, and some of the best coaching in the nation on both sides of the ball..
Dennis, get to know the Clemson program before you judge it. Ohio State get's the benefit of the doubt, Alabama get's the nod. Clemson is defending National Champions, not just by one player, but as a team, that is , well.. re-loaded. It's a program, not a one hit wonder. So Now Clemson Football get's the nod Dennis, Now Clemson does.
