Fact or fiction..reported DJ got $1,000,000 worth of NIL deals in ‘20.

Jan 24, 2022, 2:18 PM

Could that be true?

Saying, at 19 years old and $1,000,000 in the bank this ole boy wouldn’t be spending too much quality time worrying about spending 100% of my time learning about football plays, being around teammates that might be jealous or unfriendly, cracking the books, etc..but instead I would be securing the best dream ride I could find in RED (wait, Orange) and a tall Redhead. ??

NOTE: I am Not implying that DJ would do any of the immature things that I would do!!!

What say you about the reported haul amount and what you’d be doing & buying.

If accurate, I hope he saved enough to pay his income taxes. Not sure what the tax rate is on 1 million, it has never applied to me, but I bet it is high.........

Jan 24, 2022, 2:36 PM

Half..if it comes in one lump payment, but I bet a bunch of it would be contingent on performance and even then they probably structured it to get doled out over a long period of time. Perhaps 10 years. So he'd be looking at $100K per year. If he had a such a deal.

What I wonder is why any company would think a college player, whose appeal is probably isolated to their specific college fans, would be worth a million dollars. I mean would Nike sell $10 million dollars of product to fans of Clemson as a result of his endorsement? Even if DJ was performing as we all hoped he has very limited advertising appeal.

None of it really makes sense to me. We have pro players that can hardly sell endorsements to a single used car dealership or are hawking ads for check cashing businesses.

Man I’m with you. People spending this kind of money on a high school kid that has never played a snap of college football makes no sense.

Why do people assume an NIL deal, especially one with a major company, would have on field performance related metrics for payment? I’ve never seen any speculation like that for national endorsements done by pro players

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

lol. no way it is based off performance

Jan 24, 2022, 3:52 PM [ in reply to Re: So, fact or fiction..reported DJ got $1,000,000 worth of NIL deals ]

if they dont see a ROI they simply will just stop providing NIL.

Re: lol. no way it is based off performance

Jan 24, 2022, 5:21 PM

Not if they are a workaround to basically legally pay recruits/players.

Instead of Johnny 5 Star getting a McDonalds bag of cash from a booster, they would just provide an NLE deal.

Nobody’s asking for the McDonalds bag cash back if the player underperforms.

The NLE deals probably have language that allows the payer to discontinue the sponsorship, should they choose to.

I'm kinda sure I read some where that tax on lottery is 25 to 36% Gov, depending on amount, and 7% state tax.

What's really crazy, is that tax on Jeopardy winners is more than half!!!:(

That is because the state of California taxes it as income before anyone else taxes it, including the contestant's state of residence/

DJU's NIL deal is probably more like 1,000,000 Yen than $1,000,000.

If true I wonder how he will feel if those same companies fire him and hire Cade for the same deals. I can see this being another issue with the nil down the road.

Endorsements really make no sense to me. Are you really going to buy a Subway sandwich just because Trevor Lawrence appears in an ad for them? For me that is not likely.

Now if a world renowned chef (with integrity) tells me that a restaurant is awesome I might go.

Actually for a guy of my age there is hardly a sports star endorsement that would mean anything to me. I don't buy sports products any more and I really don't give a crap what pizza or car they like. My neighbor would be a more important and valid endorsement to me for most products and services.

It’s really hard to pay much attention to the sub when you are watching his hair getting blown around by a fan. Some commercials would be a hard no and me looking like that on national tv would not be considered. Other commercials I could do and he don’t need the money anyways. Hate that commercial.

You've got to think most of these celebrity endorsement deals are a waste of money since most people don't care what they think. And the opinion of a random 18 year old kid that 99% of the general population has never heard of makes even less sense. This is more about people getting paid to attend a certain school than it is any company really caring if its investment makes any sense.

100K for Dr Pepper. Nowhere near that for Bojangles. Plus whatever the piddly ones he picked up for car dealerships in the area. So maybe 200K total. Nowhere near 1,000,000 bucks. Still nice pay for a college sophomore who was really only famous for being Clemson's QB.

Exactly. No way Bojangles paid all that much to the ACC players that were endorsing them including Sam Howell. Bo's more a smaller regional brand than DR P.

If I had a 1,000,000 deal as a freshman in College, best believe, I'm trying to figure out how to get a 2 million or 3 million deal before I graduate.

Money wouldn't have changed me one bit. As an athlete, I was driven by performance, getting faster, breaking records and winning races.

If anything, the $$$ wouldn't have thrown more gas on the fire. I would have reinvested much of that into better food, more chiropractic and massage and more shoes to help stay healthy and recover faster.

Ha, if was given $1 million at 19 I would not be alive today. My best friend got $90,000 in insurance settlement when he turned 18, this was 1991 money. ($200K today maybe) A year later he was in jail and every penny gone

If Tony Elliot made 2 mill for last season

I have no problem with DJU making 1 mill.

The focus should be on paying the defensive staff as much as possible, imo, though.

Don't believe he got anywhere near that because Dr. Pepper pulled their contract when he underperformed. It was written into the contract. Not so with Bojangles.
