Explosions in the news at several different manufacturing

plants in the US this morning. Having worked with hazardous chemicals for over 35 years in my career as a Chemical Engineer, these reports always hit close to home for me. And, it doesn't have to be classed as a hazardous chemical to do major damage. One of the explosions was at a chocolate factory. Without any information to go on, I would almost bet that one was a dust explosion. A dust cloud of just about anything CAN explode, if given a spark. Flour is a good example. There are various people who go around the country doing demonstrations of exploding flour inside a glass tube, to show the need for cleanliness in the chemical packaging environment. It WILL blow up good, it will blow up REAL good, to quote an old SNL skit.
I pray for all who work in industry, where there are constant dangers that may not even be evident. May they all go home each night safely, having provided for their family for another day. As the news too vividly shows, it doesn't always happen that way. Amen.

Such tragedies will be quickly politicized.
"Explosions are the results of rollbacks by the Trump administration of industrial safety measures..."

Dust explosions also happen more this time of year when the air is dry, but I guess Trump did that as well!

Amen to that 76er. I worked in food processing plants my entire career. People who haven’t worked in a manufacturing environment have no idea of the hazards in the places. All I wanted to do was have everyone go home in the same shape they showed up for work in. In the last 40 years the equipment has been made much safer mostly through engineering design. I have seen too many industrial accidents ranging from minor to life threatening. Many, but not all, of them were the result of the employee not following proper procedures and taking shortcuts. Either way, having to make the phone call to the wife of a friend and coworker to tell her that her husband has been injured was always a very bad day. Had one fatality at one of my plants, but it was not work related. The guy had an aneurysm and died while at work. Work related or not, there is no doubt that was the worst work day of my career.

If they don't keep those bag houses (dust) clean, its aa accident waiting to happen.

You may well be correct about a dust explosion

After looking at the video that captured the explosion, my guess is that it was a boiler explosion but we will see
Those places have giant natural gas boilers and if those things aren’t maintained or operated properly it can result in a catastrophic explosion.

Grain bins can explode, even before you make flour.

A dense enough concentration of any type of dust can explode.

Many people became very wealthy after their loved ones died in that one.

Talking about flour? I used a 5lb tannerite explosive with a 5lb bag of flour on top. Shot the tannerite at night, the explosion blasts the flour but then it ignites and creates one of the most beautiful mushroom clouds and ball of fire you will ever see. So I know a flour dust cloud is very combustible.
Is this how you learned? Or were you less scientific than I was? 🤭
