It's 1st and 10. Defense jumps offsides making it 1st and 5. Before the offense can snap the ball, the defense jumps offsides again. First down, right? Well, the referees call for a measurement. They gave the first down but still, they have to measure?

Would have been kind of funny if the measurement had come up short.

He pulled when he Kept Calling for measurements late vs GT. Late in the 4tb quarter, Tigers gonna run Out The Clock and win, and he stopped it. 1st stoppage we were about 2 yards short. 2nd stoppage we were still clearly short. We ended up losing on a GT Touchdown pass to Calvin Johnson over Justin Miller in the End zone with only a few seconds left in the Game.

Happened to my high school team 50 years ago. After checking the chains after 2nd penalty walk off the ball was 6 inchs short. Son of a gun ref held up 2 fingers, 2nd down. The whole team just shook our heads except for my buddy at center who was mumbling vulgarities at the dumbo ref. We had him again that season and he was just as incompetent the 2nd game as I remember. Fun story though. Can’t believe it happened again.

Hopefully that means they got some new blood in cause last I heard they were sorely lacking bodies.

I have to admit that I was on the sidelines for a long time and didn’t always understand/agree with the officials. Some were extremely helpful and would talk with me during the game and explain what was going on. Others refused to acknowledge my presence and would throw a flag if I was out of the coaching box one foot. The thing that drives me crazy on all levels of football is when one official makes a controversial call and they huddle up to “sort things out”! This stops the flow of the game and often has an impact on the outcome of the game. That being said, you couldn’t pay me enough to do their job! The quality of HS officials has dropped drastically because young people are not wanting to do this job. This now falls to older officials who stay in the game too long and under qualified officials that are hired because there is no one else available.

You are spot on with "young people not wanting to do it." I stepped away 15 years ago and I am not sure we had anyone under 45 in our district.

Perhaps they were using the chains to place the ball? I dont know... just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here.
