Expansion

I have been thinking about what the next move should be for college football in general, I feel like we are on the brink of our beloved sport being ruined for money. I pretty much only see one true option.
I think there is going to end up being 3 super conferences (if we are to avoid the 2 mega conference situation that we all fear) and I genuinely think the best move….. is for the Big 12 to expand aggressively.
They would have to target Oregon, Utah, Washington & Stanford right now before they make other moves. Then the next move would be to target Clemson, FSU & Miami.
But the biggest move that would make this the most viable option for a competing conference is to some how also snag Notre Dame. If the Big 12 could manage that I could see it working out. It would have to end up being a 20-22 team conference, you could have divisions based on geographic location & just do a round robin to the other divisions each year.
I have not heard any rumors about this but when I think about it, it really is the only move that makes sense for college football. Sadly a lot of programs would be left out to dry

You would think so as they have had a standing offer to do that for years but they think their cleats don't stink and they need special treatment.

That’s a dumb take because ND has consistently turned away the B1G & even if they did join they would be a run of the mill team where if they joined the Big 12 or even ACC, they would be at the top or at least second. You only say that because of their geographical location but that doesn’t have any relevance anymore

There will not be 3 mega conferences. There will be 2. The only question is how many teams in each. I am hoping 24 in each. I fear 16 in each.

You say that but that leaves a lot of good programs out because the SEC & B1G are already at 16 teams each. So what? Does that now mean that the 2 mega conferences have been established & everyone else is left out to dry? No. Absolutely not. There will be push back whether you see it or not. And realistically right now the Big 12 is in the best position to do that. The PAC-12, Big 12 & ACC are in a position where moves need to be made.

The $$$ define it. The SEC and Big 10 will have payouts approaching $100 Million. The ACC will be paying out less than $40 Million per school. We will not be able to compete on such an unlevel playing field. All other conferences will be also-rans. The Big 10 and the SEC may form their own championship and exclude others.

That is absolutely ridiculous until every major program is in one of the two conferences that will never happen. The Big 12, PAC 12 & ACC will try to combat it somehow. Probably by joining each other to some degree or another

Ultimately ending up like the NFL: two "leagues" divided into somewhat geographic divisions. Then you'll have a playoff similar to the pros with the two "league" champions squaring off in the "College Super Bowl". The remaining college sports will stay in their respective conferences.

Oregon and Washington made application to Big 12 last night. The great shuffle is underway. For those left behind, ACC primarily, groveling will be the new normal.
