and Denver could still make the playoff field even with a loss to KC on Sunday (e.g., they would need the Bengals and the Dolphins to both lose as well).

Interestingly, KC is planning to sit Patrick Mahomes for Sunday's game against Denver.

They could always announce him and state that he'll finish the season with the Broncos before joining Clemson's staff

I would agree. He is a position coach, not the DC or HC. I am sure Clemson would be fine with letting him fulfill his obligation for the next couple of weeks.
