Serious question -
How many of you lived in the Tin Cans at Clemson? Are you even old enough to know what I'm talking about?
Do the terms New-A or New-F mean anything to you?
I got to thinking about that today as it was about 39 years ago today that I started at Clemson and moved into E-section.

each I think. Seems you got phones about the time of AC.
without AC you'd run a window fan and the find it had thrown chopped up bug parts on the desk and floor while you were away if you went out w the room lights on.
we literally had roaches who ate the paint off posters on the wall

Johnstone is where I learned cockroaches can fly. I stalked a 4-incher one night, shoe in hand. It was high on the wall and I was waiting for that sucker to come down a bit. All of a sudden, it took to flight and buzzed my head. Talk about SHOCK!

I applied for Johnstone with all three of my choices when I was an incoming freshman. That must have worried housing because I never got Johnstone all four of my short years there. Lower quad, Lever, Clemson House and shoe boxes lol.

Yup. Freshman year - E5. Sophomore and Junior Years - C. Talk about a time warp. I arrived in Clemson my freshman year sight unseen. There weren't college-visit trips back then. When I moved into E, the first thing I saw was a gun rack in my shelves. The second thing I saw was the asbestos fire retardant sprayed on the ceiling. The third thing I saw was metal walls. And, finally, the thing that sealed the deal was the view of Death Valley and the foothills (of course, all of this was viewed between the smoke stacks). Then, I knew, I had made the wise choice of coming to Clemson. And, I have been thankful everyday since. Go Tigers!!!!

Remember how you could hear your neighbors' phone all the way down the hall? And, if someone kept ringing, all you had to do was kick the wall outside his door to knock the phone off the hook? Yeah, pretty sophomoric, but, at the same time, Johnstone wasn't built for creature comforts.

Still had the gunracks then too. Window faced the valley, and if you could see around the smokestacks, the view was not bad. TV reception was terrible - had to put the antenna out the window and the wind constantly blew it over. If ANYONE in the building was playing music, you were hearing it - regardless. Plus the overhead storage cubby's back wall was missing, which means you could climb through to the room next door. My neighbors and I had an interesting war going on all semester. Climb in and turn the radio volume to full, short sheet the bed, etc.

Live on A-6 for three semesters; F-Annex for 5 semesters

I used to love our football games in the hallway of A-6. Nothing like checking someone into the wall and hearing the phone pop off the hook on the other side of the wall.
BTW, if you ever got skin caught in the wall cracks during a body check, you never forget the pain.

I've seen photos of the original construction. Many don't realize that they initially had a band of windows (rather than the single window per room when I arrived - C.1971) across the exterior wall. Must have been like a greenhouse!!!

before AC and with pay phones on each hall. Most of my first two years, the athletes lived in the tin cans with us, which helped a lot of us to get to know them better. I lucked out and lived on the top floor each year and earned additional extra $$$ as a hall monitor, then supervisor. As to the lack of AC, most of us just put up with it, as a lot of us didn't have it in our homes or schools prior to Clemson. I can't remember the letter designations, although my senior year I lived in the one facing the Ft. Hill mansion adjacent to the student affairs' offices...and my favorite hangout was the canteen on the bottom level.

E-6...D-4...and finally C-501!
Aug 10, 2012, 11:22 AM
|
|
C-501 was the first room up the stair . . .off the breezeway leading to the quad! Great room!
Christmas, 1972, I came back after a weekend home and found that my roommate had removed all of the ornaments from my miniature Christmas tree and shoved the hooks into the asbestos insulation that covered the ceilings! Asbestos fluff covered everything.
I specifically remember Spring '72, when I roomed in D-4 as I suffered a particularly bad bout of SPRING FEVER . . . staring out towards the Shoe Boxes, where the girls were attempting to get a head start on the summer tans.
Freshmen year (fall of '71) moved into E-616 (I think), which faced towards the Valley. Great view, but horrible for afternoon sun, though we were AC'ed by then. This only benefited you if the P-Plant had switched the system over to cooling rather than heating. Stupid two-pipe system!
Fond memories, though . . .

have a hot plate(you younger guys can Google that). I was in New F where the view consisted of lattice work - (best memory was a guy starting a fire on the ledge with lots of newspaper after the occupants were asleep and bungeeing their door so they thought they were trapped in an inferno). Also lived in D facing the physical plant (so cold one morning I scraped frost off the metal wall). Last year was on the bottom floor of C on the quadrangle side near the corner where it joined D.

So I took it back wanting to "trade" it up for a breeze-box type, which was about $10 or $15, which, of course, we didn't have. He let me swap anyway with the promise that I'd pay him the balance over the next three months...which I did but which was tough to do anyway! Regardless, the bigger fan helped, and a lot of guys would come loiter in our room just to enjoy the fan. Hilarious when I think of it now...most folks I knew were broke all the time.

life" of only a few years, and even Bob Edwards repeatedly indicated his dislike of them. Their longevity, of course, was due to the money involved to replace them. I hated to see them go but knew their time had been way up for years. Their construction was unique as each floor was built, then "jacked" up with the next level then raised. Thus, the top floors were the first completed and so on.

The Kudzu Party on the hall, Ray Workman as RA and his "killer parties", Sun bathing on the ledge, the luckiest kick by a UGA kicker in forever, a Duke NC in basketball, the towel party in the showers, the Challenger space shuttle disaster, rating girls from above, lots of new friends (GDI)
and . . . a cheap case of Natural Light in the fridge purchased at the PLEZ-U.
Those were the days! LOL!

There was a guy across the hall from me, I think he was in D517 or D519 that fell off the ledge in his chair. Broke his wrist, but he didn't know it until later. That happened during gameday, but was in 1982 I think. His name was Dewitt if I remember correctly.

I was a Freshman in 1968 and lived in room B-901. No A/C,filthy tile floor, one phone for the entire floor, and I loved every day of it. '68 was the last mandatory RAT class, and I was very proud to be in that class. Shaved head cost us $.50, and we had to buy our RAT hats from Judge Keller's. To Dan's to pick up orders from upper classmen everyday. It really saddens me that some dope smoking hippies saw to it that the RAT system was discontinued, because all of us RATS had to help one another. I still maintain friendships I made because I was a RAT.

I remember them telling us that Johnstone was "temporary housing" back in the day. That's why it was built on a slab instead of having a real foundation.
That was in 1997-1998...
Still had some good times in that old can, I remember a couple of times when it would rain very hard water would pour in through our window since it was right at ground level with a brick wall/ water trough on the outside.
I was still sad when they tore it down for some strange reason.

I was in C 7 in a corner room. We had holes in the wall where the bolts had fallen out. We hung army blankets to keep the west wind drafts from freezing us. Also, we had one pay phone to a floor which was across the hall from our room. We would answer the phone "Joe's pool hall you stack'em we'll rack'em" or "Bull street sanitarium Napoleon speaking" and others not repeatable in polite company.

Lived in F222 the first two years and moved to New F237 my last two years. I was on the 2nd floor of F all four years. I loved being on campus, near the cafeteria, near classes, near Fike, near the stadium, near the collesiu, and near downtown. It seemed to be the center of the universe.
I wish all Clemson students could/would spend 4 years on campus.

E-343, freshman year. New A for a summer school.
Remembering Johnstone fondly is some odd mental trick most of us play. Living in Johnstone was less pleasant that recalling living there.
1. First day of Johnstone, outdoor temp was 104. Indoor temp was in the high 80s. 2. No phone, no food, no pets. Lots and lots and lots of cigarettes. 3. 8 bare toilets in a row, against a tile wall. Who liked taking a crap next to the fellow from the other end of the hall? Half way through the year they put in partitions between the toilets, but no doors. 4. Room inspection. 5. Rat season. Dan's Duty. 6. For Homecoming girls were allowed on the hall after the game. Doors to the rooms MUST be open. Pretty goofy hiding behind an open umbrella with your girl, blocking prying eyes passing by in the hallway. 7. I liked that guy's music from 10 rooms down the hall. Really I did. 8. Amazing what lighter fluid shot under a room door ignited looks like. 9. Peeing in the sink. Yes, I did. 10. Lousy beds.
Yep, I loved it.
