Snakes in the UpState

I control about 2 acres in the UpState backed to a lake. I don't have a lawn, my yard is more natural, some might mistakenly say "snakey".
I have snakes (as do we all), seldom see one. I know they are about and doing their thing. Most tend to be nocturnal.
I have copperheads and rattle snakes, as do we all.
Don't put your hand or foot in an area you can't see, and all will be fine.

25 years back when I moved here to this lake, Water Moccasins were on my mind. I grew up near Wateree where they are numerous. They are nasty critters.
They don't occur above the 'Fall Line". Not sure I would rule out one crossing it, but have never seen one here. The "Fall Line" is an interesting thing to read as to.

Lake Hartwell has numerousHUGE water snakes which are not poisonous. Most snakes seen around the lake will be those, but all snakes are decent swimmers.
Being bitten by a "non" poisonous snake will hurt like #### and ruin your week. All snakes (and most critters) bite.

learned about snakes early on. Have seen many copperheads but never a rattlesnake even though was only 3 miles from Kings Mountain Park where they are common. Did see one cottonmouth in York County along a creek bank- opened it’s mouth in a threatening manner and I realized how they got the name.

there was definitely one back in the early’60s. I know snakes- the only other one I saw was at a pond near Hemingway - huge bullfrog came out of the bushes , jumped in the water with one right behind him, surfaced for a second, and was jerked under. The snake then pulled it ashore and I decided to give him plenty of space!

Dude you sound like a true redneck and that’s not a bad thing.

Your post reminds of the time that me and my family used to live in a mobile home and it was a hot bed for snakes. Our house was right next to a big grassy field where snakes loved to rome. I guess the snakes loved to sneak into our house because we found a bunch of them in our home. One was even found in my moms bed. I believe it was a big snake too. There was also a baby snake outside my bedroom door once. I came out and all I see is a baby snake hissing at me. My mom actually had to kill it with a shovel cause she didn’t know if it was poisonous or not. She literally stabbed the snake in half.

The snake problem got so bad that my mom had to get on to the landlord about it. Apparently the reason why snakes were getting into the house was because there were little holes in some of the floorboards where snakes can use to get in. I even think some of those snake were poisonous too. So it was getting to the point where it was dangerous just living in our home. Thankfully he did eventually fix the floorboards and from then on we didn’t have anymore snakes in our home.

Thanks dude. I think we can be friends too. I think people who lean left or right can still be friends with each other. I honestly don’t care if people on here are democrats or republicans. If you are nice and respectful to me then I will be the same to you.

I even used to have a friend who was a muslim. You wouldn’t think we would be friends either. Because im a queer person and hes a religious person who thinks being gay is a sin. But we made it work. I never tried to force my beliefs on him and he never tried to force his beliefs on me either. We respected each other. We did grow apart though but that was just because he lived in another country and we just lost contact with each other.

Now on to the “coot” situation. I am a diehard Clemson fan. I hate the coots. Now I unfortunately can’t say I was ever a student at Clemson because I never went to college but my dad was a grad student there. He was the one that got me into Clemson sports back when I was 8 years old. (That’s what my username means btw, I was 8 in 2008.) Since then I’ve become a diehard Clemson fan.

There is one person on here though who thinks I am a “coot”. You want to know why??? Because I made a post on here about a month ago talking about how the ACC was doing bad in the softball tournament and how I wished that our conference had done bettor in this year’s tournament. He said that only “coots” cheered for other teams. When I tried to explain that he was wrong, he just said something along the lines of “Oh you’re denying it. That just confirms you’re a coot. The more you deny the more your feathers are showing.” I only made 1 or 2 comments denying that I was a coot btw but he still refuses to believe me.

He now every once in awhile comments on some of my posts always calling me a “coot”. It’s gotten to the point that every time he does that I just have to let out a chuckle. It amazes me how delusional he is.

Here is the post that I was talking about btw… one other person thought I was a coot too and took it personally that I was talking about the acc when our softball team just won the night before. Even though in my post I said that I was happy and proud that our softball squad was still alive in tournament at that time. I don’t know why a couple of people thought I was a coot just because I wanted the acc to do bettor.

Yea this place is chaotic. I don’t really have a problem with 2k but his comment on my post definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

It genuinely seemed like he hated me and that he thought I was a bad person just because I gave my opinion on the acc. I was just giving my opinion on the state of our softball conference and he took that opinion and made it out like I was disrespecting our softball club. Even though it was clear I wasn’t doing that. In fact I actually stated that I was proud of our team. It really seemed like he was trying to villainize me and obviously I didn’t appreciate that.

But I’ve seen him around tnet and I truly don’t think he’s a bad person just because of one unflattering comment. He’s even liked some of my post and I believe I’ve like some of his post too. I think he’s made some great posts on here. I still respect him.

I’m kinda new here. So I’m not sure who BBO is but I do think people should stop using the word “coot” so loosely. You shouldn’t be calling people coots just because they like the acc. There are a LOT of Clemson fans that cheer for the acc but that doesn’t mean that half of our fans are undercover coots. That’s just a ridiculous notion.

I live near a pretty wooded area, and I've seen rat snakes, Indigos, Garters, and who knows whatever. I can usually shoo them out of the yard, because I don't particularly want one, somehow getting in my hose. I'm sure there are rattlers somewhere out in the woods, but thankfully, I haven't seen one yet. I've had one copperhead back there, and unfortunately; he met with the wrong end of my hoe. I don't try to harm snakes if I can help it, but I have grand kids, and pets in my backyard too. If they get bit by a non venomous snake, it may be a trip to the ER, for some antibiotics, and bandages. Getting bit by one of the bad boys usually means a hospital stay.

I recently had to move to Florida for work. Talk about alot of snakes! Like many of the people that have replied I am not afraid of snakes and never kill them just because they are there or I am afraid of being bit. Since being here for 2 years I know that I have at least a dozen black snakes living in my 1/3 acre fully mowed and landscaped yard. I see them daily. Even though my pool is screened I have had a pigmy rattle snake in my pool skimmer one day...it was not at all happy to be there. there is a black snake that live in the enclosuse full time, but he does not hurt anything so I let him/her stay. In the sping it is not uncommon to see them warming on my front side walk either.

My note about snakes is don't leave bags of potting soil, peatmoss, or unused mulch sitting open (even in your garage or shed. They love to get in these to nest or winter. Black snakes don't present a problem, but rattle snakes like these spots also. They also love to get underneath scraps of plywood left lying on the ground. Water mocassins and rattle snakes in particular. Pick this stuff up...when you do, lift it so the edge of the plywood touching the ground is at your feet. I had a guy in my church get bit by a water moccasin when he was cleaning up his yard and lifted at 24" wide piece of plywood up the opposite way and got nailed. Another guy here in the community got bit when one had gotten up on top of his door and it fell on him and bit him when he went outside.

Just sayin' SC has nothing on the population of snakes here. Fortunately the pythons have yet to get this far north, but they are getting closer every year.

the copperhead, cottonmouth (also known as water moccasin), eastern diamondback rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake (also known as canebrake rattlesnake), pygmy rattlesnake, and eastern coral snake.

In my experience, copperheads and the cottonmouth's are the most common. The others tend to be somewhat reclusive. I've only encountered rattlesnakes on a few occasions and in each case I was hiking Jones Gap, Raven Gap, Panther Run on the backside of Table Rock near Pinnacle Mountain, or various places along the Foothills Trail.

They all have one thing in common besides being venomous. In each and every case, they will leave you alone provided you don't mess with them or accidently step on them.

Be safe out there.

Those cottonmouths will actually challenge you. Understand it’s the worst bite of all. The copperheads are the ones most people get bitten by because they are small( a three footer is a huge one) and they don’t warn you with rattles. Have to wear snake boots around the low country if you are going to be outdoors and in the woods. The camouflage on them is so good

I could swear I saw a Cottonmouth up at Burrells Ford (Mountain Rest) several years ago. It was May and I walked down to the edge of the river and this dark snake with a flat head and blunt tail actually started chasing me. When he would open his mounth it was white...as cotton! He was about 2.5ft. His tail would twitch when he was still.

It wasn't a water snake. I know them very well from around the dikes on Keowee, as well as in the Chattooga.

It reminded me of what my father used to call a "Pilot" snake from the area back before the lakes took over the rivers.
